Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates and Automated Virtual Machine Provisioning

Oracle VM template is a fully pre-installed, pre-configured virtual machine that can be downloaded onto an installed Oracle VM server. An Oracle VM Template may include a single virtual machine, with a single Oracle product such as a single-instance database or WebLogic Server or multiple VMs with multiple Oracle products to facilitate rapid deployment of even the most complex composite applications: this is the foundation of the Application-Driven Virtualization.

Use of Oracle VM Templates eliminates the installation and configuration costs, and reduces the ongoing maintenance costs helping organizations achieve faster time to market and lower cost of operations.

Oracle VM Templates can be downloaded from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud: Just download, import and deploy the Template VM(s) and within minutes you will have a fully installed and configured Oracle environment that you know is completely correct, supported and certified by Oracle. In most cases, deployment times for complex applications can be reduced from weeks to hours.

And this is not all…..

On Oracle VM you can create your own templates, based or not on Oracle Products; so, for example, starting from an existing Oracle VM Template you have the opportunity to build your gold image where you can address all your standards and/or desired changes.

At the same time, you can create a totally new Oracle VM template and evaluate which kind of customization is needed on the first boot of the VM.

This option allows to build an entire fully automated Cloud solution, based on Oracle VM, able to deploy VMs and services in minutes, instead of hours or days.

All these activities can be accomplished easily with this white paper, totally dedicated to the Automated Virtual Machine Provisioning for Oracle VM where concepts like:

  • Oracle VM Messaging System
  • Oracle VM Guest Additions (ovmd and ovm-template-config)
  • Oracle VM CLI
  • Local and remote configuration of a VM

are explained and proved with more examples on different Oracle Linux releases (5/6/7).

If you have any question, feel free to post them on this blog entry.

Have a great weekend.

Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 are Now Available

Happy Friday everyone!

Congratulations to the Oracle E-Business Suite team for bringing us another update to the Oracle VM Templates family. The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite facilitate rapid deployment of ready-to-run Oracle E-Business Suite that can be used for demonstration, development and/or production. As with all other Oracle VM Templates for Oracle’s applications, the Oracle VM Templates for E-Business Suite come fully pre-configured with Oracle Linux as the guest OS along with all the required technology components.

You can deploy these templates on any industry-standard x86-based hardware certified for Oracle VM and Oracle Linux (listed here).

An Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 installation requires two templates, one for the database and one for the primary application tier.   You can choose from two database templates, depending on whether you will deploy a Vision demonstration system or an empty production instance.  In addition to the database template and the primary application tier template, you can optionally deploy a "sparse middle tier" template to add secondary application tiers.

Visit Steve Chan’s blog for more information on the new Oracle E-Business Suite Templates.

Opening The Oracle VM Templates Blackbox

Oracle VM Templates give you the efficiency of speed and the assurance of no guess work. For those in the know, Oracle VM Guest Additions is a great way to empower you to do more interesting things with the Templates. Today’s blog article is to share the secrets with those who are not content with just treating Oracle VM Templates as a black box.

Oracle VM Guest Additions is a set of packages that can be installed on the guest operating system of a virtual machine running in the Oracle VM environment. These packages provide the tools to allow bi-directional communication directly between the Oracle VM Manager and the operating system running within the virtual machine. OK here’s where the ‘power-user’ part comes in…. This gives your fine-grained control over the configuration and behavior of components running within the virtual machine directly from Oracle VM Manager. You now have the ability to see and direct what goes on inside your VM from Oracle VM Manager.

  • Get a reporting on IP addressing
  • Use the template configuration facility to automatically configure virtual machines as they are first started
  • Send messages directly to a virtual machine to trigger programmed events
  • Query a virtual machine to obtain information pertaining to previous messages

Enough of the theory!

To get hands-on how-to’s and talk directly with the product expert on Oracle VM Guest Additions, Robbie de Meyer, or Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database and RAC Template expert Saar Maoz, join us for the Oct 24th live webcast. You can also read more about the Oracle VM Guest Additions in the whitepaper.

Oracle VM networking under the hood and 3 new templates

We have a few cool things to tell you about:

First up: have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes in the network when you Live Migrate your Oracle VM server workload? Or how Oracle VM implements the network infrastructure you configure through your point & click action in the GUI? Really….how do they do this? For an in-depth view of the Oracle VM for x86 Networking model, Look ‘Under the Hood’ at Networking in Oracle VM Server for x86 with our best practices engineer in a blog post on OTN Garage.

Next, making things simple in Oracle VM is what we strive every day to deliver to our user community. With that, we are pleased to bring you updates on three new Oracle Application templates:

ANNOUNCEMENT: Oracle VM 3 Templates Available for Sun Ray Software 5.3

Following up from our announcement of Oracle VM 3 templates for Oracle Secure Global Desktop last month, today, we are proud to announce the general availability of Oracle VM 3 templates for Sun Ray Software version 5.3.

With Oracle VM 3 templates, anyone using Oracle VM 3 need not download, install and configure the supported operating system and the Oracle product(s) individually. In this case, the supported operating system (Oracle Linux 5.7), and Sun Ray Software 5.3 product is packaged together into a template that one can easily import and clone from as a virtual machine in Oracle VM 3. This results in a nearly instant deployment and configuration of Sun Ray Software within Oracle VM 3.

Login into the Oracle VM section at Oracle Software Delivery Cloud  (click on 'Cloud Portal (Main)' at the top-right) and, Under Oracle VM templates - x86 64-bit, look for
  • Oracle VM 3 Template (OVF) for Sun Ray Software Media Pack for x86_64 (64 bit) (64 bit)
    • Oracle VM 3 template for Sun Ray Software 5.3 with Oracle Linux 5.7 (64-bit)

Once you download the above template, you must

  1. First import the assembly (ova) file that you downloaded from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud
  2. Next, create a virtual machine template from the assembly
  3. And finally create a virtual machine from the template

Once the virtual machine is created and starts up, make sure you enter the networking parameters (hostname, IP address, netmask, gateway etc), and optional user parameters correctly. You must also enter a root password during first boot. And that's it - the Sun Ray Software installation script will automatically pick up the networking parameters, prompt for confirmation and complete a default installation.

Once the installation is complete, you may may then begin to use a supported Sun Ray hardware client or Oracle Virtual Desktop Client software to connect to the Sun Ray server and use the default Oracle Linux desktop. You may also want to refer to the Sun Ray Software Administration Guide to learn more about Sun Ray Software and its capabilities.
