Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates and Automated Virtual Machine Provisioning

Oracle VM template is a fully pre-installed, pre-configured virtual machine that can be downloaded onto an installed Oracle VM server. An Oracle VM Template may include a single virtual machine, with a single Oracle product such as a single-instance database or WebLogic Server or multiple VMs with multiple Oracle products to facilitate rapid deployment of even the most complex composite applications: this is the foundation of the Application-Driven Virtualization.

Use of Oracle VM Templates eliminates the installation and configuration costs, and reduces the ongoing maintenance costs helping organizations achieve faster time to market and lower cost of operations.

Oracle VM Templates can be downloaded from Oracle Software Delivery Cloud: Just download, import and deploy the Template VM(s) and within minutes you will have a fully installed and configured Oracle environment that you know is completely correct, supported and certified by Oracle. In most cases, deployment times for complex applications can be reduced from weeks to hours.

And this is not all…..

On Oracle VM you can create your own templates, based or not on Oracle Products; so, for example, starting from an existing Oracle VM Template you have the opportunity to build your gold image where you can address all your standards and/or desired changes.

At the same time, you can create a totally new Oracle VM template and evaluate which kind of customization is needed on the first boot of the VM.

This option allows to build an entire fully automated Cloud solution, based on Oracle VM, able to deploy VMs and services in minutes, instead of hours or days.

All these activities can be accomplished easily with this white paper, totally dedicated to the Automated Virtual Machine Provisioning for Oracle VM where concepts like:

  • Oracle VM Messaging System
  • Oracle VM Guest Additions (ovmd and ovm-template-config)
  • Oracle VM CLI
  • Local and remote configuration of a VM

are explained and proved with more examples on different Oracle Linux releases (5/6/7).

Have a great weekend.

Accelerate Application Deployment with Oracle VM Templates

Oracle OpenWorld 2015 is around the corner, and we are pleased to announce the release of the latest and greatest Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database as well as an updated version of deploycluster tool that supports Oracle VM 3.3.

Oracle VM application driven architecture is designed to enable rapid application deployment. With the use of Oracle VM Templates, sophisticated applications such as Oracle Database or Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) can be deployed in minutes — up to 10x faster than with other solutions.

The release delivers all security fixes from database and OS in a fully automated deployment framework. The deploycluster tool provides fully automated end-to-end Single Instance and Oracle Real Application Clusters deployments on Oracle VM 3. The new deploycluster tool now supports the latest Oracle VM 3.3. The new templates include Standard Edition 2, which is totally new, first time the templates ever did for standard edition. For download instructions of deploycluster tool and Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database, visit here.

Rapid Application Deployment

Here is a sample deploycluster session, notice this is invoked using a single command, which does everything, powers on VMs, setup network then hands over to the OneCommand engine inside the VMs, which builds a single instance or RAC environment complete with a database.

Oracle OpenWorld 2015 will start in on October 25th. As every year, among the 2000+ sessions presented there will be many Hands on labs.

The idea of these Oracle VM HOL is to enable 40 to 50 customers and partners to meet in a room and install/configure/use Oracle products on laptops during 1 or 2 hours, following detailed documentation and being helped by several Oracle experts. Each student will have a laptop where, thanks to Oracle VM VirtualBox, we will be able to create Oracle VM Demo environments:

The labs that we are going to host this year are the following:

Deploying and Managing a Private Cloud on Oracle VM [HOL10469]

In this session, highly experienced Oracle experts walk you through the planning and deployment of a database as a service (DBaaS) private cloud environment with Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c and Oracle VM as the foundation. See how to deploy new Oracle databases or schemas from a catalog in different ways in minutes.

Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 are Now Available

    Happy Friday everyone!

Congratulations to the Oracle E-Business Suite team for bringing us another update to the Oracle VM Templates family. The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite facilitate rapid deployment of ready-to-run Oracle E-Business Suite that can be used for demonstration, development and/or production. As with all other Oracle VM Templates for Oracle’s applications, the Oracle VM Templates for E-Business Suite come fully pre-configured with Oracle Linux as the guest OS along with all the required technology components.

You can deploy these templates on any industry-standard x86-based hardware certified for Oracle VM and Oracle Linux (listed here).

An Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 installation requires two templates, one for the database and one for the primary application tier.   You can choose from two database templates, depending on whether you will deploy a Vision demonstration system or an empty production instance.  In addition to the database template and the primary application tier template, you can optionally deploy a "sparse middle tier" template to add secondary application tiers.

Visit Steve Chan’s blog for more information on the new Oracle E-Business Suite Templates.

Opening The Oracle VM Templates Blackbox

Oracle VM Templates give you the efficiency of speed and the assurance of no guess work. For those in the know, Oracle VM Guest Additions is a great way to empower you to do more interesting things with the Templates. Today’s blog article is to share the secrets with those who are not content with just treating Oracle VM Templates as a black box.

Oracle VM Guest Additions is a set of packages that can be installed on the guest operating system of a virtual machine running in the Oracle VM environment. These packages provide the tools to allow bi-directional communication directly between the Oracle VM Manager and the operating system running within the virtual machine. OK here’s where the ‘power-user’ part comes in…. This gives your fine-grained control over the configuration and behavior of components running within the virtual machine directly from Oracle VM Manager. You now have the ability to see and direct what goes on inside your VM from Oracle VM Manager.

    • Get a reporting on IP addressing
    • Use the template configuration facility to automatically configure virtual machines as they are first started
    • Send messages directly to a virtual machine to trigger programmed events
    • Query a virtual machine to obtain information pertaining to previous messages

    Enough of the theory!

To get hands-on how-to’s and talk directly with the product expert on Oracle VM Guest Additions, Robbie de Meyer, or Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Database and RAC Template expert Saar Maoz, join us for the Oct 24th live webcast. You can also read more about the Oracle VM Guest Additions in the whitepaper.
