Happy SysAdmin day and happy Friday!

Open Universities Australia (OUA) director of ICT, Anthony Russo, was faced with a 3 year cycle of systems upgrade. With tightening budgets to meet growth targets, needing to deliver on cost efficiencies while staying within constraints of existing license footprints and implementing a zero outage operations model, Anthony had to re-evaluate his traditional IT approach with bare metal computing.
Virtualizing Oracle Database and Oracle PeopleSoft Campus applications were a remote option for Anthony due to fear of loss in performance and managing the complexity of the environment with a small IT staff. The environments that would be affected were the hosted development, and cloud based environments for both Production and Disaster Recovery.
However, the looming hardware refresh and software upgrade costs of over $300,000 convinced Anthony to evaluate Virtualization.
Oracle VM claims as the best virtualization technology for Oracle Database and enterprise applications workload were not sufficient data to decide on this important refresh. Anthony embarked on a performance testing validation exercise. To his surprise, his own performance results debunked the performance myths about virtualizing database workloads -- in fact in some cases virtualized workloads on Oracle VM performed better than even on bare metal!
As for the fear of complexity introduced to his IT process by virtualization, this was also debunked with Oracle VM Templates and Oracle Enterprise Manger 12c. His IT team provisioned a multi-node Oracle RAC environment all within a few hours using the Oracle VM Templates with pre-configured Oracle Database, RAC and Oracle Linux. With Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c, the team is able to manage and monitor Oracle VM servers and virtual machines across multiple locations from a single console.
shares his report findings in a whitepaper “ Oracle VM on Oracle Real
Application Clusters, Physical vs. Virtual Database” hosted by the Independent Oracle
User Group. Here is a sample of some of the key findings in the report:
We have a few cool things to tell you about:
First up: have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes in the network when you Live Migrate your Oracle VM server workload? Or how Oracle VM implements the network infrastructure you configure through your point & click action in the GUI? Really….how do they do this? For an in-depth view of the Oracle VM for x86 Networking model, Look ‘Under the Hood’ at Networking in Oracle VM Server for x86 with our best practices engineer in a blog post on OTN Garage.
Next, making things simple in Oracle VM is what we strive every day to deliver to our user community. With that, we are pleased to bring you updates on three new Oracle Application templates:
E-Business Suite 12.1.3 for Oracle Exalogic
Oracle VM templates for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3 (x86 64-bit for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud) contain all the required elements to create an Oracle E-Business Suite R12 demonstration system on an Exalogic server. You can use these templates to quickly build an EBS 12.1.3 demonstration environment, bypassing the operating system and the software install (via the EBS Rapid Install). For further details, please review the announcement.
JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 and JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 22.214.171.124 for x86 servers and Oracle Exalogic
The Oracle VM Templates for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne provide a method to rapidly install JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.1 and Tools 126.96.36.199. The complete stack includes Oracle Database 11g R2 and Oracle WebLogic Server 10.3.5 running on Oracle Linux 5. The templates can be installed to Oracle VM Server for x86 release 3.x and to the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud.
PeopleSoft PeopleTools 188.8.131.52 for Oracle Exalogic
This virtual deployment package delivers a "quick start" of PeopleSoft Middle-tier template on Oracle Linux for Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud.
Oracle VM template is a fully pre-installed, pre-configured virtual machine that can be downloaded onto an installed Oracle VM server. An Oracle VM Template may include a single virtual machine, with a single Oracle product such as a single-instance database or WebLogic Server or multiple VMs with multiple Oracle products to facilitate rapid deployment of even the most complex composite applications such as E-Business Suite, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, PeopleSoft HCM, or Siebel CRM.
Oracle VM Manager 2.2 template is intended to be installed on a new Oracle VM 2.2 server; If you have a new Oracle VM 2.1.5 server and want to deploy Oracle VM Manager template, you can use the Oracle VM 2.1.5 Manager template. With the Oracle VM Manager template, you can quickly set up the Oracle VM Manager to manage the Oracle VM server environment.
The Oracle VM Server SDK Template provides an environment for third party drivers to be built for the Oracle VM server 2.2 or 2.1.5. This environment is being provided because the Oracle VM dom0 (management domain) only contains a minimum set of packages, and it does not provide the additional development packages needed for building modules.
Oracle VM Templates are downloaded from Oracle's E-Delivery website: Just download and copy the software images onto your server that has Oracle VM installed on it, import and deploy the Template VM(s) and, after answering some one-time queries relating to the customer's desired environment (DHCP or static IP, passwords, etc.) within minutes you will have a fully installed and configured Oracle environment that you know is completely correct without having to install products from scratch. In most cases, deployment times for complex applications can be reduced from weeks to hours.

You may notice today that Oracle VM template for Oracle PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 and PeopleTools 8.50.02 is ready for download from Oracle's E-Delivery web site. You can review the Installation Guide before downloading the template; or you can refer to My Oracle Support note 950875.1.
This virtual deployment package delivers a "quick start" of PeopleSoft HCM with Oracle Database on Oracle Enterprise Linux. Oracle VM template for Oracle PeopleSoft HCM 9.1 and PeopleTools 8.50.02 includes the following components.
