Announcing General Availability of Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux

Today we announce the general availability of Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux 1.0. With this announcement we are now providing production OpenStack support to Oracle Linux and Oracle VM customers. The support for OpenStack is available as part of the Oracle Linux and Oracle VM Premier Support at no additional cost.

In December 2013 Oracle joined the OpenStack foundation, In May, during the OpenStack conference in Atlanta, we have released the technology preview version which was based on the Havana release. Since then we have refreshed the tech preview to support Icehouse and continued improving it by making install process simpler and fixing bugs. The GA release, which is available today, is based on the latest Icehouse release.

Our goal is to help make OpenStack an enterprise grade solution, capable of operating an entire datacenter including all types of workloads meeting all the requirements including reliability, security and performance. We would like OpenStack to become first class solution and the cloud operating system of choice for customers of any size. One of the ways Oracle can help make this a reality is to test and enable demanding enterprise workloads to run on OpenStack. Making sure that those workloads can run on OpenStack in a reliable and supported way is an important step in making OpenStack an enterprise grade, general purpose cloud management solution. With experience in deploying and managing enterprise workloads in virtual environment we are in a good position to drive such enabling activity forward, and that is what we plan to do.

Some resources and pointers to learn more about Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux:

  • Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux (aka O3L) is available for download from the Oracle Linux public yum repository at http://public-yum.oracle.com
  • The Oracle Technical Network (OTN) page for O3L is located here and includes documentation, links and also a virtualbox VM which has O3L fully installed, configured and ready to use on your own laptop
  • More information can also be found at http://www.oracle.com/goto/openstack including data sheet, an interview with Wim Coekaerts and more

Next week is Oracle OpenWorld, at OpenWorld we will showcase Oracle OpenStack for Oracle Linux 1.0 and also have sessions and hands on lab to discuss OpenStack, you are welcome to join us. Here are links to our sessions about OpenStack:

Technology Preview of OpenStack Icehouse with Oracle Linux and Oracle VM - Now Available

On May we announced the technology preview of the OpenStack Havana release with Oracle Linux and Oracle VM, today we are releasing the technology preview of the Icehouse release. This release is a fast and easy way to deploy OpenStack giving customers an excellent starting point to deploy Icehouse and test it in their environment. We made sure that the deployment process remains the same as it was for Havana using few simple steps so anyone ,even with no prior experience with OpenStack, can install and try it out. The Icehouse release is an important step in the process of making OpenStack a first class enterprise solution, it continues the strong maturity curve of OpenStack and introduces more plug-ins , more bug fixes and around 350 new features.

Oracle Distribution of OpenStack for Linux will become part of Oracle Linux and Oracle VM premier support subscriptions at no additional cost. Like Oracle Linux and Oracle VM customers can use it for free or, shall they choose to, purchase support from Oracle and receive a complete production support for their deployment. As we stated previously, Oracle will support deployment of Oracle Linux and Oracle VM with any distribution of OpenStack the customer chooses and we will continue working with third party vendors to assure that we can integrate with their solution.

Please join us at Oracle OpenWorld on September 28th where we will have a special focus on OpenStack. At Oracle OpenWorld customers will have a chance to hear more about Oracle’s OpenStack strategy and products as well as see live demos and try them in the hands on labs.

Some technical details about the Icehouse tech preview release:

The download instructions are available here and the getting started guide is available here, for convenience we outline the few additional steps needed to complete the deployment

When deploying an Icehouse compute node with Oracle VM users have to perform two additional steps as part of their post-install steps. The two additional steps include setting the following parameters:

openstack-config --set /etc/nova/nova.conf libvirt cpu_mode none
openstack-config --set /etc/nova/nova.conf libvirt virt_type xen

When deploying an Icehouse compute node with Oracle Linux the two additional steps include setting the following parameters:

openstack-config --set /etc/nova/nova.conf libvirt virt_type kvm
openstack-config --set /etc/nova/nova.conf libvirt cpu_mode none

In both cases the operation needs to completed by restarting the nova-compute service:

service openstack-nova-compute restart

Mirantis Announces Support for Oracle Linux and Oracle VM

In May we announced the tech preview of the Oracle’s Distribution for OpenStack for Oracle Linux and Oracle VM. As we have been doing for many years with Linux and Xen, we plan to work with the OpenStack community and help make OpenStack an enterprise grade alternative for cloud deployments.

We are very pleased with the Mirantis announcement today stating that Mirantis will offer Oracle Linux and Oracle VM as part of their supported operating systems and hypervisors options. Right from the beginning we stated that our approach to OpenStack will be open and collaborative (see Wim Coekaerts’ blog). We said we’ll work with the rest of industry and support our customers with any choices they make with regards to OpenStack distribution and today, with this announcement from Mirantis, we take another step in this direction.

With this announcement our joint customers can choose Oracle Linux as their operating system and Oracle VM Server as their hypervisor of choice and build an OpenStack deployment with end to end support. Customers can now use the most advanced capabilities in Oracle Linux like Ksplice and Dtrace and achieve better scale and performance with Oracle VM Server as well as receive 24/7 support directly from Oracle. Using an enterprise grade hypervisor and Linux distribution such as Oracle Linux and Oracle VM brings OpenStack deployment to a new level of reliability.  a higher level of reliability allows users to transition more workloads onto OpenStack confidently, knowing that each part of the stack is well supported.

On top of that Oracle Linux is fully supported as a guest operating system on the Mirantis distribution of OpenStack. Oracle Linux is free to use and redistribute including patches and updates with the option to purchase support subscription from Oracle. We believe that choosing Oracle Linux as guest operating system is the best and most cost efficient option and we would like every customer to have the option to use it.

Oracle will continue to collaborate with other OpenStack solution providers to allow them to offer Oracle Linux and Oracle VM as part of their solution. Our goal remains the same: jointly deliver great solutions and support experience for our mutual customers. We also look forward to working with other vendors to certify networking, storage, hypervisor and other plugins into the Oracle OpenStack Distribution.

We believe in keeping OpenStack open and collaborative and we will continue to focusing on:

  1. Working with other cloud solution to make sure they can integrate with Oracle Linux and Oracle VM
  2. Working with hardware and software vendors to integrate their solution with Oracle Distribution of OpenStack for Oracle Linux and Oracle VM
  3. Assuring that Oracle Linux is supported as guest operating system on any virtualization platform
We look forward to continue working with our partners and customers helping to make OpenStack a first class solution for the enterprise.
