Live Webcast, Dec. 6: Enterprise Clouds with Oracle VM

Mark your calendar! On Tuesday, Dec. 6th at 9am PT, we are hosting a live webcast with Oracle VM experts.

Enterprise Clouds with Oracle VM

Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 9 AM US PT

The ability to create a cloud leveraging public or private infrastructure has been hampered by the lack of availability of practical, cost-effective choices for server virtualization. In this session, you will learn how Oracle provides a single virtualization solution for your entire infrastructure, and how Oracle Enterprise Manager and Oracle Virtual Assembly Builder help you manage Oracle Applications across the cloud. Also find out how virtualization was leveraged to transform IT for Oracle University and support more than 350,00 students in more than 40,000 classes each year. Those lessons have paved the path to private cloud computing inside Oracle.

Speakers:
Adam Hawley, Senior Director of Product Management, Oracle
Dan Herrup, Principal Systems Engineer, Oracle Corporate Citizenship

Public Sector Customers Benefit from Desktop Virtualization

Organizations in the public sector (including national and local government, justice and public safety, defense, education, and more), share similar concerns about security and accessibility of data. Oracle's desktop virtualization solutions can help meet these challenges by providing a desktop management solution that keeps sensitive information off of laptop and desktop computers and maintains it in the datacenter, where it can be more easily protected and managed by IT.

In fact, the entire desktop environment can be hosted in the datacenter and users can access their desktops remotely from Oracle Sun Ray Clients or their existing Windows, Mac, or Linux PCs.

Check out our new webpage that lists a number of assets showing the value of desktop virtualization for public sector customers, including how other public sector customers are benefitting:

  • Gunsan City Hall Cuts Power Consumption by 50%, Reduces Carbon Footprint
  • Colorado State University Powers Eco-Friendly Learning Environment with Oracle’s Sun Servers and Sun Ray Clients

NAB Builds Private Cloud with Oracle VM and Oracle Linux

Check out this recently published article in the CIO Magazine talking about National Australia Bank's (NAB) roadmap to building a private cloud, focused on Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).

NAB has standardized on Oracle VM and Oracle Linux as the enabling technoligies for their IaaS cloud efforts.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

The IT leaders at NAB aren't holding back when it comes to the full-scale deployment of a private Cloud. Ubank, NAB's online-only banking service launched in October 2008, is already the flagship 'tenant' and running almost exclusively on virtualised infrastructure -- from the operating system to Web portal.

UBank is the first 'user' of NAB's new enterprise technology platform, but plans for expansion into the rest of the bank are very ambitious.

From the hardware up, NAB engineered a private Cloud based on Oracle Enterprise Linux and Oracle's (Xen-based) virtualisation platform for infrastructure-as-a-service.

"So in our environment we're basically building up what we refer to as an infrastructure-as-a-service internal private Cloud, based on Oracle virtual grid technology and blade servers underneath that as well," Beer said. "It's a combination of both VMs and physical server deployments [and] operating systems in that environment.

Read the entire 3-part article to see how NAB is deploying their private cloud.

New Reference Configuration: Accelerate Deployment of Virtual Infrastructure

Today, Oracle announced the availability of Oracle VM blade cluster reference configuration based on Sun servers, storage and Oracle VM software. Assembling and integrating software and hardware systems from different vendors can be a huge barrier to deploying virtualized infrastructures as it is often a complicated, time-consuming, risky and expensive process.

Using this tested configuration can help reduce the time to configure and deploy a virtual infrastructure by up to 98% as compared to putting together multi-vendor configurations.

Once ready, the infrastructure can be used to easily deploy enterprise applications in a matter of minutes to hours as opposed to days/weeks, by using Oracle VM Templates.

Very Cool! New Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite

Ivo Dujmovic's blog entry yesterday announced the latest Oracle E-Business Suite Template.

You can use pre-built Oracle VM templates to create a fully operational Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 environment now. 32-bit templates are available and and 64-bit versions will be available soon. We used Production (PROD) database files instead of the Vision Demonstration database to make the database template download smaller -- it is now three files instead of eight.
