News, tips, partners, and perspectives for Oracle’s virtualization offerings

Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1.0 is now available!

Simon Coter
Senior Manager, Oracle Linux and Virtualization Product Management

Latest release provides improved multimedia support, increased Linux integration and new bug reporting helper tool.

To enable organizations and developers to more easily and flexibly create and deploy on premises and cloud applications, we are pleased to announce the general availability of Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1, the latest release of the world’s most popular free and open source, cross-platform virtualization software.

A key tool for developers and users creating cloud and local applications without the overhead of using a full server environment, Oracle VM VirtualBox runs on standard x86 desktop and laptop computers. It allows users to set up multi-platform virtual machine environments for software development, testing, and general purpose operating system (OS) virtualization, with optional runtime encryption. Software engineers can develop for cloud technologies such as Docker and OpenStack from within Oracle VM VirtualBox VMs directly on their Windows, Mac OS, Oracle Linux and other Linux operating systems, and Oracle Solaris machines, making it easier to create multi-tier applications with just a standard laptop. Oracle VM VirtualBox also enables users to create and update virtual machines locally, including the OS and applications, and then package them into an industry standard file format for easy distribution and cloud deployment in conjunction with Oracle VM Server, or other server virtualization solutions. Oracle VM VirtualBox allows users to run nearly any standard x86 OS to run applications that are not available natively on their systems.

With thousands of downloads for each day, Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1 continues to remain the best virtualization solution available for standard desktop and laptop computers and, at the same time, addresses the challenges to enable the use of a wide range of virtual machine environments and operating system with emulation of latest technologies available, improved performance and increased integration.

The 5.1 release supports the latest guest or host operating systems including: Mac OS X Yosemite, Windows 10, Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, other Linux operating systems, and legacy operating systems. New main capabilities in Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1 are:

  • Improved Performance: Significantly improved performance for multi-CPU virtual machines and networking.
  • Bug Reporting Tool: New utility able to collect all the information and logs related to the host and guest operating system, for debug or analysis purposes.
  • Improved Logging Window: New logging functionalities to highlight and filter information related to guest Virtual Machines.
  • Improved multimedia availability: Improved support for different USB devices and multi-channel audio availability.
  • Flash storage emulation: New NVMHCI storage controller emulation available, able to emulate NVME devices - Flash storage - on guest Virtual Machine.
  • Improved Linux integration: Automatic modules deployment in case of a Linux Kernel upgrade and improved systemd integration for the latest releases of popular Linux distributions.

    Hi dear guests,

for your issue related to VirtualBox you have two different options:

    1. with an enterprise subscription for VirtualBox you can open a Service Request to Oracle Support and obtain a resolution to your problem.

    2. you can post your problem on VirtualBox public forum, available at https://forum.virtualbox.org and search for an existing solution or open a thread on your issue.

    Thank you

It is very good work (AMD 64, Windows 10, x64). Thanks.

  • guest Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Your answer above has much to be admired. You want someone to pay for support for something that isn't working to begin with? My! My! I am about to see if I can get this so called Virtual Box working on my Windows 10 64bit of course.

  • Simon Wednesday, July 13, 2016

    Hi "guest",

    maybe my message wasn't clear.

Windows 10 is one of supported platforms for VirtualBox and you have two different options: enterprise subscription or virtualbox.org ticketing system/forum.

No one said that you have to pay.

Hope this one can now do Drag and Drop from Windows(7) Host to Linux(Ubuntu) Guest, which isn't still working. This is my biggest issue with VBox. But nothing like this at changelog :(

one of our targets for 5.1 has been to improve and make rock-solid the drag&drop functionality of VirtualBox.

I would expect that now this is something that correctly works.

Please, remember that it's always suggested to update also guest-additions within the vm while upgrading VirtualBox.

I'm using version 5.0.024, I check updates but it said that im using recent version.

How to install this version? should I uninstall ver 5.0.24 first?

  • Simon Thursday, July 14, 2016

to upgrade to VirtualBox 5.1 you can install the new release of the software.

Automatically it will detect the existing installation and will upgrade it.

  • guest Thursday, July 14, 2016

Why does the check for updates (5.0.24) not detect the new version?

  • Simon Thursday, July 14, 2016

for default VirtualBox checks only on updated maintenance pack on the same major release.

Once a new major release is out we do not want to force the upgrade to it.

  • guest Friday, July 15, 2016

    Thanks Simon.

Maybe the check could detect the new version and just give a notification with a link to the announcement and/or download rather than just click to update. And a remind me again later. or ignore this upgrade option.

    thank you for your feedback.

We will consider this for next VirtualBox release.

Someone not very bright said, "You want someone to pay for support for something that isn't working to begin with? My! My!"

And here again we have a fine example of someone being snotty to people who put much time and talent into creating a great tool which the complainer (and many others) use for free. All because if you want them to stop what they are doing and spend time helping you personally, the authors would ask that you compensate them for their time so that they can pay their bills and eat.

Is there no end to the puerile whining narcissistic hubris? Oh, wait, this is the Internet, of course there isn't.

[Grateful thanks from me to the creators and maintainers of the wonderful tool called Virtual Box]

  • guest-saying-thanks Monday, July 18, 2016

This is to just to say thank you a great product, happily using it. Thank you for having it in both options (so payed support is an option and so is free personal / OSS use).

I'm writing this obvious thank you, out of appreciation and balancing back the tonality in the comments

    > Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.1 is free of charge for personal and evaluation purposes.

    > Commercial licenses for Oracle VM VirtualBox can be found here.

Does this mean that commercial use of VirtualBox is no longer free of charge for commercial use?

  • Simon Tuesday, July 19, 2016

    Hi Eric,

you can find all the details related to the licensing on www.virtualbox.org.

Hi! First of all congratulations on your software, I've been using it for years to try OSes and it is a very good tool for this purpose. However, recently I updated ver. 5.0 to 5.1, when I started a linuxMint VM it prompted me to upgrade the guest additions as well, via "devices settings>insert guest additions iso" which I did, but then I restarted the VM and I noticed that all of the drivers were gone. I did notice that when upgrading it didn't installed any driver, but I thought since they were already there it wasn't neccesary, and I wonder whether there's something else I have to do, or it's just an issue from your product. I solved it by performing a downgrade to guest additions 5.0.16 and it's back to normal.

"one of our targets for 5.1 has been to improve and make rock-solid the drag&drop functionality of VirtualBox."

    Hi Simon,

bad luck, from Linux Guest to Windows Host it works, but again not vice versa.

What can be the reason (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND)? Of course I allowed D&D bidirectional.

Die Drag-und-Drop-Operation vom Host zum Gast ist fehlgeschlagen.

Drag and drop error from host (VERR_PATH_NOT_FOUND).

    Hi "guest" and all,

if you have issues on VirtualBox best place to report them is on our forum, available at https://forum.virtualbox.org and attach all the logs collected on the env.

This is not the best place where debug problems and/or issues.

    Thank you

  • Steve Thursday, July 21, 2016

    Hello Simon,

You are right, that is not the proper place. Unfortunatly, the noting it at others doesn't show an effect. Looking at bugtracker and forum you'll find a dozen of this entry - not even a comment from Oracle. Monthes ago. That makes me sad, especially if it is called rock solid.

Beside this issue - a great product. Hope you can solve it one day.

  • Juan Sunday, July 24, 2016

Thanks for the new release (it works great in my Win10 Pro 64bit pc).

  • kubajar Sunday, July 24, 2016

To users who have problems using Virtualbox in Windows 10 Pro: I use Virtualbox in Windows 10 Pro 64bit every day and it really works. I had to disable Hyper-V first, maybe this command and reboot helps: "bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off" (in elevated command prompt)

  • guest Monday, August 1, 2016

Thanks for another great release, running smoothly as always! (Windows 7 guest on Antergos Linux) I did notice slightly snappier performance on the guest while viewing cad drawings, which is fantastic.

Also, to that one guy (who calls himself a vm addict) complaining that personalised support isn't free for a product that doesn't 'work', uhm, well so are you going to pay for support if the product did 'work'? What is the purpose of 'support' then?
