Oracle VM SVVP Certification

Oracle has been a part of the Microsoft Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP) program and validated previous versions of Oracle VM. The Oracle VM team is committed to continuing our support for users that are running Windows Server guests on Oracle VM Server for x86. With the recent introduction of two new Oracle VM releases, a new test certification has now been completed to validate the following components under the Microsoft SVVP:

Oracle VM 3.4.2 has successfully passed all of the test requirements and is a validated virtualization product to support Windows guests. Certification details are published on the Windows Server Catalog site.

Oracle VM and Windows Server Overview

Oracle VM supports a broad range of the guest operating systems such as Oracle Linux, Oracle Solaris, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Microsoft Windows. For the large base of Oracle VM users that run Windows operating systems, the Oracle VM product delivers ParaVirtual (PV) drivers that provide improved network and disk throughput for the Windows guests. These Oracle VM Windows PV Drivers are certified and signed by Microsoft as part of the Windows Server Catalog software logo program.

Microsoft SVVP Overview

Microsoft launched the Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP) to improve customers' support experiences when running Windows Server operating systems on virtualization technologies. This validation program is open to vendors that deliver machine virtualization products and have customers that run Windows Server-based workloads in their virtualization environment. Customers can benefit from the regular Windows Server technical support provided by Microsoft when running currently supported versions of Windows Server on validated machine virtualization solutions. All testing for this program is done by the virtualization product vendors, with the results of that testing submitted to Microsoft for review and approval.

Oracle VM and Windows PV Driver Overview

Oracle VM Server virtualization software is engineered for open cloud infrastructure. It delivers leading performance, scalability and reliability for enterprise SaaS and PaaS workloads as well as traditional enterprise applications. Oracle VM is easy to download, quick to deploy, and completely free to use. Oracle VM Support offers access to award-winning Oracle support resources and virtualization support specialists, zero-downtime updates using Ksplice, additional management tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, and lifetime support, all at a low cost.

Oracle VM Support offers access to award-winning Oracle support resources and virtualization support specialists, zero-downtime updates using Ksplice, additional management tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, and lifetime support, all at a low cost.

Oracle VM Server virtualization software includes the following components:

  • Oracle VM Manager – is used to manage Oracle VM Servers, virtual machines, and resources. It can be deployed on a physical server or a VM and is comprised of a number of subcomponents including Oracle WebLogic Server and a MySQL database. Oracle VM users can choose between a web browser-based user interface, a web services API and a command line interface (CLI) to manage their virtualization environment. With the Oracle VM Manager, users can run ad-hoc tasks or they can integrate with external tools or scripts for more automation.
  • Oracle VM Server for x86 – is a zero license cost server virtualization and management solution that makes both Oracle and non-Oracle enterprise applications easier to deploy, manage and support. Leveraging the built-in Xen hypervisor, it provides the flexibility to deploy multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single platform.
  • Oracle VM Windows PV Driver – is a component of the Oracle virtualization solution and provides a performance boost for network and disk I/O on Microsoft Windows guests running in a virtual environment on Oracle VM x86 Servers.
  • Oracle VM Server SPARC agent – enables highly efficient, enterprise-class virtualization capabilities for SPARC servers. Leveraging the built-in SPARC hypervisor, it provides the flexibility to deploy multiple Oracle Solaris operating systems simultaneously on a single platform.
