Journey to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure with Oracle VM VirtualBox

Simon Coter
Director of Product Management, Oracle Linux and Virtualization

I'm pleased to announce the new dedicated white paper "Journey to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure with Oracle VM VirtualBox" with all the technical details related to the great feature we've added to Oracle VM VirtualBox 6.0: the capability to export a Virtual Machine and get the same running as an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Emulated Instance.

The white paper briefly describes all the setup steps required on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure related to Storage and Network and, at the same time, instructs on how to configure the OCI Profiles (OCI Accounts) on Oracle VM VirtualBox.

Oracle VM VirtualBox acts as the development tool able also to deploy instances to the Cloud; thanks to this feature and the GUI VirtualBox capabilities you can easily get your local Virtual Machines running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure; all the steps can be also managed by the VirtualBox CLI (VBoxManage) and, so, possibly automated for scheduled deployments.

In the main image you show the "download and test" arrow from OCI to VBA. How can that be achieved? The whitepaper mainly covers VBA to OCI but not the other way around

    Hi Muhannad,

to evaluate and use "Import from OCI" capabilities you should try to use "VirtualBox 6.1" release.
Actually latest one is VirtualBox 6.1 RC1 and it's available at: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/6.1.0_RC1

What are the login credentials of the virtual machine created in the Oracle cloud?

When I provision via terraform / oci, I provide a known public key that is inserted into ~opc/.ssh/authorized_keys... I did not see anything similar when creating from virtual box..

The vm has been created, and I am able to access the ip..

    Hi Neil,

the login credentials of your exported VM (from VirtualBox to OCI) are the same that you had on the VM running in VirtualBox.
Before exporting your virtual-machine you can decide which type of authentication you'll use on OCI (ssh-key or password) and then the same will have to be used on the instance (exported) running on OCI.
