Virtualization at Oracle - Six Part Series

Hi! This is my first post on these Oracle blogs and I hope to gain lots of information as well as contribute where I can.

Our company is one of the first to use Oracle VM Server's to virtualize a JD Enterprise One environment. Our hardware is top notch; a Dell M1000E chassis along with M710HD blades. Suffice to say we have hardware that was designed for virtualization.

We have hired an Oracle Partner to do most of the implementation of the Oracle Vm Servers with JD Enterprise One. Recently we had an issue with one of our M1000E switches where we needed to bring it down momentarily.

I'm a vSphere guy and understand the networking side of things rather well. So when I was figuring out what would happen when our switch would go down, I discovered through the Oracle Vm Manager GUI our network was setup as such:

eth0---> 10.1.3.55 Network Channels: Server Management, Live Migrate,and Cluster Heartbeat.NOTE: this is the management interface which was chosen at the setup of Oracle Vm Server.

eth1---> 10.1.6.67 Network Channels: virtual machine

eth2---> 10.1.8.55 iSCSI to SAN

eth3---> Not in use.

So eth0 and eth1 are the LAN/DATA segments. eth2 and eth3 are for the SAN. Right off the bat you see that eth3 is not even used! Another thing that bothers me is that for eth0 we have a dedicated 10G port just for management!

Here's my question and sorry for building it up this long:

Could we have just configured the Management interface at the beggining of the Oracle VM Server setup to belong to a VLAN group rather than a single interface so we would have something like this?

eth0&eth1--->bonded--->VLAN Group "Management", and VLAN Group "Servers"

In other words all functions would be assigned to those 2 adapters, that way if we lost a single switch we would still be up and running.
