Oracle VM Integrated from Application to Disk

Delivering timely IT services requires integration throughout the stack and not just among servers and operating systems. Oracle VM is integrated at all layers of the technology stack, from applications to disk.

To learn more about how Oracle VM can help you leverage this complete and cost-efficient solution for x86 and SPARC architectures, consider taking the corresponding training course.

You can take these courses from your desk choosing from the selection of live-virtual events on the schedule or travel to an education center for an in-class event. Below is a selection of in-class events for each course.

Bring Oracle VM Environment Up to Date

We incorporate our customer's feedback and bug fixes into the regular updates. It's very beneficial to use the latest update of Oracle VM releases.

Oracle VM 3.2  (Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM Server for x86) is the current stable release, which has with all the advance management capabilities built-in. 3.2.6 is the latest patch update. You can review the list of bug fixes and enhancements here.

For those customers who are running Oracle VM Server for x86 release 2.2, we recommend you to migrate to the latest Oracle VM 3.2. See the resources below to help with the migration:

If the customers have to stay with Oracle VM 2.2 for an extended period of time, please be sure to update Oracle VM server for x86 to the latest 2.2.3, which is the final update of the 2.2 server release. Oracle VM Server for x86 release 2.2.3 is the server only update,  which has integrated cumulative bug fixes since the 2.2.2 server release.

To review the list of bug fixes, please review the announcement email archive at https://oss.oracle.com/pipermail/oraclevm-errata/. To receive notification on the software update delivered to Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN, http://linux.oracle.com) for Oracle VM, you can sign up here http://oss.oracle.com/mailman/listinfo/oraclevm-errata.

Oracle VM support subscription is an integrated part of customer's successes. Customers enjoy the benefit of the industry-leading global support 24x7 for their server virtualization implementation, and receive access to patches, fixes, and updates via ULN and My Oracle Support

Friday Spotlight: Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 are Now Available

Happy Friday everyone!

Congratulations to the Oracle E-Business Suite team for bringing us another update to the Oracle VM Templates family. The Oracle VM Templates for Oracle E-Business Suite facilitate rapid deployment of ready-to-run Oracle E-Business Suite that can be used for demonstration, development and/or production. As with all other Oracle VM Templates for Oracle’s applications, the Oracle VM Templates for E-Business Suite come fully pre-configured with Oracle Linux as the guest OS along with all the required technology components.

You can deploy these templates on any industry-standard x86-based hardware certified for Oracle VM and Oracle Linux (listed here).

An Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.2 installation requires two templates, one for the database and one for the primary application tier.   You can choose from two database templates, depending on whether you will deploy a Vision demonstration system or an empty production instance.  In addition to the database template and the primary application tier template, you can optionally deploy a "sparse middle tier" template to add secondary application tiers.

Visit Steve Chan’s blog for more information on the new Oracle E-Business Suite Templates.

Additional Information:

  • For more information on Oracle VM Manager and Oracle VM Server, refer to the Oracle VM Documentation Library.
  • For information on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2, refer to the Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2 Information Center (Doc ID 1581299.1).

Hands-on Private Cloud Simulator In One Hour

Submitted by: Doan Nguyen, Senior Principal Product Marketing Director

My aeronautics instructor used to say, "you can’t appreciate flying until you take flight." To clarify, this is not about gearing up in a flying squirrel suit and hopping off a cliff (topic for another blog!) but rather about flying an airplane. The idea is to get hands-on with the controls at the cockpit and experience flight before you actually fly a real plane. After the initial 40 hours of flight time, the concept sank in and it really made sense.

This concept is what inspired our technical experts to put together the hands-on lab for a private cloud deployment and management self-service model. Yes, we are comparing the lab to a flight simulator! Let’s look at the parallels:
  • To get trained to fly, starting in the simulator gets you off the ground quicker. There is no need to have a real plane to begin with. In a hands-on lab, there is no need for a real server, with networking and real storage installed. All you need is your laptop
  • The simulator is pre-configured, pre-flight check done. Similarly, in a hands-on lab, Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager are pre-configured and assembled using Oracle VM VirtualBox as the container. Software installations are not needed.
  • After time spent training at the controls, you can really appreciate the practical experience of flying. Along the same lines, the hands-on lab is a guided learning path, without the encumbrances of hardware, software installation, so you can learn about cloud deployment and management.

However, unlike the simulator training, your time investment with the lab is only about an hour and not 40 hours!

This hands-on lab takes you through private cloud deployment and management using Oracle VM and  Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control 12c in an Infrastructure as a service IaaS model. You will first configure the IaaS cloud as the cloud administrator and then deploy guest virtual machines (VMs) as a self-service user. Then you are ready to take flight into the cloud!

Why not step into the cockpit now!

What's New in Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.1 webcast

We have a really exciting webcast coming up for you this week that will tell you all about what's new in Oracle Secure Global Desktop 5.1. Hosted by Andy Hall, you will learn all the exciting features in this brand new release!

What's New in Oracle Secure Global Desktop
Thursday, November 7, 9AM Pacific Time
      Register now.

If you'd like a sneak peek, hop on over to the Fat Bloke Sings, where Fat Bloke goes into detail on some of the new features. My favorite is accessing your applications (or even full desktops) from SGD using just the Chrome web browser. In this graphic, Fat Bloke is running Oracle Linux via SGD and accessing with Chrome on the Mac. This required no installation on the client, no dependencies on any other software, nothing -- just open up Chrome, login, and all of your stuff is there. Very cool.

We hope to see you on Thursday!
