Parakeets continued...

My lone parakeet, Squeaky, is still alive after his (or her?) cagemate, Chirpy died on Friday. Took Squeaky (and Chirpy's body) to the vet on Saturday. Vet could not tell cause of death just by looking at the body and I did not want to spend the extra lab fees to find out. I was a little worried about West Nile, but the vet said that was unlikely since the birds were never let to fly outside and we have not had any mosquitos in the house lately. Also, Parakeets are tougher than Crows and Blue Jays when it comes to West Nile.

Squeaky looked healthy except for some discharge from somewhere on his face (I don't see it and can't recall where vet said it was). The vet suggested I change to a pellet diet since Squeaky was just eating seed mix from PetCo. The seed mix is high in fat and also could contain contaminants. My birds have been living on seed mixes for a year, but I guess maybe that wasn't such a good idea. She also suggested removing a rusted bell from the cage and a few other items to give Squeaky more room. I could also do some lab tests on Squeaky to check for various other things, but again, I didn't want to spend the extra fees. Some of Squeaky's chirps sounds like "Hello, Cheapy, cheapy, cheapy.". He's probably telling me something...
