Parakeets continued...

My lone parakeet, Squeaky, is still alive after his (or her?) cagemate, Chirpy died on Friday. Took Squeaky (and Chirpy's body) to the vet on Saturday. Vet could not tell cause of death just by looking at the body and I did not want to spend the extra lab fees to find out. I was a little worried about West Nile, but the vet said that was unlikely since the birds were never let to fly outside and we have not had any mosquitos in the house lately. Also, Parakeets are tougher than Crows and Blue Jays when it comes to West Nile.

Squeaky looked healthy except for some discharge from somewhere on his face (I don't see it and can't recall where vet said it was). The vet suggested I change to a pellet diet since Squeaky was just eating seed mix from PetCo. The seed mix is high in fat and also could contain contaminants. My birds have been living on seed mixes for a year, but I guess maybe that wasn't such a good idea. She also suggested removing a rusted bell from the cage and a few other items to give Squeaky more room. I could also do some lab tests on Squeaky to check for various other things, but again, I didn't want to spend the extra fees. Some of Squeaky's chirps sounds like "Hello, Cheapy, cheapy, cheapy.". He's probably telling me something...

Parakeet passing

Two Birds

At dinner this evening, it seemed very quiet. We have two very loud parakeets in the dining room and there were no noises. I figured they were eating so I looked over my shoulder to check on them. Squeaky, the yellow parakeet was quietly sitting on a perch. Chirpy, the green parakeet, was no where to be seen. My first thought was that they somehow pushed the door open and Chirpy escaped (which they have done once before), but the door was locked. So, I got up and looked in the cage. There lay a lifeless Chirpy on the newspaper.

How did Chirpy die? He looked fine yesterday. I wonder what happened? Will Squeaky still be alive tomorrow morning?

What are blogs for?

This is my first blog. Why? Don't know. But, Wikipedia defines Blog as:

A weblog or blog is a web-based publication of periodic articles (posts), usually presented in reverse chronological order. It is an online journal with one or many contributors.

So, I guess that's a good place to start. It took me 20 minutes to figure out what I'm supposed to do here and to quote the above. Seems like a lot of work to express a simple thought. Well, maybe it will get easier.
