<strike>set up printing from OpenSolaris</strike>

A few days ago I set up OpenSolaris 2008.05 under VirtualBox under Vista on my T61P. Unfortunately, I wasn't successful at getting my Samsung ML-1710 laser printer to work, and was left wondering if it was due to VirtualBox or OpenSolaris or misuse of Solaris Print Manager or just being stupid. So I added item 37 to my list of my onboarding tasks: set up printing from OpenSolaris.
Some years ago, setting up the same printer under Linux was no fun either, unless of course wandering around the linux printer database website and having to grok gimp-print and ppd and such is your idea of fun. Later, when I first started playing with Ubuntu 7.something, I was amazed to see it tell me what printer I had as soon as I plugged in the USB cable, and of course it worked. Way cool!
I just installed OpenSolaris natively on a new laptop, plugged in the printer, and had the same joy as under Ubuntu: It knew my printer, it configured the software, and a document printed fine. (I did choose one manual configuration step: disabling the banner page in Solaris Print Manager.)
FWIW, I don't have this printer working with Ubuntu under VMware Player under Vista either. In both cases (OpenSolaris/VirtualBox, Ubuntu/VMware Player), the host indicates that the USB device is assigned to the guest OS, but no luck. Hints?
