GREEN brings more GREEN

I had to do a double take when I saw the news today at SUNW. Something about, Sun Teams With PG&E on First Ever Rebate for Servers, up to $1000 in Savings.

You can get more info at Sun's Energy Rebate Program. Now, I've heard of rebates on energy saving dishwashers, water heaters and other home appliances, but servers? It is true:

    GREEN brings more GREEN
Now, I wonder which rebate pays off faster (i.e. saves more energy)...the latest and greatest dishwasher, or an UltraSPARC T1000 or T2000 server powered by Niagara.

Hey, look at it this way, go ahead and use that old Dell as a space heater this winter.

Comments:

The calculation is easy to do, isnt it? A washer/dryer spends about 4KW per use (I believe). An energy efficient washer/dryer probably will cut that in half Assume you use it once a day, max. T2000 draws 325W (from Sun's data), roughly 1/3 of a typical setup. OK, lets assume half. That makes it 300W/hr savings, or roughly 7.2KWH /day. Thats a savings of roughly (@14cents/KwH) of $1/day per machine. Thats not bad. I'm guessing a T2000 will save you faster. Anything wrong with the reasoning here? (they are all sweeping generalizations, but they should hold, shouldnt they?)
