President Lula at FISL 10

President Lula (President of Brazil) came to FISL. This is probably the first time ever that a President of a nation has visited an Free and Open Source Software conference any where in the world.

Here is a picture taken by Ludovic of the President wearing the OpenSolaris cap and holding a OpenSolaris t-shirt.

Heres a video of the president by Deirdre with the Porto Alegre OpenSolaris User group folks.

FISL 9.0

I attended the FISL 9.0 conference at Porto Alegre, Brazil on 17th, 18th, 19th of April 2008. I guess this is a little late for blogging about the event but something is better than nothing.

This was my first trip to Brazil and I would be presenting a paper titled Can you survive a dowtime ?  at the conference.

FISL is the largest FOSS conference in South America and probably the largest in the world. This year they had 7417 registered attendees and are hoping to reach 10k next year.

My Talk at FISL

My talk was in the main auditorium at 10:00 AM on the first day. Translation service was available. Since there was a huge queue to register there were around 30 people when my talk started. By 10:30 AM there were about 200 people. Most of them were very interested to know about a clustering solution existing on OpenSolaris which they could freely download and use. Some were a bit knowledgeable and asked some questions on fencing. I did not face any tough questions. Marcelo Leall was also present for my talk.

Other than the talk, I had booth duty. Me and Rafael Vanoni were manning the OpenSolaris booth at the Sun stall. But after the first day we gave up our booth space as we were getting sidelined by the coffee vending machine :) . We shifted to the OpenSolaris user group booth. At both the places we talked about Solaris and I also talked about OHAC and how making their applications HA is critical. I also gave my presentation to small groups of people at the stall and Marcelo even recorded some videos. Both Rafael and Marcello helped in translating my talks to Portugese at the booth.

I also attended talks by Josh Berkus on PostgreySQL, Theodore Ts'o talk on Linux and Ext4 File system and Rafael's talk on OpenSolaris Testing.

The other interesting thing me and Rafael tried was to boot up a OLPC with OpenSolaris. We were not successful but we felt it could be done if only we had some codes that were required for the machine to trust the boot device we were trying to use.

The FISL demo area had a number of stalls from Brazil government agencies like Serpro and from other Open Source companies like Debian, Red Hat, Intel, Google (they were hiring engineers).

My talk on Solaris Desktop and Indiana

I also gave a talk on OpenSolaris as a desktop and Indiana at the Port Alegre Open Solaris User group meeting. People were in general very excited about Solaris but most of them were actually using Linux as their desktop.

Overall FISL rocked and I hope to be present there next year.
