New Paper on Antivirus features of Sun StorageTek NAS

As I mentioned many moons ago I have written a paper on the Antivirus features of the Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS appliances.

The paper has been at last been posted on BigAdmin, it is called Antivirus Protection for the Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS Appliance.

 Enjoy!

WORM Files and Compliance on Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS

The Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS Appliance has a license key enabled feature which switches on support for "Compliance Volumes". These volumes allow an application to create files that are immutable for a defined period of time (i.e. the files have a retention period and cannot be changed in any way until the retention period has expired.)

The software is called the Sun StorageTek Compliance Archiving Software. I had planned to write a blog entry about how to use it, but I just found this document that explains how it works very nicely.

We have certified these features with all of the leading Enterprise Content Management applications and, as I mentioned in a previous posting, there are a number of White Papers on this topic here.

Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS and Enterprise Content Management Software

A core activity in my group is the certification of the Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS Appliance with the relevant products from all of our key software partners in the Enterprise Content Management space:
  • Symantec
  • Open Text
  • Computer Associates
  • Mobius
  • IBM/FileNet

This includes certifying the products with the Sun StorageTek Compliance Archiving Software so that we can support their compliance features. We do work with other ECM ISVs as well, but the above are our primary focus. Some of the papers we have written about these ISVs and Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS Appliance are now on Sun's website. Check them out if you are interested in this topic, the papers are all here.

Enjoy.

Anti Virus support and Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS

Part of my role at Sun is responsibility for the certification of antivirus software with Sun StorageTek 5000 NAS Appliances. Certification is the final step of the process required to enable a NAS Appliance to work with an antivirus software product. Prior to certification the NAS Engineering team has to work with the antivirus ISV to ensure that our products work correctly together as all antivirus products work slightly differently.

The way that NAS appliances scan files for viruses is a surprise to many people and I recently wrote an article for the Sun Developers Network on this topic. If you are interested the article, it is here: Protecting CIFS Clients From Viruses Using Sun StorageTek NAS OS. The scanning model described is common to NetApp and EMC NAS appliances..though we are one of the first to standardize on ICAP (see the article if you are getting curious).

The title of the article is very specific in that it references CIFS. As is normal with all the other NAS appliances I have looked at, files that are accessed over NFS are not candidates to be virus scanned (unless they are accessed over CIFS as well as NFS).

I have written a much longer White Paper on this topic that I hope to get posted on www.sun.com sometime soon.
