KEY QUOTES

Sun Wednesday introduced a second-generation model of Thumper–formally called the Sun Fire X4540 Server–that has twice the computing power and is twice as fast as Sun’s original model, but consumes the same amount of power. - Wall Street Journal

With many organizations scrambling to meet exploding demand for storage capacity without constantly expanding their IT staffs, Sun Microsystems continues to push open-source software as a solution, along with a new series of storage arrays and a hybrid server-storage platform...Sun has built its Open Storage initiative around free storage software it offers for download, as well as the company's overall emphasis on free software. - IDG

When used with OpenSolaris and Sun server, the company says storage costs are reduced by up to 90 percent. Customers can freely mix and match components and re-use hardware by adding new software as their business needs change. - Blocks & Files

The new Sun Storage J4000 arrays are being pitched in much the same way as previous "Open Editions" of the StorageTek lineup. We're talking industry standard hardware and open-source software, so the box can be plugged into servers purchased by a wide variety of vendors. - The Register
The J4000 and Sun's software should smooth out transitions at Oregon State University's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), according to Chuck Sears, manager of research computing...Sun's storage technology, especially ZFS, works well with COAS' Solaris servers and makes those unexpected changes easier to carry out, according to Sears. The college is an early user of the J4000 series and sees it as a good tool to keep up with data needs into the future...Because the storage system works so well with Solaris, which powers about 75 percent of the college's servers, COAS is looking to move the rest over, too. - IDG
