Check out the NEW Oracle Solaris Virtualization Whitepaper

A NEW Oracle Solaris Virtualization Whitepaper is now available.  Virtualization with Oracle Solaris 10 discusses how Oracle offers the most complete portfolio of end-to-end virtualization solutions available today. With full stack management from applications to disk, Oracle solutions can help companies consolidate systems, gain greater efficiency, rapidly deploy solutions, and more. Each virtualization technology comes with its own set of advantages–making it important to understand when and how they can best be deployed. Providing varying degrees of flexibility, availability, and security, these technologies can be used separately or together to affect better resource utilization and reduce infrastructure complexity. Solutions are available at every layer of the infrastructure–from operating system and resource virtualization, to virtual machines and hard partitioning, to desktops and storage.

New White Paper - How to Optimize Oracle Solaris Applications for Intel Platforms

It has been awhile since I have blogged as well as having some writers block during my Sun to Oracle transition. I was fortunate to land in Solaris where I was prior-which I am so thankful for.  In my new role at Oracle working on the Solaris Technical Content Team - I am focused on delivering Solaris technical content for Virtualization and Security- working with some excellent people by the way!

I wanted to give an inside to some new cool collateral that is being delivered by others from my team.  Mike Mulkey, one of my partners in crime just worked with a team of folks at Oracle and Intel on delivering How to Optimize Oracle Solaris Applications for Intel Platforms.

This is a technical guide for developers and sysadmins that explains how to use the capabilities of Solaris to optimize the scalability, performance, reliability, security, power efficiency, and virtualization of applications running on Intel's Xeon processor family (5600 and 7500 series).

Here is a snapshot of what the paper touches on. This paper discusses the major Solaris capability and describes how it has been optimized. For example ...

  • How Solaris enhances Intel multicore processor capabilities—up to 8 processor sockets, each with up to 8 cores and 2 threads per core—as well as Intel Hyper-Threading, QuickPath, and Turbo Boost technologies.
  • How Solaris Fault Management Architecture (FMA) integrates with the Intel Machine Check Architecture (MCA) Recovery features, enabling systems to automatically monitor, report, and recover from hardware errors to maintain data integrity and keep missioncritical applications and services online.
  • How Solaris takes advantage of the dynamic power management capabilities of the Intel processors.
  • How Solaris takes advantage of the latest Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) features and enables the highest consolidation ratios.

To download white paper it is available on this page

Linux Conference Australia - Four days and counting!

The new year has arrived and I haven't blogged in quite some time so I thought I would start out the new year informing people about a great open source event that is taking place in New Zealand - where my co-worker Glynn Foster resides.. (Kiwi is what they refer to Glynn here in the states)

Glynn actually does have involvement here, hence the mention of him.  So, the event I wanted to mention is the  Linux Conference Australia - it will be taking place next week January 18th-23rd. The conference will have two OpenSolaris related tracks - ZFS in the Data Storage and Retrieval miniconf and Sourcejuicer in the Distro miniconf.  This is great exposure for OpenSolaris within the Linux Community.

About Linux Conference Australia

linux.conf.au is a conference about Open Source Software, including Linux that brings together the world's community of Linux enthusiasts who contribute to the Linux operating system and the vast array of free and open source software that is transforming information technology across the globe.

This is the 2nd time LCA has been held in New Zealand, with Dunedin hosting the conference in 2006. Hosted each year in one of Australasia's major centres, in 2010 linux.conf.au will be hosted by New Zealand's capital city, Wellington.

Registrations will open on Sunday 17 January in the early afternoon. linux.conf.au will begin with two days of Miniconfs: Monday 18 January and Tuesday 19 January 2010. Miniconfs cater to a wide range of special interests from the Linux kernel to gaming, wireless security to OpenOffice.org, education to virtualisation.

The main conference runs from Wednesday 20 January to Friday 22 January 2010. Each day will open with a keynote and will consist of multiple streams of presentations, tutorials, and birds of a feather. There will plenty of choice throughout.

Saturday 23 January is the Open Day, where IT experts will be given the opportunity to showcase their products/services in the format of either a display or exhibition. The Open Day will introduce the public to free and open source software. It is the perfect place to learn about the linux community and to play with emerging technologies.

Check out the schedule and attend the conference if you happen to be in New Zealand next week!! Have a pint or two with Glynn if you are there!
