3-in-1 - Patch 6 for GlassFish v2.1 Now Available

ALT DESCR

We released GlassFish v2.1.1 at the end of October. As with GlassFish v2.1, this release played two roles: it was a public, no-fee, release, and it was also a commercial patch for earlier versions in the GlassFish v2 family. GlassFish v2.1.1 is, thus, also GFv2.1 p6 and SJS AS 9.1U2 p12. GFv2.1.1 addresses 121 new defects since the previous patch.

The patches are delivered in several formats (file and pkg) and became available at SunSolve in early December. More details on the release, including the list of bugs addressed, are available at GlassFish For Business, and at SunSolve. I've also updated the GlassFish v2 Family Overview.

Patch 5 for GlassFish v2.1 Now Available

ALT DESCR

The latest sustaining (for-fee) release of the GlassFish Server is now available: GFv2.1p5 fixes 27 new bugs GFv2.1p5 is also a patch release (p11) for the earlier GFv2U2; collectively all the patch releases in that family addressed 211 bugs.

Sustaining releases are available at the Basic level of Sun GlassFish Portfolio; higher subscription levels entitle different levels of customer support and access to the GlassFish Enterprise Manager

Recall that all our bug fixes also get incorporated into the next public release, in this case GFv2.1.1; patches give our customers the benefits of timely releases and isolated bug fixes; check Sun's GlassFish Support Model for more details.

For visual impact, below is the cumulative list of all the bugs fixed in this patch release since GFv2U2:

Hudson Commercial Support From Sun

ALT DESCR

Kohsuke and I have been hinting at this for a while (and we pre-announced it at JavaOne) and now it is official: reflecting the continued growth of Hudson Adoption, Sun now provides Commercial Support for Hudson.

Formally speaking, the offer is part of the Recently Announced WebStack 1.5 and you buy it via the GlassFish Portfolio Offering. In a nutshell, we are providing sustaining support, with priority treatment for bug fixes filed by customers. We also can provide consultative support for people interested in, say, creating private plugins or improving their internal Agile processes. Kohsuke has collected all the key pointers into this Summary Page.

Additional links include the Features in the Offer, Terms of Support (bottom of main page) and Service-Level Agreement (bottom of main page). As always, we appreciate your feedback to help us continue to improve Hudson and Sun's offerings.

Painless Bleeding Edge Software? OpenSSO Express Build 7 Now Available

ALT DESCR

The Smoking Monkey has announced the release of OpenSSO Express Build 7, which includes key new features including:

• Federation with Google Apps Premier
• Additional Containers (like GlassFish v3 Prelude!)
• Support for OpenDS Standard Edition

OpenSSO Express is a very interesting product as it is an integral part of our official Roadmap and is fully supported. Sun will answer questions and will fix bugs on it but, unlike with OpenSSO Enterprise, customers are required to upgrade to a later Express or to the Enterprise binary to get the fixes.

The upgrade requirement means that the sustaining tail is much shorter, and manageable, which is why we can push the Express releases as often as we do. An Express release is not for all types of customers but it is ideal for those that want the latest features now and are willing to upgrade later; and those that do not want them just wait for the Enterprise releases. To simplify the sales story, the support plan for OpenSSO Enterprise includes OpenSSO Express.

Other related entries are tagged OpenSSO.

GlassFish v3 Prelude - Support and more Launch Coverage

GlassFish v3 Prelude

Looking back at last Thursday's launch of GlassFish v3 Prelude, we have had a great number of blog entries, a lot from the engineers, many from the community, all are diverse, informative and passionate. Clearly, OSGi, RESTful Web Services, support for Rails and Grails, and technology previews (JSF 2.0, JAX-RS 1.0, EJB 3.1) were the most noticed features.

One thing that could probably be emphasized here (the Prelude FAQ covers this) is the fact that this is a fully supported (use it in production) release, not just a "preview" of some later product. The differences between the community product and GlassFish Enterprise are outlined on this page. Subscriptions are available online.

Here are more blog posts and coverage since the launch :

Sun OpenSSO Express - Support for OpenSSO Stable Milestones!

Transparent development opens the development milestones to users. Often these milestones are just a path to using the final releases - as in GlassFish Enterprise Support - but for some users the milestones may have the right combination of features/stability/timeliness and they "just want support for it". And today, to address this need for Open SSO users, Sun announced OpenSSO Express.

ALT DESCR

Sun OpenSSO Express provides support (in standard, premium and premium plus levels) for the stable milestones in OpenSSO bundled, at no extra cost, with the support of final releases of Sun Access Manager, Identity Management or Java Enterprise System.

The Express model is applicable to any open source projects, but, so far, it is only available for OpenSSO. Details on Sun OpenSSO Express are available at here and it can be downloaded here

GlassFish v2 Support - How it works

Validating a Bug Fix Diagram

Alexis has just written a fairly detailed description of Sun's commercial support for GlassFish (via its SJS AS brand). This complements my earlier Overview and the commentary on how we Don't do Bait and Switch.

Alexis writeup covers SLAs, phone support (complementing USERS@gf), knowledge databases and indemnification - for cases like this. The writeup also explains sustaining releases; recent interactions with users suggest these are poorly known so we may expand on them again later.
