GlassFish commercial supported versions - January updates

Last november Roadmap Update covers different topics such as the fact that GlassFish remains open source, that there won't be a commercial version of GlassFish 4. But an other important topic addressed in that announcement is the fact that Oracle continues to commercially support GlassFish v3 for the years to come. In fact, the now old Sun Java System Applications Server 8, who predated GlassFish, is still commercially supported too!

So on the commercial support front, it is business as usual. Oracle has just released Oracle GlassFish Server Bundle Patches 3.1.2.8, Sun Java System Application Server 8.1.36 and 8.2.20. Customers with a valid support contract can get those different updates on My Oracle Support. This GlassFish 4 Business entry has all the details including the different Patch ID's, the addressed issues, etc.

Oracle GlassFish Server 3.1.2 and 2.1.1 updates

Support and maintenance is one of the added value of Oracle GlassFish Server, the commercial version of GlassFish.

Two GlassFish Patches have been released in July, one for the 3.1.2 version and another for the 2.1.1 version (Java EE 5!). For those who can't move to a more recent version of Java EE, Oracle continue to provide support for the older version of the product, Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server 2.1.1 in this case.

This GlassFish For Business post provides more details on those two Patches which are available on the My Oracle Support portal.

Oracle GlassFish Server update

Oracle GlassFish Server is the commercial supported version of GlassFish. It includes, under the GlassFish Server Control umbrella, some added features such as Performance Tunner, Monitoring Scripting Client, the Load Balancer Web Server Plug-in, etc.  In addition, another key value of this offering is obviously Oracle's Commercial Support for GlassFish.

This GlassFish For Business post describes in more details the 3 pacthes that have been released in April 2013:

  • Oracle GlassFish Server 3.1.2 Patch 5
  • Oracle GlassFish Server 3.0.1 Patch 7
  • GlassFish Load Balancher Plug-in 3.1.2.4

Those patches are available to customers with a valid support contract on the My Oracle Support portal.

"GlassFish for Business" Updates - GlassFish 3.1.2 and 2.1.1 Patch Releases

In addition to the Server Control, the other value of Oracle GlassFish Server (compared to the Open Source Edition) is the support and maintenance delivered around the product.

GlassFish for Business keeps track of all the patch releases and now has descriptions up for Oracle GlassFish Server (OGFS) v3.1.2 Patch 4 and Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server (SGFS) v2.1.1 Patch 20.

GlassFish for Business

You might consider these releases minor but to operations they're the crucial ones - highly compatibles with timely fixes (some of which came as a result of customer escalations).

In case you are wondering this has nothing to do with the recent Java security vulnerability. That vulnerability is pretty specific to Java Applets and does not affect GlassFish or Java EE in general. More on that soon...

Sister blog - GlassFish for Business

While this Aquarium blog is a one-stop-shop for anything GlassFish and Java EE from Oracle and from the community, we also maintain a GlassFish for Business blog for those of you interested in making the most of your GlassFish commercial license.

GlassFish For Business Blog

The most recent post there, "Difference between GlassFish Open Source and Commercial Editions", covers just that - why even acquire an Oracle GlassFish Server license? Is is just the support or is there anything more? (hint: there's more).

Another recent post covers the release of Oracle GlassFish Server 3.1.1 Patch 2, a great example of the value for GlassFish customers - a regular cadence of patch releases.

GlassFish 3.0.1.2 (Patch 2, using IPS)

ALT DESCR

Oracle released earlier this month (Jan 2011) a patch release for its supported customers under the name Oracle GlassFish Server 3.0.1 Patch 2.

If you've been following these restricted releases, you may have seen the issues we've had with patch 1 which was actually cancelled. So this is effectively the first patch release for the 3.0 family. The next patch release should come around the April timeframe.

As we've done previously, this patch release is documented on the "GlassFish For Business" blog with patch references for various platforms, the list of bugs fixed and where to actually get the bits. This blog also has background on the Commercial Offerings from Oracle if you are not yet familiar with it.

Installing the update involves accessing support.oracle.com (My Oracle Support) and setting up your IPS update server.

Supported customers - read this

ALT DESCR

Oracle GlassFish Server customers and former Sun GlassFish Enterprise customers were using SunSolve to get to individual patches and GlassFish patch releases (see this Blog entry on "GlassFish For Business" for how we deliver support) up until now.

SunSolve is being retired (see this earlier heads-up blog) and you are encouraged to read this Transition to My Oracle Support FAQ for Legacy Sun Customers.

My Oracle Support (MOS) will integrate all the existing services and become the single support portal for all of your Oracle support needs. The full migration should be effective by the time you read these lines (Dec 13th 2010). MOS has been open to former Sun customers for a little while to set up and verify account credentials using your Sun contract number to register. More details on accessing the service using standard Oracle SSO accounts can be found in this FAQ.

Once you're able to log into MOS, you'll need to add Support Identifiers to your account. All legacy Sun patches (probably the most important feature to many GlassFish customers) are available in the Patches section on My Oracle Support.

First Patch for Oracle GlassFish Server 3.0.1

Yesterday Oracle released the first commercial - just for customers - patch for GlassFish 3.0.1. GlassFish 3.0.1 Patch 1 (also called GlassFish 3.0.1.1) addresses 7 bug fixes. As usual, I've created a new entry in GlassFishForBusiness and have updated the GlassFish 3 Family Overview.

Customers can update to this release from either the Open Source or the Oracle distributions of GlassFish 3.0.1; see Chapter 10 in the Administration Guide.

The structure of the GlassFish 3 family is shown here. For a richer release structure, covering 3 years and 23 releases, check out that for GlassFish 2 here.

Oracle has released patch 6 for Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server 2.1.1 via SunSolve. This commercial (i.e. available to customers) patch is also patch 12 for GlassFish 2.1 and patch 18 for v2U2.

Patches are cumulative: p6 addresses 23 new fixes since p5 but includes fixes for 139 issues since 2.1.1 and 870 since 2.1U2.

GlassFish For Business (RSS) includes posts for each individual GlassFish release and also has overviews for each family (see, e.g., GF2.11p6 and GFv2 Family).

Navigating SunSolve - Patches for GlassFish and SailFin

SunSolve is the standard Sun mechanism for distributing "patches" to Sun products, with content ranging from Free Public Releases and Security Patches to For-Free bug-fixing patches (the majority) and is in a multiplicity of formats, from ZIPs to PKG(5).

ALT DESCR

SunSolve has been adding features recently, including some navigational help that I just discovered, so sharing them...

• A twitter account: @SunPatches,
• New, per-product, content pages, including SailFin Patches and GlassFish Patches.
• Better Introduction, Home Page and PatchFinder.

A full-list of categories is here - I'm afraid the GlassFish-related products fall under several places; to help you, we summarize them at GlassFishForBusiness and we report them via Twitter at @GlassFish.

I do not yet know what is the transition story for SunSolve to Oracle, but we will let you know as we find out.

Patch 1 for GlassFish v2.1.1 Now Available

ALT DESCR

We released GlassFish v2.1.1 at the end of October and last week we released our first commercial patch for it.

Due to how the multiple releases intersect, this patch is also GFv2.1 p7 and SJS AS 9.1U2 p13. GFv2.1.1 p1 addresses 31 new defects since GFv2.1.1.

The patches are delivered in several formats (file and pkg) and became available at SunSolve in December 18th. More details on the release, including the list of bugs addressed, are available at GlassFish For Business, and at SunSolve.

I've also updated the GlassFish v2 Family Overview and created a new entry for a GlassFish v3 Family Overview.
