Mark your calendars - Java Day - November 4th 2010, in New York

On Thursday, November 4, 2010, Oracle (OTN) will be hosting a Developer Day called "You are the future of Java" in the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York City. Check out the schedule and expect this to be a full day of presentations and hands-on experiences, packed with developer content from JavaOne 2010.

The event will cover Java EE, Java SE and Desktop, Java ME, and Embedded Java in separate tracks. From the Java EE and GlassFish side of things, we've been working hard on the content so that it is fresh and useful to anyone interested in getting started with these technologies. The focus is on Java EE 6 and GlassFish 3.x (both 3.0.1 and the soon-to-be-released 3.1). For the platform perspective you'll have the opportunity to listen to a overview talk and participate to no less than three hands-on labs covering most of the new and enhanced features of Java EE 6. Registration is free.

This will go on tour throughout Europe in the weeks to come and soon after in APAC, so keep you eyes open for the announcement of an event nearby!

GlassFish Day Milan Report - Link to presentations

Milan Cathedral

We've just held the first GlassFish Day outside of the US (the previous one happened during JavaOne last May).

Here is a page on the GlassFish Wiki with all the presentations slides. As you will see it covers sister projects such as portal, OpenESB, OpenMQ, Jersey and more. The end result was an energetic event with interesting interactions with the attendees and it's always interesting to learn about what people are doing with the technology.

Ed Ort has a review of the event with reaction from the audience. Next stop Beijing!

Upcoming GlassFish Events

GlassFish Day in Milan logo

Beyond delivering the greatest possible product, one of the objectives around GlassFish v2 was to reach out to developers, users and community members. We've started doing this through blogging and participation to different Java User Groups and developer events. Expect to see more of that in the future. In fact, starting this month here's a set of GlassFish-related events:

•  Sun TechDays, Boston (USA) September 11-12
•  JavaZone, Oslo (Norway) September 12-13
•  Rails Conference Europe, Berlin (Germany) September 17-19
•  Midwest Java Technology Days, Columbus/Indianapolis/Minneapolis/Chicago (USA) September/october
•  Sun TechDays, Rome (Italy) September 24-25
•  Sun TechDays, Milan (Italy) September 26-28
•  JHUG Tech Day, Athens (Greece) October 6

We're also anticipating some events in Asia/Pacific later in the year and in early 2008. If you would like to have a visit to your company, JUG, or suggest an event, please leave a comment here. We've also added an "Events" section on the right-hand side of TheAquarium and we'll try to keep it up to date.

Eat, Drink, and Learn

A Glass of Beer

It's a shame that engineers don't like free stuff. If they did, Sakthi's tip about the upcoming JRuby Hack Day would be perfect. Experts from Sun and Joyent will show how to develop and deploy JRuby applications on GlassFish (to get some impressive performance and scalability results [1, 2, 3]). A catered dinner and open bar will also be provided.

But I'm sure none of you would be interested in getting all of that for free. So you won't need details like the time (August 8), location (Axis Cafe in San Francisco), or registration page (hurry to guarantee your spot).

Like I said--it's a real shame. ;)

Many blogs logo

This week is, the Free and Open Source Software event at Bangalore. The event is happening at Bangalore Palace Grounds. The event used to be called Linux-Bangalore and hosted by a local linux user group, the event has metamorphosed this year to include the larger FOSS community.

From what bloggers say, the event is very succesful. Bloggers include fossdotinblog, Binod, Navaneeth, Stephen and Shalini.

Project GlassFish is represented, as is its use with NetBeans 5 to write some Java EE 5 applications. Here is a Flash Demo which seems to be based on the example described in Pavel's recent blog. The NetBeans side has a more polished Demo, as well as several other demos.
