GlassFish Portfolio - CommunityOne Slides

ALT DESCR

I've uploaded the slides for my presentation at CommunityOne on Sun GlassFish Portfolio (S307894). I start with a recap of the project and an assessment of adoption, then do a review the GlassFish Portfolio and end with a blitz through projects with links to sessions and pods. There are many slides but several are build-ups and I hope to have time for Q&A.

Slides at PDF@SLX and SlideShare; I'll create a SlideCast later.

GlassFish and OpenSSO Party Reminder @ The Thirsty Bear

ALT DESCR

A reminder that tomorrow, Sunday May 31st, is our GlassFish and OpenSSO Unconference and also the Party at The Thirsty Bear.

The Thirsty Bear is a popular hangout during JavaOne; they have great food and drinks and it is very close to The Moscone (see Google, Live). An RSVP is appreciated to assess food needs.

PS. I have not been able to post news recently because of J1/C1 preparations - plus this year's extra distraction - but this year my commitments are early in the week and I will try to catch up afterwards.

Portal Development with Portal Pack 3.0.1

Portal Pack Logo

Portal Development (especially with WebSpace) is made even easier with the recent release of Portal Pack 3.0.1 [download]. Several new features are added, including theme development (including code completion for Velocity), directory deployment/deploy-on-save for rapid testing, Liferay service builder support, and more.

for questions and tips, make sure to visit one of many of the community venues, including the mailing lists or #webspace IRC Channel, or contribute on the growing Wiki.

Also, don't miss the Portal Pack and WebSpace teams at the UnConference, and at CommunityOne and JavaOne.

WebSpace Server 10.1 - It's happening again!

WebSpace Mascot

On the heels of the successful 10.0 release, the WebSpace server team brings you another series of community and milestone builds for the next release, 10.1. The first in this series, WebSpace server 10.1 Community Build 1, is now available. Just like the 10.0 development effort, this series gives you a chance to exercise new features and updates that will be in the 10.1 release, leading up to the final release. You can expect a number of Community and Milestone builds to follow.

for questions and tips, make sure to visit us at one of many of the community venues, including the forum or #webspace IRC Channel, or contribute on the growing Wiki (more on this later!).

Also, don't miss us at the UnConference, and at CommunityOne and JavaOne.

JavaOne / CommunityOne UnConference ... and Party

ALT DESCR

This year's CommunityOne (West) starts a day before JavaOne, which gives us another opportunity to host an Unconference (see 2008 page) down in one of the big rooms at the Moscone Center. The event would be in the afternoon of Sunday, May 31st, so, if you are planning to attend C1 and/or J1 consider arranging your availability and/or travel plans to get there a bit earlier.

This year we will cover the full range of projects under the GlassFish Portfolio umbrella (Server, WebSpace Server, ESB, Web Stack, Hudson, Communications Server, Mobility Platform) as well as the Identity projects (OpenSSO, OpenDS, IdMgr, RoleMgr)...

Like last year, we will also follow-up with a party at The Thirsty Bear (@GoogleMaps).

Agile Adam - 50 minutes, 0 slides

ALT DESCR

Adam Bien is back from CommunityOne East in NYC and his "Pragmatic Java EE development" session is already online along with a few others. There are no slides, just code.

While Adam uses NetBeans and GlassFish, the session is not about using wizards that generate code in you back but rather standard, convention over configuration, Java EE 5 artifacts. This was apparently all done on a brand new laptop with very little time to setup the environment.

The pace of this presentation is good (I believe the "deploy-on-change" helps a bit here) and from the batch of questions received, I can certainly relate to how difficult it is to appeal to both people that take Java EE 5 for granted (and want to see EE 6 in action) and people seeing JAX-WS, EJB 3, and JPA for the first time.

OpenSSO Community Day - NYC - March 17 2009

OpenSSO Community Day Banner

Eduardo mentioned CommunityOne back in December, when he announced the call for papers. CommunityOne East, to be held at the Marriott Marquis at Times Square, New York City, on March 18-19, is fast approaching now, and I'm pleased to announce that, on the day before CommunityOne East, Tuesday 17th March 2009, the OpenSSO Community will be gathering just a couple of miles down Broadway at New York University's Kimmel Center for the very first OpenSSO Community Day.

This is a unique opportunity for OpenSSO contributors, deployers and users to get together for a whole day of presentations and discussion in an 'unconference' format - the only fixed agenda item right now is to figure out the agenda. We're collecting ideas over the next few weeks at the OpenSSO wiki; if you're thinking of attending, do go there, take a look, and add any topics you want to speak on or hear about. Admission is free, with breakfast and lunch provided, and Daniel says he'll even bankroll the first round in the pub afterward .

So, if you're heading to New York City for CommunityOne, why not go early for a day (and possibly night!) of OpenSSO. If you're based in NYC, well, you have no excuse, go sign up, right now!

Call For Papers: JavaOne and CommunityOne

The call for papers for the JavaOne 2009 (@ San Francisco) is out. And so is that for ComunityOne 2009, except that this year there are two events, East and West. Note that both CFPs close later this month.

GlassFish Lightning Talks this Monday at CommunityOne

CommunityOne logo

CommunityOne is now as early as this next Monday. Among the GlassFish-related sessions we'll have a set of eight "lightning talks" at 4pm in Esplanade 305. The topics and speakers for this 1-hour session have only been confirmed recently so they didn't make it into the official schedule.

Here's the list: GreenFire (a recent JAX award), Underworld (Adam Bien), IzPack (Julien's contribution), Terracotta (Ari Zilka), SailFin (Ericsson's Christer Boberg), RTL use-case (by Daniel Chan), Hudson and Embedded GlassFish (by Kohsuke).

These talks will be very fast paced and some really nothing but a demo. I think we have a good line-up to make this an interesting session for everyone. Hope to see you there. As a reminder, CommunityOne is a free event. Registration is here.

What is an Unconference? Find Out on May 4th

Duke on Comfy Chair

If you have never attended an Unconference, this is your opportunity! We are hosting one for the GlassFish community the Sunday before JavaOne, at the Moscone (map).

The topics and speakers in an unconference are decided by the attendees themselves (see the Open Space principles). The only thing you need to do now is to go to the Wiki page and record your intent to attend and your topics of interest; we already have 26 people.

Alexis is Organizing the Event; there is discussion at the Advocacy list. Full details of the pre-J1 events at the the Unconference, Party and CommunityOne page.

Overview of GlassFish Unconference and CommunityOne

GF UnConference and CommunityOne lOgo

I've updated the GlassFish Event Page with the latest information on the 2008 GlassFish Unconference and CommunityOne.

I have linked to 18 sessions related to GlassFish, covering AppServer, MQ, Portal, Social Software, ESB, FAM, Scripting, Persistence and Web Tier.

Some of the sessions are in the GF "track", others are listed elsewhere. This means you can't be in all the sessions you likely want to attend, so bring a friend and compare notes.
