GlassFish 3.1 : auto-upgrade or not to auto-upgrade?

If you have a GlassFish 3.0.1 installation you probably have been notified that you can update this installation to the newly released GlassFish 3.1 using the update center.

This will do an In-Place Upgrade with the new bits (some 75MB pulled off of the repository for the open source edition for instance).

You can of course also chose a Side-By-Side Upgrade. Both approaches are documented in the Upgrade Guide.

If you've installed GlassFish 3.0.1 as part of a NetBeans bundle such as 6.9(.1) you probably should not blindly update and rather use the recommended NetBeans 7.0 beta 2 for GlassFish 3.1. To stop the pop-up notification you can also use the Update Tool to disable it altogether, leaving you to manually check for updates.

If you intend to stay with 3.0.1, keep an eye on the GlassFishForBusiness blog for associated patch updates.

First Patch for Oracle GlassFish Server 3.0.1

Yesterday Oracle released the first commercial - just for customers - patch for GlassFish 3.0.1. GlassFish 3.0.1 Patch 1 (also called GlassFish addresses 7 bug fixes. As usual, I've created a new entry in GlassFishForBusiness and have updated the GlassFish 3 Family Overview.

Customers can update to this release from either the Open Source or the Oracle distributions of GlassFish 3.0.1; see Chapter 10 in the Administration Guide.

The structure of the GlassFish 3 family is shown here. For a richer release structure, covering 3 years and 23 releases, check out that for GlassFish 2 here.

Which Way From Here? GlassFish RoadMap

Do as Alice and ask one of our Cheshire cats about the roadmap for the open source GlassFish Server under the new Oracle ownership.

The first opportunity is Tuesday morning, at 9am PT, when Steve Harris will provide a short overview during his EclipseCon keynote. EclipseCon also has other opportunities.

Then, on Thursday at noon PT, I will dust off the old TheAquarium Online and will host a community meeting on the topic; check the GF.TV Wiki tomorrow for a confirmation on the concall information.

Replay / slide information will be made available afterwards at
