Eduardo already provided a response to Ovum's recent comments on Sun's software strategy but I thought I'd provide an additional posting regarding their specifc comments about Sun's Portal Server.
Here's what they said - "Sun's portal offering is good, but boring. Sun's portal technology is 'OK' - but it's not world beating."

Well some would disgree that it's not world beating; for example - Gartner has ranked Sun's Portal Server as a leader for the last five consecutive years (that is - every year that Portal has been available) - that's hard to ignore. As a secod data point - a whole bunch of people just voted Sun's Portal Server the "Best SOA Portal Platform" in the Web Service Journal Reader's Choice Awards (WebMethods, BEA and IBM were runners-up).

But that's not all; recently, the product was spiced-up with a new community framework (an end user can create their own portals), wiki integration, and lots of cool developer enhancements, including AJAX support, and lots more. I can't imagine all that innovation went into the product so it could be thrown onto the BBQ ! So, I'm sure the product team would be happy sit down with Ovum and hear what they think of the new Java System Portal Server 7.

BTW - If you're interested in more portal stuff, check out the Portal Zone blog.
