GlassFish v3 Preview - Now Available!!

The GlassFish v3 Preview release is now available. This is an Early Access release of Java EE 6 - Welcome to JavaOne 2009!

Check out the Download Page. Also see the page on JavaEE 6 Standards, the Docs and Resources, the GFv3 Document Set, and the SDK Release Notes, and the GFv3 Release Notes.

The release comes in two bundles, corresponding to the JavaEE 6 Web Profile and the JavaEE 6 full specification. The size of the bundle varies depending on packaging and features but ranges from 40MB to 60MBs. Remember that you can start with the "small" release (i.e. web profile) and easily add the missing pieces via the integrated update center.

Is possible to update a v3-prelude installation to the v3-preview?

Yes you could by simply adding the v3preview "stable" repository to the updatetool (or using the pkg CLI) - It might be a little tricky understanding which IPS packages to install (some are updates, many are new) to reproduce the Web or Full distros available on the web site.

I forgot to add that you really should add the repository definition, update the pkg packages and restart from there. A lot of enhancements have gone into the updated IPS/pkg bits themselves since Prelude.

I checked with Abhijit and he said the upgrade work will be focused on the Prelude -> v3 fcs/september release. Since Preview is not supported, I'd stick with a clean installation of Preview for now

What is the relationship between this release and the promoted builds at Thanks!

And if you don't want an installer (glassfish-v3-preview-b49-windows.exe), does (20 MB bigger) contain the binaries?

Posted by René Leonhardt on June 06, 2009 at 03:22 AM PDT #

@Cay: promoted builds have more tests than daily/nightly but less than the Preview release from this JavaOne.

@René: the zip file has a domain1 created for you. Not sure why it's that much bigger.

I can solve the mistery of zip distribution size difference :-) It is 20 MB larger because it contains uncompressed jar files whereas installer distributions contain compressed jar files and installer unpacks them at installation time. Other than that, binaries are identical...
