Awesome recent applications command

In a terminal (I use iTerm), type:
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add \\
   '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
killall Dock
and a recent apps menu will appear on your dock. Awesome.

file sharing consolidation

Mac OS X 10.5 has consolidated the file sharing protocols AFP, SAMBA, and FTP, all in one place under system preferences->sharing->file sharing. Nice to have it all one place, and they've added - or re-added - folder sharing.

Getting ready for Leopard

Interesting article: Preparing for Leopard.

It has one of my favorite words: "cruft".

iBank for Mac

iBank, from IGG Software, LLC, is a pretty awesome Cocoa-based application for personal finance. I've been looking for something to take the place of Quicken For Macintosh and iBank meets all my needs but one: the application does not as of yet download transactions from financial institutions. The user must download the transactions by hand into a QFX, QIF, or CVS file, and then import them into iBank. So far, the lack of automatic download capabiity has not been a great hindrance.

iBank has a number of clever features. My personal favorite thus far is the notion of a “Smart Account”. For Quicken users, this is something like generating a report, except that the “Smart Account” holds transactions (virtual transactions) from other accounts based on filters. Very much akin to “Smart Mailboxes” in Mail.app, “Smart Accounts” are most triumphant: the user does not have to generate a report, the “Smart Account” is up-to-date automatically.

Read this review of iBank.

I am sold on iBank. As a further note, neither myself nor Sun has any connection to IGG Software of which I am aware. iBank is just a superior product.
