Grid is Passé

According to a recent study done by the 451 Group, "grid" is no longer a cool buzzword. I guess we'll have to rename Grid Engine to Virtualization Engine or Software as a Service Engine or SOA Engine. Or maybe we should do like Prince and just become a symbol. Maybe a pound sign (#). Whatcha think?

Comments:

It has been only recently the case that general IT management and purchasing departments have acquired some idea (albeit vague) of what a "grid" is and what its used for. It is usually the case that larger cluster installations typically wind up being managed by the larger monolithic IT organizations who are also responsible for other general enterprise services (e.g. email, file service, web). I point all this out because getting infrastructure for HPC resources has been difficult in the past because CIOs haven't had a good feel for what the money was for. That has definitely changed and they no longer get puzzled looks when discussing "grids". (Well they are less puzzled). So I'll stick with the "grid" terminology as long as it keeps teh money flowing from senior leadership. This is interesting because at one point we used the word "bioinformatics" to describe the discipline(s) relating to the intersection of life sciences and IT. However granting agencies such as the NIH no longer get excited over this term even when ,in my opinion, it is still quite useful. Now we tend to discuss concepts such as "systems biology" and "translational medicine", which (in my mind), are instances of bioinformatics but I'll call it whatever the people with the money want me to call it ! In the end if we develop some new concept or word to capture the essence of grids, HPC, etc then we should also be prepared to market it intelligently towards funding agencies and CIOs.
