Fischer Gone Bad?

While poking around the team homepages on GameKnot, (My username there is templedf. Come play!) I came across this article on Bobby Fischer working on getting Icelandic citizenship. Huh?

A little Yahooing turned up this article, which says that the US wants Fischer for violating the international sanctions against the former Yugoslavia by participating in a chess tournament there. (He won a $3.3 million purse!)

This article explains that Fischer was warned not to participate by the US and made a very public display of attending anyway. It also talks a little about his anti-semitism and anti-Americanism. Oy!

According to this article, he's still in prison in Japan. Iceland comes into the picture because Japanese law says that he can be deported there instead of the US if he's a citizen of Iceland.

Where does this leave us? With a whole pile of international name calling. Check out this site. And as is required in this sort of situation, check out the Free Bobby website.

I think the lesson we can take from this is that it's not good to become a paranoid nut job when you're internationally famous. Word to live by.
