Recently Oracle published an updated roadmap for SPARC and announced changes in the Oracle Solaris lifecycle. Solaris moves to a continuous integration/continous delivery release model with Solaris 11.x. The minimum time span for Solaris 11 Premier Support has been extended to 2031, and for Extended Support to 2034 respectively. Also the Oracle Guarantee Program has been extended to at least 2021. Under this program applications built on the public Solaris ABI since Solaris 2.6 (i.e. since about twenty(!) years) are guaranteed to be binary compatible with Solaris 11 - obviously on the same ISA i.e. SPARC or x86 - and source code compatible with the other. Longevity has alwyas been a strong argument - and differentiator - for SPARC/Solaris - this has just become even stronger!
Today John Fowler, who heads Systems development and reports directly to Larry Ellison, has published a video in which he summarizes Oracle's SPARC and Solaris strategy.

Our upcoming Oracle Solaris Tech Day on March 9th in Munich will be another opportunity to learn especially about the Solaris aspects directly from the source. Markus Flierl who is in charge of the Solaris development underneath John Fowler will present there.
