Oracle’s Global Sustainability team is thrilled to highlight Global Sustainability Director and Head of Sustainability Strategy EMEA, Elena Avesani, as she was ranked in Sustainability Magazine’s Top 100 Women in Sustainability as a result of her 13-year-long commitment in shaping and driving Oracle’s sustainability journey.

Elena recognized a need for a sustainability strategy at Oracle back in 2009, when she joined forces with Rich Kroes, now VP of Global Sustainability, and successfully launched a program that focused on Oracle’s own environmental and social impact as well as helping Oracle’s customers leverage their use of Oracle solutions for their own sustainability journeys. Oracle’s environmental policy and first materiality assessment were created to drive the priorities that shaped the program over the years.

Thus, Oracle’s first sustainability goals were born. Progress towards the goals is monitored on an ongoing basis and additional goals have been added over the years to drive additional change. Elena was instrumental in making the case for Oracle’s latest commitment: reaching Net Zero by 2050 and Oracle joining the Exponential Roadmap Initiative. Additional goals currently in place include powering all of Oracle’s global datacenters and operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025, engaging with our key suppliers to encourage them to improve their sustainability performance, reducing waste generation in our facilities, and minimizing potable water usage.

While Elena has effectively influenced our goal setting as an organization, she also founded the Green Team program to engage employees on sustainability. These groups lead volunteer projects and initiatives centered around sustainability. Under Elena’s thoughtful leadership, the program now has over 45 teams globally.  Many of the green team members are recognized as Oracle’s Sustainability Champions.

Elena also works closely with Oracle’s Government Affairs team on sustainability-related policy issues in the United Kingdom and European Union to manage evolving regulatory requirements and guidelines in the region.

These days, Elena is engaging with customers and partners to share best practices and understand the challenges faced by business leaders in making progress on their sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) ambitions. Her experience as a sustainability practitioner combined with her background in product management uniquely enables her to drive further enhancements in the ability of Oracle’s solutions to help operationalize sustainable thinking and embed ESG considerations in decision making.
