OpenSolaris 2010.03 Community Translations - Top Contributors & Awards

Recently, we finished with translation activities for the incoming release of OpenSolaris (OS2010.03). The translation was done via Community Translation Tools - CTI and new OpenCTI. I am pleased to announce top contributors and the most active l10n groups for this release. The list is available at the i18n/l10n Top Contrib page. Congrats to all who helped with this work.

As an appreciation, we created several presents for community. The design of the gifts was created by our group - so this is about non-professional but! original design. I hope you will like it.

One Locale per Language in OpenSolaris LiveCD

One Locale per Language approach is one of the changes expected in the incoming release of OpenSolaris (OS 2010.03). This change is driven primarily by reducing the content delivered into LiveCD, so OpenSolaris can fit into CD space. Our goal was to reduce the stuff required by global users without any significant impact to such users.

There are 2 significant changes connected with this project:

  • Reducing the number of locales delivered with LiveCD
  • Reducing the number of languages for desktop (JDS)

PCT and OpenSolaris

What is PCT?

PCT means - Pre Consolidation Testing. We are using PCT for testing our patches and fixed packages before integration. We are able to find many bugs and fix them before official integration. It's also very good way for our engineers how to test their patches and packages.

Re-starting with Team Meetings & SCRUM

After having a short pause caused by a team reduction, we re-started our team meetings again. The major difference is that we have changed a meeting format from every week 2 hours long team meetings to a SCRUM methodology approach.

Solaris G11n EMEA Team SPRINT backlog Solaris G11n EMEA Team

There are a lot of articles about SCRUM, so I'm not going to describe this methodology in detail again. Anyone interested in such methodology can find a lot of articles and books on Internet. I also put some of my learning resources at the end of this article.

What I'm going to write here is what I expect from this change and what is a practical impact to the team.

Start with OpenSolaris Translation in a Minute!

Have you thought about translation of OpenSolaris project? So you are at the right pages. And moreover: a translation process has never been easier than now.

There are a lot of ways how to translate any piece of code or online help for OpenSolaris. However I recommend to use CTI tool (Community Translation Interface) developed by G11n Engineering team in Prague. With this tool, the translation process is very easy and fast. In addition to that you can focus only to the content you are going to translate and you do not have to deal with different file formats, different message workspaces and different rules required for integration to a product.[Read More]

Acrobat Reader for OpenSolaris Released

Today, March 25, 2009 Adobe has announced an availability of Adobe Reader 9.1 for OpenSolaris (or Solaris) on x86 platform. After several months when a plan for releasing Adobe Reader for (Open)Solaris x86 was revealed at Adobe blog and different forums, wishes become reality and you can freely download the reader from their sites.

I personally downloaded and installed .pkg.bz2 version in English on my OpenSolaris box (b109) and it worked as expected. Perfect! And note that Reader is available for different languages for example Japanese, French or German.
