Locale Creator on OpenSolaris
By Radoslav Glinsky on Sep 10, 2009
In OpenSolaris operating system there are some default locales configured (that means language, currency, date and time formats, names of months and days, number formats – decimal or thousands separator, …). However, default locales cannot be customized, meaning user is not able to change them according to his/her needs. Locale Creator program will enable right this – customizing current system locales or creating new ones, user would define own "locale data". From these newly defined locale data Locale Creator creates installable package. The package can be installed on the system using pkg tools, distributed among users, sent to IPS repositories, … User can choose newly installed locale in login dialog and adequately use in the system.
To sum up, Locale Creator program enables a user to create and customize his own OpenSolaris locale without requiring a high level of technical knowledge. The output of localectr is an installable package containing number of binaries and other supporting files with the locale data information. After the installation of the new package fully working locale is created on the OpenSolaris system.
