History of NetBeans goes back to the year 1996, developed as an academic project by the students of Prague University. Sun Microsystems sponsored the project www.netbeans.org in year 2000. Rich NetBeans Platform was born in 2001. The Platform comprises of extensive Packages and APIs, extendedable to rapidly build Rich Client applications. In 2006 NetBeans 5.0 was launched with comprehensive Module development support. NetBeans 6.x witnessed enhancements in Platform development e.g. Swing GUI builder (Matisse) among many other new features.
