Virtualization: Scary Times Two

Last week I mentioned how Apple and Microsoft were in danger of missing the Virtualization Cluetrain.  Well the heat seems to be turning up on Microsoft now.  There is a lot more activity coming out of this story now.  First, VMware is using this as an opportunity to launch an offensive.  They've long feared that Microsoft's Virtual Server will take a bite out of their ESX cash cow.  However, with the recent Vista licensing changes VMware is starting to use language that sounds like it's prepping for an anti-trust case (although they say they're not).  It'll be very interesting to see where this all leads.  This article at the New York Times has more.  ITWorld is also covering the story.

On a related note: Beta News is carring a story that says Microsoft came close to banning virtualization all together for fear it could lead to new security exploits.

Again, Microsoft finds themselves in tough innovator's dilemma territory.  It'll be interesting to see their next move.
