Internet Connected Storage

Well, I made it to New Zealand.  I arrived in Auckland early this morning and I'm now awaiting my connection to Queenstown where I'll be spending the next couple of days.  While here in the airport, I got a message from Kier Gombart who runs SysNet operations.  He told me that we'd received the first "phone home" event from our new connected storage.

While the StorageTek line has long had connected service, not all of Sun's storage devices offered this option.  We recently rolled out a new service that fills in the gaps so that all of Sun's storage offerings are connectable.  This morning a StorEdge array at a customer site in San Diego phoned home to tell us it had lost redundancy due to a failure (it's still operating, BTW).  It automatically generated a support case so we can get the parts replaced for the customer as quickly as possible.  The customer never had to pick up the phone and notify Sun of the failure.

Pretty cool, eh?
