Connected Management for Workgroups

Last week I wrote about the Sun Update Connection System. This week I want to take a few minutes and introduce the Sun Update Connection Hosted. While System is intended for single servers or workstations, Hosted is intended for workgroup and lab environments ranging from a handful to several dozen servers.

Hosted automates the patching of collections of servers, but is really simple to use and get started. You don't need a dedicated local server to run the tools. All the logic is hosted for you back at Sun. Check out updates.sun.com to learn more. And, the really cool part is that it's free with your Solaris Service Plan.

Here are a couple of screen shots to give you some flavor for the application.

Like System, Hosted recently had a substantial update (the new version is 1.0.9), so even if you checked it out before it's worth a fresh look.

Tip of the Day
If you're going to register to manage a bunch of headless servers with Update Connection Hosted you don't need to log into each one and use the GUI registration screen. You can register them all at the command line.
