Advanced Provisioning with Update Connection

It's three days and counting until I leave for Israel to meet with the Update Connection Enterprise team. Yesterday I wrote about the advanced patch management capabilities of UCE. However, there are a lot of things beyond just patch management that this software can do.

The software allows administrators to define a profile for a machine type. The profile specifies exactly what packages (or RPMs or tarballs or other software bits) are required for a given class of machine. These packages can go beyond just OS components and can include application components like Web Servers or Databases. UCE can then automatically provision them. Then, if you update a machine with a new version of these (say a new WebServer) you can update that version to be the new master for the profile and make all similar machines match it (say rolloing out to the rest of your web farm). This is all much easier to set up than with most so-called IT automation tools.

BTW, if the term provisioning is new or confusing to you then there's a decent definition over at Wikipedia. Note that the version of the term I'm using is specifically called Server Provisioning on that page.
