WebCenter 11.1.1.8 Certified with E-Business Suite 12.2

Oracle WebCenter Suite is an integrated suite of Fusion Middleware 11gR1 tools used to create web sites and portals using service-oriented architecture (SOA).  Applications adapters are also available.

WebCenter Development Framework

WebCenter Portal 11.1.1.8 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.  This complements our existing certifications of WebCenter Portal 11.1.1.8 with EBS 12.0 and 12.1WebCenter Portal 11.1.1.8 is part of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 Version 11.1.1.8.0, also known as FMW 11gR1 Patchset 7.

Certified Platforms

Oracle WebCenter Portal is certified to run on any operating system for which Oracle WebLogic Server 11g is certified. For information on operating systems supported by Oracle WebLogic Server 11g and Oracle WebCenter Portal, refer to the 'Oracle Fusion Middleware on WebLogic Server - System Certification' in the Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.x) Certification Matrix.

Integration with Oracle WebCenter Portal involves components spanning several different suites of Oracle products. There are no restrictions on which platform any particular component may be installed so long as the platform is supported for that component.

Migrating to Oracle WebCenter

If you're currently using Oracle Portal, you should be aware that Portal is now in maintenance mode.  Updates with bug fixes will continue to be produced, but you should consider migrating to Oracle WebCenter for ongoing new features.

Premier Support ends December 2011 for Discoverer 10g, Portal 10g, Single Sign-On 10g, and others

All Oracle E-Business Suite system administrators should check the Lifetime Support dates for their technology stack components regularly.  If you need a primer on how support policies for Fusion Middleware and Server Technologies components interact with E-Business Suite support dates, see:

Table showing Fusion Middleware support timelines

December 2011 is a critical threshold for several products used by Oracle E-Business Suite customers.  Premier Support ends on December 31st, 2011 for:

  1. Discoverer 10g
  2. Portal 10g
  3. Oracle Internet Directory 10g
  4. Single Sign-On 10g
  5. BPEL 10g
  6. Business Activity Monitoring 10g
  7. Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 10.1.3.x
  8. WebCenter Suite 10.1.3.x
  9. Oracle Identity Manager 9.0.x

Extended Support is not available for many these products -- check the Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle Fusion Middleware (PDF) for details.  All customers using these products should upgrade to the 11g equivalents as soon as possible.

E-Business Suite 11i users running Oracle Single Sign-On 10g users should upgrade to Oracle Access Manager 10g.  Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 users running Oracle Single Sign-On should upgrade to Oracle Access Manager 11g.

Creating Custom WSRP Portlets with EBS R12 Portlet Generator

Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 comes with a small number of prebuilt portlets that can be used with Oracle WebCenter and Oracle Portal:  Applications Navigator, Favorites, and Worklist.  These portlets are JSR-168 and WSRP-compliant and can be used with third-party web development tools.

While those portlets do what you'd expect, you might need more options for embedding EBS functionality into your custom corporate websites.  That's possible -- you can create your own custom portlets using the EBS R12 Portlet Generator.

Conceptual diagram showing OAF Portlet Generator flow

The Portlet Generator lets you convert existing standalone Oracle Application Framework regions into portlets.  These converted portlets can be integrated into any JSR-168/WSRP-compatible portal.

As you might expect, there are very specific conditions in which you can extract OA Framework regions into standalone portlets.  For more information about prerequisites and tips on using the Portlet Generator, see the Developer Tools section (Chapter 16) in the following guide:

Have you used this tool?

This is a relatively new tool, and our development team is very interested in hearing about your experiences with it.  If you have any feedback or suggestions, please post a comment here or drop me a private email with your thoughts.

[Oct 19 2009 Update: If you registered for OpenWorld, here's a link to the OpenWorld On Demand page where you can download or listen to the live recording of this session as well as the presentation materials.]

Every year I provide an OpenWorld update on the various ways that E-Business Suite users can use different Oracle Application Server 10g components.  This presentation covers many of the topics that I visit regularly on this blog, neatly summarizing them in a single package with the latest Fusion Middleware certified versions (and desupport notices) in one place:

    • Oracle Access Manager and Oracle Identity Manager
    • Web Center and Portal
    • Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition and Discoverer
    • Web Cache
    • Oracle SOA Suite

WebCenter 10g 10.1.3.3 Certified with E-Business Suite Release 12

My colleagues over at the Fusion Middleware Best Practices Center recently posted a Developer Preview of an Oracle By Example tutorial for using WebCenter 10g with the E-Business Suite; this was a subset of our unpublished official documentation.  The preview period is over at last:  I'm pleased to announce that WebCenter 10g 10.1.3.3 is now officially certified and supported for use with E-Business Suite Release 12.

Integrating Standalone Websites With Apps 12

Oracle WebCenter is a suite of development tools that can be used to build web-based applications using the latest technologies such as SOA, JSR-168, and WSRP.  The Oracle WebCenter Framework allows you integrate the following E-Business Suite Release 12 portlets into a custom web-based application:
  • Applications Navigator (menu of E-Business Suite functions)
  • Applications Worklist (showing Workflow notifications)
  • Applications Favorites (for bookmarking specific Apps functions)
JDev Portlets: Screenshot of Oracle JDeveloper IDE page showing list of E-Business Suite Release 12 WSRP portlets

What's Notable About This Certification?

This certification is a bit of a departure from our usual technology stack certifications for the E-Business Suite.  Our typical certification involves, say, upgrading your E-Business Suite environment to the latest new database, or integrating it with an external component like Single Sign-On.

This new certification documents a step-by-step process for building and deploying a WebCenter application using the Oracle Applications Framework WSRP producer.  You can build an Applications Development Framework (ADF) application in the Oracle JDeveloper integrated development environment and deploy the application to your end-users via Oracle WebCenter.

Our newly-documented procedure supports E-Business Suite environments that have been integrated with Oracle Single Sign-On (SSO), as well as steps for E-Business Suite configuration and the migration of Oracle Internet Directory (OID) policies.  It also includes detailed steps for deploying the ADF application to a WebCenter OC4J instance and running the application there.
