E-Business Suite 12 Now Available on Linux on IBM System z

logo_ibm.jpg
Every new E-Business Suite release, patch, roll-up patchset, Family Pack, Consolidated Update, or technology stack certification needs to be tested on every platform that we support for the E-Business Suite.  This is a lot of work.  My teams test on the base Oracle Enterprise Linux platform, and Terri Noyes' Applications Platforms Group tests everything on all of the other operating systems that we support.

As you can imagine, it is very big news when we expand our E-Business Suite operating system portfolio to include a new platform.  This always constitutes a major new commitment to that platform.

This is why we are pleased to announce that the Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 is now available on a new fully certified EBS platform - Linux on IBM System z. This IBM platform (i.e. Linux running on an IBM mainframe) is also known as 'Linux on System z' and appears in our Oracle systems (My Oracle Support, aru, bug, etc.) as 'IBM: Linux on System z'.

The Linux on System z platform was previously a 'database tier only' platform (for EBS 11i and 12.0) and will continue to be supported as such on those releases. With this announcement for 12.1, we are supporting the platform as a fully certified EBS platform (i.e. for both application and database tiers).

The release is based on the 12.1.2 EBS codeline and includes a Rapid Install wizard to support new installations as well as 11i upgrades (from a certified EBS 11i platform) to Release 12 on Linux on System z. This first release includes the Oracle Database 10gR2 on the database tier, and Application Server versions 10gR2 and 10gR3.

Various technology certifications are planned as well for the currently available versions of technology products on the platform (such as 10.1.2.3 OID/SSO, 10.1.2.3 Discoverer, AS 10gR3 Patchset 5, etc.) or those expected at some point in the future (such as Oracle Database 11gR2). Separate announcements for these certifications will be sent out as they become available.

The operating systems certified with EBS on this platform are:
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 5 (64-bit)
  • Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) version 9 (64-bit)
  • Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) version 10 (64-bit)
Please review the documents below for all requirements and additional details on the use of EBS Release 12 on IBM: Linux on System z. All general documentation pertaining to EBS Release 12.1.1 (such as the Rapid Install Guide and the Upgrade Guide) are relevant as well to this release of 12.1.2 as the general functionality of EBS is the same on this platform.

The release is available now on our public edelivery web site for download.

Thirteen New E-Business 12.1.1 Database-Tier Only Certifications for 10gR2

Our Applications Platforms Group has just released a flurry of new platform certifications for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 for the 10gR2 10.2.0.4 Database Server.  The following operating systems are now certified for database-tier only deployments:
  • Sun Solaris x86-64 (Solaris 10)
  • IBM: Linux on System z (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)

  • Linux Itanium (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
These database-tier only platforms were previously certified with E-Business Suite 12.0 and 10gR2.  Customers running those combinations can now apply the 12.1.1 Maintenance Pack to upgrade their application tier to EBS 12.1.1 while running the 10gR2 database on one of the above platforms.

This is a database-tier only certification (previously known as a 'split configuration database tier' certification), where the application tier must be on a fully certified E-Business Suite R12 platform.

Still Underway

The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 with Windows 2003 (x64) and Windows Itanium as database tier-only platforms is still underway.  I don't have firm schedules for this certification yet, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

10gR2 10.2.0.4 DB Certified with EBS 12 for Four New Database-Tier Only Platforms

Working through my announcement backlog after almost three weeks away, here's a four-pronged certification announcement for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.0.4.  EBS 12.0.4 is now certified with Oracle Database Server 10gR2 10.2.0.4 on the following "database-tier only" platforms:

  • Sun Solaris x86-64 (Solaris 10)
  • IBM Linux on System z (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
  • IBM Linux on Power (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
  • Linux Itanium (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)

Notable here are the Sun Solaris x86-64 and IBM Linux on Power certifications.  These were previously certified only with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i, but are now new additions to the list of available Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 "database-tier only" platforms.

Prerequisites

You can review the system requirements from the relevant Oracle Database 10gR2 documentation (Installation Guide, Release Notes, Upgrade Guide) prior to installing the database on these platforms.

These are database-tier only certifications (previously known as "split configurations" in Apps 11i).  The application tier must be on a fully-certified Oracle E-Business Suite R12 platform.

Mixed Platform Architectures for Release 12

Editor Mar 15 Update:  There are a number of mixed platform architectures that are supported for Release 12 today, although certification of additional platforms is still pending.  More details added below.

Editor Update:  It turns out that our official nomenclature for these types of configurations has evolved between releases.  In Release 11i, these were called "split configurations."  In Release 12, these are now called "mixed platform architectures."

Here's a quick update for those of you who might be interested in "mixed platform architectures," where the E-Business Suite's database and application servers are deployed on different operating system platforms.

Itanium Chip:

R12 Fully Certified Platforms

As of March 15, 2007, the following are the fully certified platforms (application and database tiers) for the E-Business Suite Release 12. See Oracle Certify for exact versions and platforms certified with E-Business Suite:
  • HP-UX Itanium
  • HP-UX PA-RISC
  • IBM AIX
  • Linux x86 and x86-64 (32-bit OS)
  • Linux x86-64 (64-bit OS)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  • Sun Solaris Operating System (SPARC)
These platforms can be mixed together, i.e. the database tier can use any one of these platforms, and the application tier can use any one of these platforms.  So, this would be a certified combination:  database tier on HP-UX Itanium, and application tier on Linux x86-64 (32-bit OS).

Not Certified Yet... For Use on the Database Tier Only

Certifications for the following additional platforms are underway for the database tier only:
  • IBM System z Linux
  • Linux Itanium
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Itanium
In other words, you can't use any of these four operating system platforms for your database tier yet, but these certifications are forthcoming.  When they're certified, you'll be able to deploy any of these four platforms on your database tier only.  At that time, you will be able to mix any of these four database tiers with application tiers running on any of the existing fully certified platforms in the first list.

The certifications of the four database tier only platforms are underway now, and are expected to be released in conjunction with the R12 certification for the 10.2.0.3 Database.  Firm schedules aren't available yet, but feel free to monitor or subscribe to this site for updates, which I'll post as soon as they're available.

Still Confused?

Don't worry -- you're not the only one.  As you can infer from the changes to this article, we've been working through the nomenclature around these mixed platform architectures ourselves.  If you're still struggling to get a handle on this, either log a Service Request or contact your Oracle account manager to get some help with your specific target platform architecture.
