Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 Certified with E-Business Suite 12.2

I'm very happy to announce the certification of Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2.

To begin planning your database upgrade to 11.2.0.4, you should review our documentation in this order:

  1. Interoperability Notes: Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (Note 1623879.1)

  2. R12.2 Consolidated List of Patches and Technology Bug Fixes (Note 1594274.1) .  The interoperability note references this note.  It is crucial that you review all requirements in Section 2.2, "Database 11.2.0.4 Patches and Bug Numbers" of this note.

  3. Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (Note 396009.1).  Make certain that you review Section 4, "Release-Specific Database Initialization Parameters For Oracle 11gR2" and Section 6, "Additional Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2".

What does this mean if you are upgrading to R12.2?

  • This upgrade is highly recommended for all EBS 12.2 environments.

  • If you are just beginning your upgrade to R12.2 project, you should consider upgrading to Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 now.

  • If your are currently in the midst of your R12.2 upgrade, you may continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 as your R12.2 upgrade project and test plans permit.

  • If your go-live date is soon, you may choose to continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 after you go-live with 12.2.

It may be useful to review the the Oracle Database 11gR2 support policies and dates as part of your decision-making process:

Release 4.0 has numerous major enhancements that provide the necessary intelligence to determine if the product has been installed and configured correctly. There are diagnostics for Discovery, Cloning, and User Monitoring that will validate if the appropriate patches, privileges, setups, and profile options have been configured. This feature improves the setup and configuration process.
    Enhanced ACMP Capabilities
    Customization Manager
    • Multi-Node Custom Application Registration: This feature automates the process of registering and validating custom products/applications on every node in a multi-node EBS system.
    • Public/Private File Source Mappings and E-Business Suite Mappings: File Source Mappings & E-Business Suite Mappings can be created and marked as public or private. Only the creator/owner can define/edit his/her own mappings. Users can use public Mappings, but cannot edit or change settings.
    • Test Checkout Command for Versions: This feature allows you to test/verify checkout commands at the version level within the File Source Mapping page.
    • Prerequisite Patch Validation: You can specify prerequisite patches for Customization packages and for Release 12 Oracle E-Business Suite packages.
    • Destination Path Population: You can now automatically populate the Destination Path for common file types during package construction.
    • OAF File Type Support: Ability to package Oracle Application Framework (OAF) customizations and deploy them across multiple Oracle E-Business Suite instances.
    • Extended PLL Support: Ability to distinguish between different types of PLLs (that is, Report and Forms PLL files). Providing better granularity when managing PLL objects.
    • Enhanced Standards Checker: Provides greater and more comprehensive list of coding standards that are verified during the package build process (for example, File Driver exceptions, Java checks, XML checks, SQL checks, etc.)
    • HTML Package Readme: The package Readme is in HTML format and includes the file listing.
    • Advanced Package Search Capabilities: The ability to utilize more criteria within the advanced search package (that is, Public, Last Updated by, Files Source Mapping, and E-Business Suite Mapping).
    • Enhanced Package Build Notifications: More detailed information on the results of a package build process. Better, more detailed troubleshooting guidance in the event of build failures.
    Patch Manager
    • Staged Patches: Ability to run Patch Manager with no external internet access. Customer can download Oracle E-Business Suite patches into a shared location for Patch Manager to access and apply. Supports highly secured production environments that prohibit external internet connections.
    • Support for Superseded Patches: Automatic check for superseded patches. Allows users to easily add superseded patches into the Patch Run. More comprehensive and correct Patch Runs. Removes many manual and laborious tasks, frees up Apps DBAs for higher value-added tasks.
    • Automatic Primary Node Identification: Users can now specify which is the "primary node" (that is, which node hosts the Shared APPL_TOP) during the Patch Run interview process, available for Release 12 only.
    Setup Manager
    • Preview Extract Results: Ability to execute an extract in "proof mode", and examine the query results, to determine accuracy. Used in conjunction with the "where" clause in Advanced Filtering. This feature can provide better and more accurate fine tuning of extracts.
    • Use Uploaded Extracts in New Projects: Ability to incorporate uploaded extracts in new projects via new LOV fields in package construction. Leverages the Setup Manager repository to access extracts that have been uploaded. Allows customer to reuse uploaded extracts to provision new instances.
    • Re-use Existing Extracts in New Projects: Ability to incorporate existing extracts in new projects via new LOV fields in package construction. Leverages the Setup Manager repository to access point-in-time extracts (snapshots) of configuration data. Allows customer to reuse existing extracts to provision new instances. Allows comparative historical reporting of identical APIs, executed at different times.
    • Support for BR100 formats: Setup Manager can now automatically produce reports in the BR100 format. Native support for industry standard formats.
    • Concurrent Manager API Support: General Foundation now provides an API for management of "Concurrent Manager" configuration data. Ability to migrate Concurrent Managers from one instance to another. Complete the setup once and never again; no need to redefine the Concurrent Managers.

Upgrades from AMP & ACMP 3

This plug-in supersedes the Oracle Application Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite 3.1. An upgrade path to 4.0 is provided from 3.1 only. Therefore it is mandatory for the existing installations to be at the Application Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite 3.1 level before upgrading to 4.0.

AMP & ACMP 4.0 run only with EM 11g, and vice versa

If you're running AMP or ACMP 3.1 on EM 10gR5 and upgrade to AMP/ACMP 4.0, you must upgrade to EM 11g.

If you're running AMP or ACMP 3.1 on EM 10gR5 and upgrade to EM 11g, you must upgrade to AMP or ACMP 4.0.

    11gR2 11.2.0.2 Database Certified with E-Business Suite

[Jan 20, 2011 Update: Removed erroneous Linux x86-64 SLES 9 database tier reference]

[Nov 18, 2010 Update: Added HP-UX Itanium to the EBS 11i list of pending certifications]

We certified the 11gR2 11.2.0.1 Database with E-Business Suite 11i and EBS 12 late in 2009.  It's taken a little longer than we had hoped to certify 11.2.0.2, the first patchset for the 11gR2 Database.  The reasons: the release cycle for 11.2.0.2 overlapped with our EBS 12.1.3 release cycle, and some of the ports for this patchset weren't released until just before Halloween.  Our Server Technologies team is as-yet working on other ports, too.

I know that some of you have been eager to apply this latest patchset to your E-Business Suite databases, so I'm very pleased to announce that Oracle Database 11gR2 Patchset 1 Version 11.2.0.2 is now certified with the E-Business Suite.

The Scoop: Oracle E-Business Suite Support on 64-bit Linux

    Linux tux-large.jpg
This article addresses frequently asked questions about Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) 64-bit Linux support.

Q:  Which 64-bit Linux OSs are supported for EBS?

A: Beginning with Release 12, we support the following 64-bit operating systems for both application and database tiers on x86-64 servers:

    • Oracle Enterprise Linux
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
For EBS Release 11i (and again in Release 12), when the application tier is installed on a certified platform, additional platforms (including the above) may be used for a 64-bit database tier on x86-64 servers. This is an example of a mixed platform architecture (Release 12), or a Split Configuration (Release 11i).

Q:  I understand that the EBS application tier code is 32-bit, even for the 64-bit Linux OS -- is this the case?
A: It is true that the majority of executables provided as part of our release media on the application tier are 32-bit (as are the Fusion Middleware libraries and objects they depend on).  However, the 'Planning' products have large memory requirements and therefore are 64-bit compiled to take advantage of the larger memory space afforded by the 64-bit OS'es.

Q:  How do I install EBS on 64-bit Linux?
A:  For new installations of EBS Release 12 on supported 64-bit Linux operating systems, you can use Rapid Install as directed in "Oracle Applications Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install" to install the database and application tiers.

For Database Tier Only platforms in a mixed platform architecture, you can use Rapid Install as directed in "Oracle Applications Installation Guide: Using Rapid Install" to install the database and application tiers on supported platforms, and then migrate the database tier to a certified 64-bit operating system.

Q:  How do I migrate EBS Release 12 from 32-bit Linux to 64-bit Linux?

A:  Please refer to Migrating Oracle E-Business Suite R12 from Linux 32-bit to Linux 64-bit (Note 471566.1) for instructions on how to migrate EBS from 32-bit to 64-bit Linux.

Q:  How do I migrate an existing EBS database to 64-bit Linux?

A:  To migrate an EBS database to a certified 64-bit Linux operating system on x86-64, refer to one of the following documents:

    For EBS Release 11i:

    For EBS Release 12:
Q:  How do I migrate EBS Release 12 on a non-Linux platform to 64-bit Linux?
A:  There is no documentation that covers the direct migration from a Windows or UNIX application tier directly to 64-bit Linux.  However, the document Application Tier Platform Migration with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (Note 438086.1) contains instructions for migrating to 32-bit Linux, and Migrating Oracle E-Business Suite R12 from Linux 32-bit to Linux 64-bit (Note 471566.1) contains the additional steps to configure your environment for 64-bit Linux.  Pondering this question just now gave me the idea to write a new white paper, which will presumably eliminate several steps from either document and insure a smooth migration process.  Stay tuned to this space for more information on this upcoming paper.

Q:  How do I patch EBS on Linux 64-bit?

A: The EBS 32-bit Linux application tier patches are applicable for 64-bit Linux OSes as well.  From the Oracle support portal, you can do a search by patch number to bring up the 32-bit patch.  Note that if you click on the informational icon to the left of the Platform pulldown menu for this patch, it brings up a page stating:

For Oracle Applications Release 12 on Linux x86-64, queries will return a Linux x86 patch. This patch may be applied to both 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.

Q:  What are the benefits of running EBS Release 12 on 64-bit Linux?

A: Theoretically, 64 bit architectures allow for "2 to the 64th power" bytes or 16 exabytes of RAM, and while individual operating systems and hardware architectures impose constraints (for instance, the maximum RAM is 1 terabyte on x86-64), you are unlikely to hit this memory limit with today's applications.

For 32-bit compiled code, even though the process address space is limited to approximately 3 GB (even on the 64-bit OS), with overall addressable space up to 1 terabyte you'll be able to run many more processes.  This is an excellent model all around for larger customers wanting to consolidate their hardware or scale up.

Q:  Can we (or why can't we) run EBS Release 11i on 64-bit Linux?

A:   We support the use of 64-bit Linux OS'es in the EBS database tier in a 'split configuration' or 'database tier only' configuration for 11i, wherein the application tier can be on any certified EBS platform and the database tier can run additional database certified platforms (like 64-bit Linux).  Customers wanting headroom for the RAM-intensive DB processes can run their database tier on Linux 64-bit (in a split tier configuration), and if needed spread the application tiers (CM, Forms, Web) across multiple middle tier machines to distribute the load amongst the 32-bit OS'es.

As to why we do not support EBS Release 11i on 64-bit Linux, there are several reasons:  a)  it doesn't "just run";  b) there is no third party support; c) given the costs, we chose to chose to focus our resources on EBS Release 12 and beyond.  Let me explain.

Contrary to what you might think, you cannot necessarily run 32-bit code on 64-bit Linux without a bit of tweaking.  On the technical front, you would need to install the 32-bit OS libraries and deal with potential conflicts between 32-bit and 64-bit OS packages, including file overwrites.  Note that when we introduced 64-bit OS support in EBS Release 12 we made changes to all of the product makefiles, carefully analyzed and laid out both the 32-bit and 64-bit package dependencies, modified installation, configuration and cloning software for OS recognition and proper file locations, and conducted extensive testing.  Each new release requires this process to be repeated, and each new release package requires an independent packaging effort.

In addition, for 64-bit Linux support we've established a 64-bit infrastructure across Oracle teams (in support, engineering, release, QA and certification teams).  This infrastructure investment was made for EBS Release 12 and higher.

Also note that EBS Release 11i has an aging technology infrastructure, and neither Oracle nor third party tool versions used in EBS Release 11i are explicitly supported on the 64-bit operating system in 32-bit mode.

Call us old-fashioned if you will, but given these limitations, because of our support commitment to you and what's behind that commitment we will only support EBS Release 12 forward on 64-bit Linux.
