EBS R12 Pre-Install RPM Available for Oracle Linux 5 and 6

Tux logoThe Linux Pre-Install RPM for Oracle E-Business Suite R12 on Oracle Linux 5 and 6 is now available for use by customers.

The package (oracle-ebs-server-R12-preinstall) is available on the 'addons' channel on Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN, which requires a support contract) or from the Oracle public yum repository. It is recommended that this Pre-Install RPM be installed on top of a 'minimal' installation of Linux to provide just the necessary packages to install and run Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.

As with the Oracle Database Pre-Install RPMs, this RPM provides all required E-Business Suite packages for both the application and database tiers, while configuring the systems with particular kernel and other values to meet requirements published in our Linux x86-64 Installation and Upgrade Notes (IUNs).

This Pre-Install RPM will significantly reduce the preparation time of an environment prior to installing, upgrading or cloning an E-Business Suite R12 instance by performing the following tasks:

    • downloading and installing all software package versions and dependencies required for installing E-Business Suite R12 (12.1, 12.2)
    • creating the users oracle and applmgr for use as owners of the database and application tiers respectively, while setting hard and soft shell resource limits
    • updating kernel parameters in /etc/sysctl.conf to recommended values
    • sets DNS resolver parameters in /etc/resolv.conf to minimum recommended values
    • sets 'numa=off' in the kernel commandline
    • disables 'Transparent Huge Pages (THP)' for Oracle Linux 6 if enabled

For more information and details, please review the 'E-Business Suite Pre-Install RPM' section in the following documents:

Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 Certified with E-Business Suite 12.2

I'm very happy to announce the certification of Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2.

To begin planning your database upgrade to 11.2.0.4, you should review our documentation in this order:

    1. Interoperability Notes: Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (Note 1623879.1)

    2. R12.2 Consolidated List of Patches and Technology Bug Fixes (Note 1594274.1) .  The interoperability note references this note.  It is crucial that you review all requirements in Section 2.2, "Database 11.2.0.4 Patches and Bug Numbers" of this note.

    3. Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (Note 396009.1).  Make certain that you review Section 4, "Release-Specific Database Initialization Parameters For Oracle 11gR2" and Section 6, "Additional Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2".

What does this mean if you are upgrading to R12.2?

    • This upgrade is highly recommended for all EBS 12.2 environments.

    • If you are just beginning your upgrade to R12.2 project, you should consider upgrading to Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 now.

    • If your are currently in the midst of your R12.2 upgrade, you may continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 as your R12.2 upgrade project and test plans permit.

    • If your go-live date is soon, you may choose to continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 after you go-live with 12.2.

It may be useful to review the the Oracle Database 11gR2 support policies and dates as part of your decision-making process:

New Whitepaper: Oracle E-Business Suite on Exadata

[Dec. 30, 2010 Update: Added link to Note 1133355.1]

Our Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) team has quietly been amassing a formidable set of whitepapers about the Oracle Exadata Database Machine.  They're available here:
If you're one of the lucky ones with access to this hardware platform, you'll be pleased to hear that the MAA team has just published a new whitepaper with best practices for EBS environments:
      exadata_v2_feature_main.png
This whitepaper covers the following topics:
      • Getting to Exadata -- a high level overview of fresh installation on, and migration to, Exadata Database Machine with pointers to more detailed documentation
      • High Availability and Disaster Recovery -- an overview of our MAA best practices with pointers to our detailed MAA Best Practices documentation
      • Performance and Scalability -- best practices for running Oracle E-Business Suite on Exadata Database Machine based on our internal testing
As an added bonus, the whitepaper has details about the internal testbeds where this configuration was evaluated with Oracle's own 18 TB Global Single Instance.  The whitepaper's Appendix discusses Exada Smart Flash Cache results, Smart Scan, RAC, and RMAN backup performance.

Need an Overview of Migration Options?

Also useful:  A summary of the different technologies and techniques that you can use to migrate your E-Business Suite database to Exadata can be found here:
That overview Note provides a short but precise analysis of physical migration techniques (e.g. Data Guard Physical Standby, Transportable Database, Transportable Tablespaces, Rapid Clone) vs. logical migration techniques (e.g. Oracle Data Pump).

Running Oracle E-Business Suite on Exalogic Elastic Cloud

[Dec. 10, 2010 update:  Clarified EBS R12-only compatibility with Exalogic. Exalogic does not offer 32-bit OS support. Since Release 11i runs on 32-bit Linux only, it cannot be deployed on Exalogic.]

We unveiled the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud at OpenWorld 2010.  Oracle Exalogic is an engineered system comprising both hardware and software components, providing an application tier server complement for the Oracle Exadata Database Machine.

exalogic architecture diagram with picture of Exalogic server tower exalogic_architecture.png
Since then, we've been receiving a steady series of questions about the feasibility of running Oracle E-Business Suite on Exalogic servers.  Our position on Exalogic application compatibility is straightforward and the same as for Exadata: Exalogic is 100% compatible with all standard Oracle Linux 5 and Solaris 11 applications. No special certification for Exalogic is required - all Oracle applications that are certified for the appropriate releases of Oracle Linux and Solaris are supported on Exalogic.

      E-Business Suite runs on Exalogic

Oracle E-Business Suite releases that are certified on 64-bit Oracle Linux 5.x (which includes several versions of R12, 12.1) are supported on Exalogic.  Exalogic does not offer 32-bit OS support, and since Release 11i runs on 32-bit Linux only, it cannot be deployed on Exalogic.

We are finding that many customers are interested in consolidating existing Oracle software into an Exalogic environment.  For the E-Business Suite, keep in mind that existing versions of EBS would be installed as a full stack (including Oracle Application Server 10g), just as they are today on any other 64-bit Oracle Linux 5 (on x86-64) machine.  However, older Oracle Application Server releases are not optimized for the Exalogic environment and therefore will not be able to take advantage of some of the performance benefits of the system in the same manner as applications running on the Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g stack.

E-Business Suite environments running on Exalogic derive other benefits of the updated kernel, including bug fixes, enhanced security, and data integrity features.  For more information about the updated kernal, see:

EBS R12 Sparse Mid-Tier Template for Oracle VM Now Available

Yes, it's true: the title is not a typo. We have an Oracle VM (OVM) template that works against any E-Business Suite Release 12 version.  It works against your current E-Business Suite Release 12 installs, whether physical or virtual.

Instructions for downloading these new templates are here:

Screenshot of edelivery page for sparse Oracle VM downloads for ebs R12 application tier images sparseOVM.jpg
We listened to you: you wanted a small OVM template, and this one is small at around ~600MB.

      How does this work?

On first boot, OracleVM machines based on this template will prompt for an exported Linux EBS shared file system location. They will mount it and create an Apps middle tier node which you can use to scale up your existing EBS instance or to start a new instance.

If you have development or testbed environments where you can re-use the database, this template is an easy way to create new Linux middle tiers.

      Your Feedback is Welcome

We're extremely interested in hearing about your use cases and your experiences with our new templates and virtualization kit.  Tell us what you think via our new OVM Templates discussion forum.

      11gR2 11.2.0.2 Database Certified with E-Business Suite

[Jan 20, 2011 Update: Removed erroneous Linux x86-64 SLES 9 database tier reference]

[Nov 18, 2010 Update: Added HP-UX Itanium to the EBS 11i list of pending certifications]

We certified the 11gR2 11.2.0.1 Database with E-Business Suite 11i and EBS 12 late in 2009.  It's taken a little longer than we had hoped to certify 11.2.0.2, the first patchset for the 11gR2 Database.  The reasons: the release cycle for 11.2.0.2 overlapped with our EBS 12.1.3 release cycle, and some of the ports for this patchset weren't released until just before Halloween.  Our Server Technologies team is as-yet working on other ports, too.

I know that some of you have been eager to apply this latest patchset to your E-Business Suite databases, so I'm very pleased to announce that Oracle Database 11gR2 Patchset 1 Version 11.2.0.2 is now certified with the E-Business Suite.

E-Business Suite 12.1.3 Templates for Oracle VM Now Available

I am pleased to announce that you can use pre-built Oracle VM templates to create a fully operational Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 environment now.  Instructions for downloading these new templates are here:
      EBS-12.1.3-OVM-Templates.jpg
32-bit templates are available now and and 64-bit versions will be available soon.  We used Production (PROD) database files instead of the Vision Demonstration database to make the database template download smaller -- it is now three files instead of eight.

The Oracle VM template for Oracle E-business Suite 12.1.3 (64-bit and 32-bit) consists of two separate virtual machines:
