Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 Certified with E-Business Suite 12.2

I'm very happy to announce the certification of Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 with Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2.

To begin planning your database upgrade to 11.2.0.4, you should review our documentation in this order:

  1. Interoperability Notes: Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 with Oracle Database 11g Release 2 (Note 1623879.1)

  2. R12.2 Consolidated List of Patches and Technology Bug Fixes (Note 1594274.1) .  The interoperability note references this note.  It is crucial that you review all requirements in Section 2.2, "Database 11.2.0.4 Patches and Bug Numbers" of this note.

  3. Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 (Note 396009.1).  Make certain that you review Section 4, "Release-Specific Database Initialization Parameters For Oracle 11gR2" and Section 6, "Additional Database Initialization Parameters for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2".

What does this mean if you are upgrading to R12.2?

  • This upgrade is highly recommended for all EBS 12.2 environments.

  • If you are just beginning your upgrade to R12.2 project, you should consider upgrading to Oracle Database 11.2.0.4 now.

  • If your are currently in the midst of your R12.2 upgrade, you may continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 as your R12.2 upgrade project and test plans permit.

  • If your go-live date is soon, you may choose to continue as planned with Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 and upgrade to 11.2.0.4 after you go-live with 12.2.

It may be useful to review the the Oracle Database 11gR2 support policies and dates as part of your decision-making process:

Java (JDK) 7 Certified with E-Business Suite 12.2 Servers

Java logoOracle E-Business Suite 12.2 shipped with Java SE (JDK) 6 as part of its Rapid Install technology stack.

Java (JDK) 7 is now certified for EBS 12.2 application and database tier servers.  See:

You can apply the Java 7 update on all tier nodes:

  • Java 6.0 either Oracle JRockit (JRockit) or Java SE Development Kit (JDK), on the application tier
  • 32-bit or 64-bit Java 6 for use by Oracle WebLogic Server 11.1.1.6.0 only
  • Non-WebLogic middle tier nodes using 32-bit Java version 6.0 only
  • Java SE Development Kit (JDK) version 6.0 on the OracleAS 10g 10.1.2 application tier hosting Oracle Forms and Reports services
  • Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) version 6.0 on the database tier

End-users can use either JRE 6 or 7 on their Windows desktop clients to run Forms-based products in EBS 12.2.

Implications of Java 6 End of Public Updates for EBS Users

The Support Roadmap for Oracle Java is published here:

The latest updates to that page (as of Sept. 19, 2012) state:

Java SE 6 End of Public Updates Notice

After February 2013, Oracle will no longer post updates of Java SE 6 to its public download sites. Existing Java SE 6 downloads already posted as of February 2013 will remain accessible in the Java Archive on Oracle Technology Network. Developers and end-users are encouraged to update to more recent Java SE versions that remain available for public download. For enterprise customers, who need continued access to critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6 or older versions, long term support is available through Oracle Java SE Support .

What does this mean for Oracle E-Business Suite users?

EBS users fall under the category of "enterprise users" above.  Java is an integral part of the Oracle E-Business Suite technology stack, so EBS users will continue to receive Java SE 6 updates from February 2013 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.

In other words, nothing changed for EBS users after February 2013.

EBS users will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for Java SE 6. These Java SE 6 updates will be made available to EBS users for the Extended Support periods documented in the Oracle Lifetime Support policy document for Oracle Applications (PDF).

How can EBS customers obtain Java 6 updates after the public end-of-life?

EBS customers can download Java 6 patches from My Oracle Support.  For a complete list of all Java SE patch numbers, see:

Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS Servers?

No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but will be optional for EBS application tier servers running on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.  You can choose to remain on JDK 6 for the duration of your respective EBS Extended Support period.  If you remain on JDK 6, you will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6.

Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JRE 7 for Windows desktop clients?

No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but currently remains optional. JRE 6 desktop clients can connect to EBS 12.2 environments running JDK 7.

JRE 6 will be available to Windows users to run with EBS to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.  Updates will be delivered via My Oracle Support, where you can continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JRE 6 desktop clients.

Coexistence of JRE 6 and JRE 7 on Windows desktops

The upgrade to JRE 7 is highly recommended for EBS users, but some users may need to run both JRE 6 and 7 on their Windows desktops for reasons unrelated to the E-Business Suite.

Most EBS configurations with IE and Firefox use non-static versioning by default. JRE 7 will be invoked instead of JRE 6 if both are installed on a Windows desktop. For more details, see "Appendix B: Static vs. Non-static Versioning and Set Up Options" in Notes 290801.1 and 393931.1.

Applying Updates to JRE 6 and JRE 7 to Windows desktops

Auto-update will keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with JRE 7 installed.

Auto-update will only keep JRE 7 up-to-date for Windows users with both JRE 6 and 7 installed.

JRE 6 users are strongly encouraged to apply the latest Critical Patch Updates as soon as possible after each release. The Jave SE CPUs will be available via My Oracle Support.  EBS users can find more information about JRE 6 and 7 updates here:

The dates for future Java SE CPUs can be found on the Critical Patch Updates, Security Alerts and Third Party Bulletin.  An RSS feed is available on that site for those who would like to be kept up-to-date.

Will EBS users be forced to upgrade to JDK 7 for EBS application tier servers?

No. This upgrade will be highly recommended but will be optional for EBS application tier servers running on Windows, Linux, and Solaris.  You can choose to remain on JDK 6 to the end of Java SE 6 Extended Support in June 2017.  If you remain on JDK 6, you will continue to receive critical bug fixes and security fixes as well as general maintenance for JDK 6 to the end of June 2017.

But if the application tier nodes are planned to be upgraded to Java 7.0, the same upgrade in the OracleAS 10.1.2 ORACLE HOME must be planned together.

This announcement includes:

Upgrade to 11gR2 Database instead of patching 10gR2

It's always helpful to check the latest Lifetime Support Policy documents when considering your upgrade options.  As a guiding principle, you should upgrade to the database release that gives you the longest supported timeline.

Oracle Database 10gR2 is now in Extended Support through July 2013.  In general, if you're applying database-level updates to your Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i environment, you'll get a better return on your investment of time if you upgrade directly to the latest 11gR2 database release.  Premier Support for 11gR2 runs through January 2015, and Extended Support runs through January 2018.

Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.0 originally shipped with OracleAS 10.1.3 Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J) for running its Java-based content.  Regular readers of this blog know that we certified OracleAS 10.1.3.4 with Apps 12 at the end of 2008, with additional operating system platforms following shortly afterwards.

We've now certified Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.3.5 OC4J with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.  You can upgrade to OracleAS 10.1.3.5 OC4J directly from OracleAS 10.1.3, 10.1.3.3, or 10.1.3.4.  This certification allows you to upgrade the OC4J components in your R12 techstack to get take advantage of the latest performance and stability improvements in this incremental patchset.  To make sure that there's no misunderstanding about what can be upgraded, the full name of this patchset is:
It's important to note that either OracleAS 10.1.3.3, 10.1.3.4, or 10.1.3.5 are mandatory prerequisites if you plan to upgrade your Release 12 application tier to the latest certified version of Java 6.

Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.4 Certified with E-Business Suite 11i

Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.4 was certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.0 earlier this year.  Our Applications Technology Group has just released their certification of Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.4 with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i.

If you missed that earlier announcement, here's a recap of the basics. Secure Enterprise Search (SES) provides new search capabilities for EBS: Apps users can search for E-Business Suite data using a unified search engine, with search results displayed based upon their Applications responsibilities. Searches can be performed on structured and unstructured data. Notably, search results respect multi-level security, including:
    • Role-based access control (RBAC) functional and data security
    • Product-specific security policies

    Introducing the Search Modeller

This certification also has an added bonus:  it includes the new Search Modeler for E-Business Suite customers.  Search Modeler Version 1.1 is certified with Apps 11i as well as Apps 12 releases.

Search Modeler is a web-based tool that allows you to create search solutions tailored to your business needs. You can create search solutions for any E-Business Suite product. In most cases you can also include custom application objects as part of your search solution, if your custom applications as registered in the EBS Application Object Library.

    Prerequisites
    • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i version 11.5.10.2
    • Oracle Applications Technology 11i.ATG_PF.H.delta.6 (Release Update Pack 6)
    • Oracle Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.4
    Supported Platforms

Secure Enterprise Search may be optionally installed on standalone external server and integrated with EBS 11i. The operating system platforms supported for the standalone Secure Enterprise Search instance are:

    Thirteen New E-Business 12.1.1 Database-Tier Only Certifications for 10gR2

Our Applications Platforms Group has just released a flurry of new platform certifications for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 for the 10gR2 10.2.0.4 Database Server.  The following operating systems are now certified for database-tier only deployments:
    • Sun Solaris x86-64 (Solaris 10)
    • IBM: Linux on System z (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
    • IBM: Linux on Power Systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
    • Linux Itanium (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5, Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise System 9 and 10)
These database-tier only platforms were previously certified with E-Business Suite 12.0 and 10gR2.  Customers running those combinations can now apply the 12.1.1 Maintenance Pack to upgrade their application tier to EBS 12.1.1 while running the 10gR2 database on one of the above platforms.

This is a database-tier only certification (previously known as a 'split configuration database tier' certification), where the application tier must be on a fully certified E-Business Suite R12 platform.

    Still Underway

The certification of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 with Windows 2003 (x64) and Windows Itanium as database tier-only platforms is still underway.  I don't have firm schedules for this certification yet, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

Database Vault 11.1.0.7 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Oracle DB Vault allows security administrators to protect a database from privileged account access to application data.  Database objects can be placed in protected realms, which can be accessed only if a specific set of conditions are met.

Database Vault 10gR2 was certified last year with Oracle E-Business Suite.  We're pleased to announce that the latest Database Vault 11gR1 Version 11.1.0.7 is now certified with E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.

You can now enable Database Vault 11gR1 on your existing E-Business Suite 11.1.0.7 Database instance.  If you already have DB Vault 10gR2 enabled in your E-Business Suite environment, you can now upgrade to the 11gR1 Database.  We also support EBS patching with Database Vault 11.1.0.7 enabled. Our DB Vault realm creation and grants-related scripts have been revised to reduce patching downtimes.

Tablespace Encryption 11.1.0.7 Certified with EBS 12

Oracle Advanced Security is an optional licenced Oracle 11gR1 Database add-on.  Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) offers two different features:  column encryption and tablespace encryption.  We certified the TDE column encryption feature with the E-Business Suite last year.  We're pleased to expand our 11gR1 Database certification to include the tablespace encryption feature.  This option was recently certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i, and now Tablespace Encryption 11.1.0.7 is certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12, too.

What is Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) ?

    Advanced_Security_Overview.gif

Oracle Advanced Security Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) allows you to protect data at rest. TDE helps address privacy and PCI requirements by encrypting personally identifiable information (PII) such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers.

TDE is completely transparent to existing applications with no triggers, views or other application changes required. Data is transparently encrypted when written to disk and transparently decrypted after an application user has successfully authenticated and passed all authorization checks. Authorization checks include verifying the user has the necessary select and update privileges on the application table and checking Database Vault, Label Security and Virtual Private Database enforcement policies.

Existing database backup routines will continue to work, with the data at rest remaining encrypted in the backup. For encryption of entire database backups, TDE can be used in combination with Oracle RMAN.

What is Tablespace Encryption ? TDE_Key_Management_Architecture.png

New in Oracle Database 11g Release 1, the Oracle Advanced Security now includes support for tablespace encryption.

When a tablespace is created through Enterprise Manager or on the command line, an option now exists to specify that the file be encrypted on the file system. When new data is added to the new tablespace using the insert command or datapump, entire tables will be transparently encrypted. When the database reads data blocks from the encrypted tablespace it will transparently decrypt the data blocks.

With this certification, Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 environments can be migrated to encrypted tablespaces. For more information, please refer to:
