OracleAS 10.1.3.4 Certified on IBM AIX for EBS 12

jcee.color.logo.gif

We're continuing to fill in the platform gaps for some of our recent techstack certifications.  We certified Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.3.4 with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 in December, 2008.  The two exceptions to that certification at the time were for the IBM AIX and HP-UX Itanium operating system platforms.

HP-UX Itanium was later certified in January 2009, and now we're crossing the IBM AIX bridge.  IBM AIX customers running Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 may now upgrade to OracleAS 10.1.3.4 OC4J directly from OracleAS 10.1.3 or 10.1.3.3.  This certification allows you to upgrade the internal OC4J components in the R12 techstack to take advantage of the latest performance and stability improvements in this incremental patchset.  To make sure that there's no misunderstanding about what can be upgraded, the full name of this patchset is:

On Apps Tier Patching and Support: A Primer for E-Business Suite Users

The Oracle Server Technologies division issued some important updates to their support policies in the following document:

I discussed the implications of the database-related policy updates for E-Business Suite users in this recently-published article.  It's time to discuss the implications of these policy updates for E-Business Suite application tier servers and externally-integrated Oracle Application Server instances.  This article also discusses the E-Business Suite application tier certification process and the safety of applying interim Fusion Middleware patches to your Apps environments.

If you've read the previous article about database patching implications, parts of this new article will sound very familiar.  But stick with us; the implications for E-Business Suite application tier servers are subtly different and it's important that EBS sysadmins get the whole picture for both tiers.

Optimizing R12 Performance via OC4J Load-Balancing

Oracle Application Server provides features that allow customers to load balance their middle tier deployments.  OC4J Clustering in OracleAS 10g is one such deployment that is widely used in load balanced configurations.

Starting with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.0.2 (Release Update Pack 2), we support OC4J Clustering as part of AutoConfig's load balancing deployment options. This configuration option is supported for the OC4J instance running out of R12's 10.1.3 ORACLE_HOME.

Clustering Model

Oracle Application Server 10g 10.1.3 supports various models for OC4J clustering:
  • Dynamic node discovery
  • Static discovery servers
  • Cross topology gateways
  • Manual node configuration.
E-Business Suite Release 12 uses the manual node configuration model, which is also referred to as static node-to-node communication. Node and port information is manually specified in this mode. Configuration details are managed by Autoconfig, which handles all necessary settings in the R12 configuration files.

Figure-1 static node-to-node communication model

Deployment Options

Release 12 supports the following deployment options with OC4J clustering:
  1. Single Web Entry Point
  2. Multiple Web Entry Points

Prerequisites

  1. Oracle Applications Technology Stack Patch Set 2 5917601 or higher.
    • This Patch Set is included in the R12.ATG_PF.A.DELTA.2 5917344 and the Release 12.0.2 (Release Update Pack 2)
  2. A correctly-configured hardware load balancer

Configuring OC4J Load Balancing

Configuring both deployment options requires:
  1. Changing the E-Business Suite Context file using the Context File Editor
  2. Running AutoConfig
  3. Restarting the application tier server processes.
Single Web Entry Point

In this deployment option, there is single web entry point for the OC4J applications - oacore, forms and oafm services are configured to run on all or some of the application tier nodes.

Family Pack Updates vs. Release Update Packs

New readers might have missed previous discussions about naming standards. To recap:  in Release 11i, we have these things called Rollup Patches, which inexplicably became known as "RUPs."  Release 11i Rollup Patches contain patches for a single product family (e.g. ATG Family Pack H Rollup 4).

In Release 12, we're now shipping these things called Release Update Packs.  Given the way that neologisms form, it's inevitable that these will be called "RUPs" too.  The difference is that the R12 Release Update Packs combine patches created across several E-Business Suite product families.

The patch that we're announcing today only includes updates for the Applications Technology family of products, that is, the technology stack for the E-Business Suite Release 12.  This patch does not include updates to the functional applications like Financials or HRMS.  For information about the broader Apps 12.0.4 Release Update Pack, see:
This ATG rollup patch includes all fixes released on top of ATG Family Pack A, including those released in the following updates:
Since this is the fourth update to the Release 12 technology stack, its official (admittedly cryptic) name is: R12.ATG_PF.A.DELTA.4.

This ATG rollup patch includes all fixes released on top of ATG Family Pack A, including those released in the following updates:
Since this is the third update to the Release 12 technology stack, its official (admittedly cryptic) name is: R12.ATG_PF.A.DELTA.3.

Prerequisites

You must apply the R12.AD.A.DELTA.3 (patch 6272715) before applying this ATG rollup patch.  For more information about that prerequisite AD patch, see Oracle Applications DBA Software Updates, Release 12.0.3 (Metalink Note 454385.1).

This ATG Family
Pack update can be applied on top of the following:
What's New?

Regardless of what it's called, the third Applications technology stack update for Release 12 contains the following new features:
  • Oracle Application Framework

HGrid 'Record Set Size' Property - For an HGrid (hierarchical grid), the Record Set Size property on nodeDefinition items can be personalized by administrators. When the Expand All feature of an HGrid is being used, setting the Record Set Size for child nodes limits the number of child records displayed for each parent record at that level of the HGrid. This improves the display performance for very large HGrids.

  • Oracle Applications Technology Stack

Customizable Directory Information Trees (DIT) and configurable Relative Distinguished Names (RDN) - These features are now supported for use in
Oracle E-Business Suite environments integrated with Single Sign-On 10g. Default values no longer have to be used. For further details, see the Oracle System Administrator's Guide - Security at Oracle E-Business Suite Online Documentation Library Release 12+.

  • Oracle Diagnostics

Oracle Diagnostics has enhanced support for long-running tests as well as tests that generate large reports. See the Oracle Applications Supportability
Guide at Oracle E-Business Suite Online Documentation Library Release 12+ for more details.

  • Oracle XML Gateway

Notifying Transaction Owners for Errored Transactions - To manage transactions errors more efficiently, Oracle XML Gateway now lets you associate a transaction owner with a transaction type in the Define Transactions form. If an error occurs in a transaction of that type, Oracle XML Gateway sends a notification to the transaction owner in addition to the Oracle XML Gateway system administrator and trading partner contact. This notification allows the transaction owner and system administrator to act on the error if needed. See the Oracle XML Gateway User's Guide at
Oracle E-Business Suite Online Documentation Library Release 12+ for more details.

Automatic Reprocessing of Errored Transactions After Notification Timeout - Oracle XML Gateway uses two new profile options to manage
notification timeouts proactively if no explicit action was taken on an error notification. The ECX: Notification Timeout profile option sets the timeout period, measured in minutes, for a notification. The ECX: Maximum Retries profile option sets the maximum number of times that Oracle XML Gateway will automatically reprocess the errored transaction after the notification timeout period.
See the Oracle XML Gateway User's Guide at Oracle E-Business Suite Online Documentation Library Release 12+ for more details.
What's Been Fixed?

In addition to those new features, this update contains fixes for the following areas:
  • Oracle Application Object Library (AOL)
  • Oracle Report Manager
  • Oracle Applications Technology Stack
  • Oracle Web Applications Desktop Integrator (WebADI)
  • Oracle Workflow
  • Oracle XML Publisher

Apps Technology 12.0.2 Update Now Available

[July 18, 2007 Update:  Added links to subsequent article discussing the overall E-Business Suite 12.0.2 Release Update Pack.]

The second major update for the Apps Release 12 technology stack is now available for download from Metalink:

Family Pack Updates vs. Release Update Packs

A short word about terminology is needed before I go much further.  In Release 11i, we have these things called Rollup Patches, which inexplicably became known as "RUPs."  Release 11i Rollup Patches contain patches for a single product family (e.g.

As of today, this Family Pack update can be applied on top of the previously-released Apps 12.0.1 Release Update Pack.   It is included in the Apps 12.0.2 Release Update Pack.

The patch that we're announcing today only includes updates for the Applications Technology family of products, that is, the technology stack for the E-Business Suite Release 12.  This patch does not include updates to the functional applications like Financials or HRMS.  For information about the broader Apps 12.0.2 Release Update Pack, see:
This ATG rollup patch includes all fixes released on top of ATG Family Pack A, including those previously released in the Apps 12.0.1 Release Update Pack.  Since this is the second update to the Release 12 technology stack, its official (cryptic) name is: R12.ATG_PF.A.DELTA.2.

What's New?

Regardless of what it's called, the second Applications technology stack update for Release 12 contains the following new features:

OC4J Load Balancing

Previously, Oracle E-Business Suite customers needed to purchase third-party hardware in order to support multiple application tiers. This new feature utilizes the native Oracle Application Server 10g's ability to load-balance without the need for third-party hardware.

For more details, see:
Technology Inventory Report

This new Technology Inventory Report delivers standardized and accurate version information about the Applications Technology Stack. When Oracle E-Business Suite administrators want to obtain the version of technology that is installed, they can run this report as a command line utility.

For more details, see:
Oracle Diagnostics Available from the Diagnostics Page

A new link has been added to the Diagnostics page (a separate link, not a choice on the poplist). If you select this link, you navigate to the Oracle Diagnostics home page. To use Oracle Diagnostics, see the Oracle Applications Supportability Guide.

What's Been Fixed?

In addition to those new features, this update contains fixes for the following areas:
  • Application Object Library Software Updates (17 fixes)
  • Applications Manager Software Updates (2 fixes)
  • Technology Stack Software Updates (1 fix)
  • Workflow Software Updates (4 fixes)
  • XML Publisher Software Updates (2 fixes)
  • e-Commerce Gateway Software Updates (4 fixes)
