Sun JRE 1.6.0_31 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Java logoI'm pleased to let you know that the latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_31 (a.k.a. JRE 6u31-b05) is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.

What's new in Java 1.6.0_31?

See the 1.6.0_31 Update Release Notes for details about what has changed in this release.  This release is available for download from the usual Sun channels and through the 'Java Automatic Update' mechanism.

Worried about the 'mismanaged session cookie' issue?

No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances.

The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22.

All JRE releases are certified with EBS upon release

Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and higher.  We test all new JRE releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all JRE releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.

You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE releases to your EBS users' desktops.  If you wish, your desktop administrators can enable the Java "Automatic updates" option on your end-users' desktops.

Best Practices for Combining EBS Upgrades with Platform Migrations

Odds are that you're planning an EBS upgrade soon.  EBS 11i Extended Support runs out in 2013, and EBS 12.0 Premier Support ended in January 2012. You might need to combine your EBS upgrade with a operating system upgrade or hardware migration for your servers, too.

Projects that combine EBS upgrades with migrations pose some interesting questions.  What tools do you use if you're...:

  • ... upgrading to a newer version of your current operating system?
  • ... migrating to a different platform with the same endian format?
  • ... migrating to a different platform with a different endian format?

Diagram showing small endian and big endian platforms

Evaluating the different options

I have published a new whitepaper that provides a comprehensive evaluation of the different mechanisms available in upgrading the Oracle E-Business Suite while considering platform migration. This document is meant as an overview to supplement existing detailed documentation that outlines specific processes to perform the migration:

This whitepaper discusses the use of Transportable Database, Recovery Manager (rman), Export/Import using Datapump, Transportable Tablespaces (TTS), Rapid Install, and Release Update Packs.

Application server vs. database server upgrades

Platform migrations may considered separately for the application and database tiers, or for both tiers together. In either case, it is critical to understand that the migrations are separate processes that can be thought of logically as such. This is especially crucial in light of potentially reducing downtimes by breaking them out into separate discrete events which may have different considerations for users and administrators.

Upgrade your database server before upgrading EBS

We recommend that you migrate your database to a new version and new server platform first.  This allows you to perform this in a separate earlier downtime.

For example, you might wish to migrate your EBS 11.5.10.2 database tier running 11gR2 to Oracle Linux 5 on newer and faster hardware prior to an R12 upgrade. Performing this migration first would leave the your environment in a certified configuration that you can continue using until you wish to perform your EBS R12 upgrade.

Regardless of whether this migration is done in a separate earlier downtime or as part of a single downtime, the newer hardware would allow the EBS upgrade to go faster.

Best practices for combined upgrades

Here are our recommendations when performing EBS upgrades and platform migrations in a single project:

  1. Consider the database and application tier migrations separately and plan to perform the database migration first.

  2. Choose the right migration process for the database while considering the target platform, database size and process complexity.

  3. Migrate and upgrade your EBS application tier from 11i to R12 by laying down the new application tier on the target platform as part of the upgrade.

Oracle Database 10gR2 10.2.0.5 Certified with EBS 11i on Tru64, Linux on Power, Linux Itanium

As a follow-on to the original certification announcement, Oracle Database 10gR2 Patch Set 10.2.0.5.0 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i on the following additional platforms:

  • HP Tru64 (5.1b)
  • IBM: Linux on POWER Systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5; SLES 9, 10)1
  • Linux Itanum (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3, 4, 5; SLES 9, 10)1

Notes:
1 This is a database tier only (previously known as a split tier) certification where the application tier must be on a different fully certified E-Business Suite 11i platform.

Certification of 10.2.0.5 on Windows Itanium is still in progress and will be announced separately.

This announcement includes:

  • For EBS 11i version 11.5.10 CU2+ATG_PF.H.delta.6 (RUP 6) and higher:
    • Real Application Clusters
    • Oracle Database Vault
    • TDE Column Encryption
    • Advanced Security Option/Advanced Networking Option (ANO/ASO)
    • Export/Import Process for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i
    • Transportable Database and Transportable Tablespaces Data Migration Processes for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i

Please refer to the original announcement for additional information pertaining to this certification.

Upgrade to 11gR2 Database instead of patching 10gR2

It's always helpful to check the latest Lifetime Support Policy documents when considering your upgrade options.  As a guiding principle, you should upgrade to the database release that gives you the longest supported timeline.

Oracle Database 10gR2 is now in Extended Support through July 2013.  In general, if you're applying database-level updates to your Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i environment, you'll get a better return on your investment of time if you upgrade directly to the latest 11gR2 database release.  Premier Support for 11gR2 runs through January 2015, and Extended Support runs through January 2018.

Limited Extended Support Available for Oracle Single Sign-On through 2012

Premier Support for Oracle Single Sign-On 10gR3 ends on December 31, 2011.  This was originally slated to be the end of error correction support for Oracle Single Sign-On 10gR3.

Our Oracle Identity Management team has just revised that policy.  If you have an existing support contract, you will now be able to receive limited Extended Support for Oracle Single Sign-On from January 2012 through December 2012.  Only Severity 1 fixes for Oracle Single Sign-On will be released during the limited Extended Support period.  Critical Patch Updates (CPUs) for Oracle Single Sign-On will not be released during the limited Extended Support period.

These changes are published in:

This is good news for those of you that have not been able to migrate to a single sign-on solution utilizing Oracle Access Manager and Oracle E-Business Suite Access Gate.  Keep in mind though, the clock is ticking and limited extended support will end in a mere 12 months.  It is strongly recommended that you use this additional time to integrate your single sign-on deployment with Oracle Access Manager and Oracle E-Business Suite Access Gate.

Our recommendations

EBS 12 customers should move to a single sign-on solution using Oracle Access Manager 11g

EBS 11i customers first upgrade to EBS Release 12.1.3, then integrate with Oracle Access Manager 11g.  If an R12 upgrade is not possible, then R11i customers are encouraged to migrate their single sign-on solution to Oracle Access Manager 10gR3

EBS customers looking to deploy a single sign-on solution for the first time are strongly encouraged to deploy a solution using Oracle Access Manager 11g.

Sun JRE 1.6.0_30 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Java logo

I'm pleased to let you know that the latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_30 (a.k.a. JRE 6u30-b12) is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.

What's new in Java 1.6.0_30?

See the 1.6.0_30 Update Release Notes for details about what has changed in this release.

In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22:  for example, JRE 1.6.0_23, 1.6.0_24, 1.6.0_25, and 1.6.0_26, and higher.

In-House Generated Certificates Supported for Signing E-Business Suite JAR Files

[Nov 30, 2011 Update: Removed certified platforms as this enhancement is certified for all E-Business Suite  platforms.]

The E-Business Suite uses Java Archive (JAR) files to deliver certain types of E-Business Suite content to desktop clients.  Previously we announced the support of securing JAR files with 3072-bit certificates signed by a third-party Certificate Authority (CA).  We now support securing JAR files with in-house generated certificates.  The new steps to use an in-house Certificate Authority for securing JAR files are provided in:

This enhancement is great news for those of you familiar with the warning that is triggered when using a self-signed certificate.  As a result of supporting self-signed certificates, the following warning can be avoided:

Oracle Internet Directory 11gR1 11.1.1.5 Certified with E-Business Suite

Oracle E-Business Suite comes with native user authentication and management capabilities out-of-the-box. If you need more-advanced features, it's also possible to integrate it with Oracle Internet Directory and Oracle Single Sign-On or Oracle Access Manager, which allows you to link the E-Business Suite with third-party tools like Microsoft Active Directory, Windows Kerberos, and CA Netegrity SiteMinder.

Architecture diagram showing Oracle Access Manager Oracle Internet Directory E-Business Suite AccessGate WebGate

For details about third-party integration architectures, see either of these article for EBS 11i and 12:

Oracle Internet Directory 11.1.1.5 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i, 12.0 and 12.1.  OID 11.1.1.5 is part of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 Version 11.1.1.5.0, also known as FMW 11g Patchset 4.  Certified E-Business Suite releases are:
  • EBS Release 11i 11.5.10.2 + ATG PH.H RUP 7 and higher
  • EBS Release 12.0.6 and higher
  • EBS Release 12.1.1 and higher

Supported Configurations

Oracle Internet Directory 11.1.1.5.0 can be integrated with two single sign-on solutions for EBS environments:

    • Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Directory Integration Platform (DIP) from Oracle Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 4 (11.1.1.5.0) with Oracle Single Sign-On Server and Oracle Delegated Administration Services Release 10g (10.1.4.3.0) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 11i, 12.0.6 or 12.1.x).
    • Oracle Internet Directory and Directory Integration Platform from Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 4 (11.1.1.5.0) with Oracle Access Manager 10g (10.1.4.3) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 11i or 12.1.x).
    • Oracle Internet Directory and Directory Integration Platform from Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 4 (11.1.1.5.0) with Oracle Access Manager 11gR1 (11.1.1.5) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 12.0.6 or higher or 12.1.x).

    Oracle Access Manager strongly recommended

Oracle has two single sign-on solutions: Oracle Single Sign-On Server (OSSO) and Oracle Access Manager (OAM). Oracle strongly recommends that all new single sign-on implementations use Oracle Access Manager. Oracle Access Manager is the preferred solution going forward, and forms the basis of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g. OSSO is no longer being actively developed and will not be ported to Oracle WebLogic Server.

    Platform certifications

Oracle Internet Directory is certified to run on any operating system for which Oracle WebLogic Server 11g is certified. Refer to the Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g System Requirements for more details.

For information on operating systems supported by Oracle Internet Directory and its components, refer to the Oracle Identity and Access Management 11gR1 certification matrix.

Integration with Oracle Internet Directory involves components spanning several different suites of Oracle products. There are no restrictions on which platform any particular component may be installed so long as the platform is supported for that component.

Latest DSTv17 Timezone Patches Available for E-Business Suite R11i

Hourglass iconIf your E-Business Suite Release 11i or 12 environment is configured to support Daylight Saving Time (DST) or international time zones, it's important to keep your timezone definition files up-to-date.

DSTv17 is now available and certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i. The DSTv17 update includes the timezone information from Olson tzdata 2011j.

    Is Your Apps Environment Affected?

When a country or region changes DST rules or their time zone definitions, your Oracle E-Business Suite environment will require patching if:

    • Your Oracle E-Business Suite environment is located in the affected country or region OR
    • Your Oracle E-Business Suite environment is located outside the affected country or region but you conduct business or have customers or suppliers in the affected country or region

For more details about the timezones affected by the DSTv17 update, see:

Sun JRE 1.6.0_29 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Java logoSome questions following our last few JRE certifications indicated that there's still lingering confusion about which JRE releases are safe to use with E-Business Suite environments.

In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22:  for example, JRE 1.6.0_23, 1.6.0_24, 1.6.0_25, and 1.6.0_26.

As of today, you can also apply Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_29 (a.k.a. JRE 6u29-b11).  JRE 1.6.0_29 is certified with E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.

    What happened to JRE 1.6.0_28?

JRE 1.6.0_28 (6u28) was not released externally.  JRE 1.6.0_29 is a CPU Security Java release.
