Updated Whitepaper: Extending EBS 12.1.3 using Oracle Application Express

I'm pleased to announce an update to the whitepaper:

  • Extending Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 using Oracle Application Express (APEX), Revision 1 (Note 1306563.1)
Oracle Application Express APEX screenshot

It's possible to personalize the E-Business Suite, but there may be situations where personalizations aren't sufficient to meet your requirements. In these scenarios, Oracle Application Express, also known as Oracle APEX, is an option for creating supplemental applications that can be integrated with your Oracle E-Business Suite instance.

This whitepaper outlines how to extend Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3 (and higher) functionality using Oracle Application Express. Recommended architecture and security considerations are discussed in detail. This new version has been updated to reflect the latest versions of the documentation and technologies, including the use of Oracle Access Manager (OAM) for authentication.

You can also find the whitepaper on the APEX OTN Site > Learn More > Technical Information and White Papers > Extending Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 using Oracle Application Express (PDF).

ATG Live Webcast June 28: Scrambling Sensitive Data in EBS 12 Cloned Environments

Securing the Oracle E-Business Suite includes protecting the underlying E-Business data in production and non-production databases.  While steps can be taken to provide a secure configuration to limit EBS access, a better approach to protecting non-production data is simply to scramble (mask) the data in the non-production copy.

The Oracle E-Business Suite Template for Data Masking Pack can be used in situations where confidential or regulated data needs to be shared with other non-production users who need access to some of the original data, but not necessarily every table.  Examples of non-production users include internal application developers or external business partners such as offshore testing companies, suppliers or customers.

The Oracle E-Business Suite Template for Data Masking Pack is applied to a non-production environment with the Enterprise Manager Grid Control Data Masking Pack.  When applied, the Oracle E-Business Suite Template for Data Masking Pack will create an irreversibly scrambled version of your production database for development and testing. This ATG Live Webcast is your chance to come learn about the Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Template for Data Masking Pack from the experts.

Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Template for Data Masking

Example of Data Masking from Production to Non-Production Instance
The agenda for the Oracle E-Business Suite Template for Data Masking Pack webcast includes the following topics:

  • What does data masking do in E-Business Suite environments?
    • De-identify the data
    • Mask sensitive data
    • Maintain data validity
  • How can EBS customers use data masking?
  • References

Join Eric Bing, Senior Director and Elke Phelps, Senior Principal Product Manager, as they discusses the Oracle E-Business Suite Template for Data Masking Pack.

Oracle Internet Directory 11gR1 11.1.1.6 Certified with E-Business Suite

[June 7, 2012 Update: Corrected typo in "Supported Configurations" section]

Oracle E-Business Suite comes with native user authentication and management capabilities out-of-the-box. If you need more-advanced features, it's also possible to integrate it with Oracle Internet Directory and Oracle Single Sign-On or Oracle Access Manager, which allows you to link the E-Business Suite with third-party tools like Microsoft Active Directory, Windows Kerberos, and CA Netegrity SiteMinder.

For details about third-party integration architectures, see either of these article for EBS 11i and 12:

Oracle Internet Directory 11.1.1.6 is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i, 12.0 and 12.1.  OID 11.1.1.6 is part of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g Release 1 Version 11.1.1.6.0, also known as FMW 11g Patchset 5.  Certified E-Business Suite releases are:
  • EBS Release 11i 11.5.10.2 + ATG PH.H RUP 7 and higher
  • EBS Release 12.0.6 and higher
  • EBS Release 12.1.1 and higher

Supported Configurations

Oracle Internet Directory 11.1.1.6.0 can be integrated with two single sign-on solutions for EBS environments:

  • Oracle Internet Directory and Directory Integration Platform from Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 5 (11.1.1.6.0) with Oracle Access Manager 10g (10.1.4.3) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 11i or 12.1.x).
  • Oracle Internet Directory and Directory Integration Platform from Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 5 (11.1.1.6.0) with Oracle Access Manager 11gR1 (11.1.1.5) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 12.0.6 or higher or 12.1.x).
  • Oracle Internet Directory (OID) and Directory Integration Platform (DIP) from Oracle Fusion Middleware 11gR1 Patchset 5  (11.1.1.6.0) with Oracle Single Sign-On Server and Oracle Delegated Administration Services Release 10g (10.1.4.3.0) with an existing Oracle E-Business Suite system (Release 11i, 12.0.6 or 12.1.x)

Oracle Access Manager strongly recommended

Oracle has two single sign-on solutions: Oracle Single Sign-On Server (OSSO) and Oracle Access Manager (OAM). Oracle strongly recommends that all new single sign-on implementations use Oracle Access Manager. Oracle Access Manager is the preferred solution going forward, and forms the basis of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g. OSSO is no longer being actively developed and will not be ported to Oracle WebLogic Server.

Platform certifications

Oracle Internet Directory is certified to run on any operating system for which Oracle WebLogic Server 11g is certified. Refer to the Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g System Requirements for more details.

For information on operating systems supported by Oracle Internet Directory and its components, refer to the Oracle Identity and Access Management 11gR1 certification matrix.

Integration with Oracle Internet Directory involves components spanning several different suites of Oracle products. There are no restrictions on which platform any particular component may be installed so long as the platform is supported for that component.

EBS File Comparison Report Now Available

If your Oracle E-Business Suite customizations are still making you hesitate about upgrading from Release 11i to Release 12, we have another useful tool to help you along: the brand new EBS File Comparison Report. This new report joins the related EBS Seed Data Comparison Report and the EBS Data Model Comparison Report in our collection of handy upgrade comparison reports.

You can download the new file comparison report here:

You can download its companion reports here:

File Comparison Report Contents

The new report provides detailed information about what files were added, removed, or stubbed (made inactive) during changes between Releases 11.5.10.2 and 12.1.3 of Oracle E-Business Suite. For text-based files such as .xml files, you can drill down into the files to see the actual changes between the file versions. The File Comparison Report includes the following file types:

  • Forms (.fmb files)
  • Libraries (.pll files)
  • Reports (.rdf files)
  • Java (.class files)
  • Java Server Pages (.jsp files)
  • Oracle Application Framework (OAF) Pages (.xml files)
  • Oracle Application Framework (OAF) Personalizations (.xml files)
  • Workflow Definition (.wft files)
  • Workflow Business Event System Object Definitions (.wfx files)
  • BI Publisher (XML Publisher) Reports - Layout template formats
  • BI Publisher (XML Publisher) Reports - Data Definition formats

Using the File Comparison Report

One example of how you might use the File Comparison Report is for assessing upgrade impacts on your personalizations. Start by getting a list of your personalizations as described in “Upgrading Form Personalizations and OA Framework Personalizations from Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i to 12.1” (Note 1292611.1).

Three categories of personalizations might be affected by upgrades. Here is how the File Comparison Report can help you with those:

  1. Personalizations shipped by product teams that you might have modified further: look at “Oracle Application Framework (OAF) Personalizations (.xml files)” to see which shipped personalizations have changed. You can drill in to see exactly what has changed for each affected personalization.
  2. OA Framework Personalizations where the shipped base page may have changed: look at “Oracle Application Framework (OAF) Pages (.xml files)” to see which shipped pages have changed. You can drill in to see exactly what has changed for each affected personalization. If a page you have personalized hasn’t changed between releases, you probably do not need to change your personalizations for the page in the new release.
  3. Oracle Forms Personalizations where the shipped form may have been removed: look at “Forms (.fmb files)”. Because these are binary files, you cannot see exactly what has changed for each form, but knowing what forms have been removed will still save you time in assessing what form personalizations can be retired.

Personalization assessment is just one example of how you can use the File Comparison Report. We expect you will find many ways to use it!

Your feedback is welcome

This new tool was produced by our hard-working EBS Release Management team, and they are actively seeking your feedback. Please feel free to share your experiences with it by posting a comment here. You can also request enhancements to this tool via the My Oracle Support Community mentioned in Note 1446430.1.

Sun JRE 1.6.0_32 Certified with Oracle E-Business Suite

Java logo

[Apr. 30, 2012 Update: Clarified certification information for JRE 7, added more details about Java 7 plans]

I'm pleased to let you know that the latest Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_32 (a.k.a. JRE 6u32-b05) is now certified with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.

What's new in Java 1.6.0_32?

See the 1.6.0_32 Update Release Notes for details about what has changed in this release.  This release is available for download from the usual Sun channels and through the 'Java Automatic Update' mechanism.

32-bit and 64-bit versions certified

This certification includes both the 32-bit and 64-bit JRE versions.  64-bit JREs are certified only on 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Worried about the 'mismanaged session cookie' issue?

No need to worry -- it's fixed.  To recap: JRE releases 1.6.0_18 through 1.6.0_22 had issues with mismanaging session cookies that affected some users in some circumstances.

The fix for those issues was first included in JRE 1.6.0_23. These fixes will carry forward and continue to be fixed in all future JRE releases.  In other words, if you wish to avoid the mismanaged session cookie issue, you should apply any release after JRE 1.6.0_22.

All JRE releases are certified with EBS upon release

Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline.  We test all new JRE releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all JRE releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.

You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE releases to your EBS users' desktops.  If you wish, your desktop administrators can enable the Java "Automatic updates" option on your end-users' desktops.

What about Java 7?

We're working on our Java 7 certification for the E-Business Suite right now.  Our first set of certifications will cover JRE 7 for Windows desktops.  This will be followed by JDK 7 certifications for server-based components.

These certifications haven't been completed yet.  You should remain on Java 6 for both desktop-based and server-based components until we announce those certifications.

Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog. I'll post updates here as soon as soon as they're available.

New Whitepaper: Upgrading your Customizations to Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12

Cover page for upgrading customizations whitepaperThe prospect of upgrading from Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i to Release 12 might seem intimidating if you have customized your EBS 11i environment. When considering this upgrade, one of the first things you need to do is review your customizations systematically.

I am pleased to announce the availability of a new white paper that will help you do that:

This white paper provides an overview of how you can manage and upgrade existing Release 11i customizations to Release 12.1. It covers identifying the various types of customizations you might have--such as personalizations, Oracle Forms, Web ADI, and mod_plsql--and how to handle them during your upgrade.

The document discusses upgrading Oracle E-Business Suite customizations in the context of the following cycle:

  1. Creating an inventory of your existing customizations
  2. Comparing customizations to standard Release 12 functionality
  3. Upgrading customizations
  4. Reimplementing customizations
  5. Creating future customizations

The paper also provides recommendations on customization technologies such as Oracle Application Framework (OAF), Oracle Application Express (APEX), and Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF).

This white paper is written for Oracle E-Business Suite system administrators, DBAs, developers, and implementers.

Identifying the Latest Family Packs for Oracle E-Business Suite

It's important to ensure that your E-Business Suite environment is kept current, but it can be tricky to identify the latest product-level Family Packs that have been released.  You might need to identify the latest Family Pack updates available for an Oracle E-Business Suite R12 or R11i environment when performing one of the following tasks:

  • Researching the latest functionality available
  • Implementing a new module
  • Planning an upgrade to your Oracle E-Business Suite environment
Two useful links are available on My Oracle Support that provide a listing of packs  for an Oracle E-Business Suite R12 or R11i environment.  To navigate to a listing of packs, first login to My Oracle Support.  Once logged in, navigate to the Patches & Updates tab:

Once on the Patches & Updates section, navigate to the Patching Quick Links region.  This region contains links to Latest R12 Packs and Latest R11i Packs:

After clicking one of the links for either R12 or R11i packs, you will be directed to a new screen that displays all available packs for the selected version.  Here's an example of the screen displayed upon clicking the Latest R12 Packs link (naturally, the actual Family Pack references may change over time):

Note that for R12, the listing displayed is the latest packs available for the most current release of R12.  Currently, this is Release 12.1.3.  For Release 11i, the listing displayed is for the most current release of R11i., 11.5.10.

Andy Tremayne, co-author of Oracle Applications Performance Tuning Handbook from Oracle Press, has worked with E-Business Suite worldwide on these types of EBS tuning projects.  Andy is presenting the next installment of our ATG Live Webcast series on Mar. 22, 2012.

Identifying Recommended Patches for E-Business Suite Environments

A question that is frequently posed by E-Business Suite sysadmins is – “What patches should I apply to my environment?”

There are three ways to get a list of recommended patches for your EBS environment:

  1. EBS 11i and 12:  Use the E-Business Suite Patch Wizard
  2. EBS 12 only:  Search using the My Oracle Support "Patch Search" feature
  3. EBS 11i and 12:  Search using the My Oracle Support "Recommended Patch Lists" shortcuts

To learn more about all three options, see:

Option 1: Use the EBS Patch Wizard (recommended)

Within Patch Wizard is the Recommend/Analyze Patches function which will create a list or recommended patches.  To use this feature in Patch Wizard, first login to your Oracle E-Business Suite environment with a user that has the System Administrator responsibility.  Then, navigate to System Administrator > Oracle Applications Manager >Patch Wizard.

NOTE:  If you are not familiar with the Patch Wizard utility, you should learn more about it.  The tool is provided with your EBS environment as part of Oracle Applications Manager.  It requires no additional installations to use.

You must first configure the Patch Wizard Preferences with a valid My Oracle Support account.  This configuration is a one time setup step.  Additional details regarding Patch Wizard and the initial configuration requirements are provided in the following My Oracle Support Note:

Once the initial configuration for Patch Wizard is complete, locate the Patch Recommendations Requests section in Patch Wizard as shown in the following figure.

Click on the Tasks button for Recommend/Analyze Patches After selecting the patch filter per your requirements, click OK and confirm the execution of the Recommended Patches request.  The output will display a list of recommended E-Business Suite patches with a status of Applied/Unapplied .

For additional details, please refer to Method 1 - Patch Wizard (EBS Support Recommended) section in the following My Oracle Support Document:

Option 2: Search My Oracle Support for EBS R12 patches

Another option for finding recommended patches is using the Patch Classification available from My Oracle Support.  First, login to My Oracle Support and go to the Patches & Updates tab as shown here:

In the Patch Search region, click on Product or Family (Advanced) as shown in the following figure:

Enter the Product, Release, Platform.  Then add Classifications by clicking the plus button as shown in the following figure:

Within Classification, check both Critical and Other Recommendations as shown in the following figure:

Now execute the search by clicking the Search button.  The search results will be then be displayed.  In the search results, the Classification column will indicate if the patch was Critical or Recommended.

For additional details, please refer to Method 2 - Patch Classification Search section in the following My Oracle Support Document:

Option 3: My Oracle Support "Recommended Patch List" shortcuts

At present, there are a couple of functional enhancements in the My Oracle Support development pipeline for Option 2, above.  These are being worked on right now; stay tuned to this blog for updates.

Until those enhancements are delivered, Option 3 is a tried-and-true method for getting a web-based listing of recommended patches.  The following links on My Oracle Support provide a listing of recommended patches for an Oracle E-Business Suite R12 or R11i environment.

First: login to My Oracle Support.  Once logged in, navigate to the Patches & Updates tab. Navigate to the Patching Quick Links region.  This region contains links to Recommended R12 Patches and Recommended R11i Patches:

After clicking one of the recommended patches links for either R12 or R11i, you have the ability to enter additional search criteria to narrow the results of the recommended patch list.  Search criteria include:

  • Maintenance Release,
  • Product or Product Family,
  • Platform or Language and
  • Updated in last “X” Days, Weeks or Months.

The search criteria for an R12 environment are displayed in the following screen shot:

For additional details, please refer to Method 3 - Legacy Search for Recommended Patches section in the following My Oracle Support Document:
