Webcast Replay Available: Technical Preview of EBS 12.2 Online Patching

[Sep. 20, 2013 Update:  EBS 12.2 is now available for download.  See this article for details.]

I am pleased to release the replay and presentation for ATG Live Webcast:

Technical Preview of EBS 12.2 Online Patching (Presentation)

Online patching editions

Kevin Hudson, Senior Director and one of the Online Patching architects, discussed one of the cornerstone new features in our upcoming Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2 release. This ground-breaking feature is based upon Edition-Based Redefinition, a new 11gR2 Database feature that was built to Oracle Applications division specifications to allow the E-Business Suite's database tier to be patched while the environment is running.  Online Patching combines the use of Edition-Based Redefinition and new E-Business Suite technologies to allow patching to the E-Business Suite's database and application tier servers while the environment is being actively used by its end-users. 11gR2 Transportable Tablespaces Certified for EBS 11i

Database migration across platforms of different "endian" (byte ordering) formats using the Transportable Tablespaces (TTS) process is now certified for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i (11.5.10.2) with Oracle Database 11g Release 2.

Small endian to big endian platform migrations

Obtaining this patch

This migration process requires a "Controlled" patch delivered by the Oracle E-Business Suite Platform Engineering team, i.e. it requires a password obtainable from Oracle Support. We released the patch in this manner to gauge uptake, and help identify and monitor any customer issues due to the nature of this technology. In addition to the requirement for 11.5.10.2 as the Release 11i version, TTS migration requires both the source machine and target machine databases to be 11gR2.

Does it meet your requirements?

Note that for migration across platforms of the same "endian" format, users are advised to use the Transportable Database (TDB) migration process instead for large databases. The "endian-ness" target platforms can be verified by querying the view V$DB_TRANSPORTABLE_PLATFORM using SQL*Plus (connected as sysdba) on the source platform:

SQL>select platform_name from v$db_transportable_platform;

If the intended target platform does not appear in the output, it means that it is of a different endian format from the source. Consequently. database migration will need to be performed via Transportable Tablespaces (for large databases) or export/import.

The use of Transportable Tablespaces can greatly speed up the migration of the data portion of the database. However, it does not affect metadata, which must still be migrated using export/import. We recommend that users initially perform a test migration on their database, using export/import with the 'metrics=y' parameter. This will help identify the relative amounts of data and metadata, and provide a basis for assessing likely gains in timing. In general, the larger the amount of data (compared to metadata), the greater the reduction in downtime that can be expected from using XTTS as a migration process.

IE 9, Firefox 4 Certifications Coming Soon for Oracle E-Business Suite

I'm still doggedly plowing through our article backlog following our two-month blogging hiatus.  Almost done.  Here's a long-outstanding response to a FAQ about new browsers.

Firefox logoAs of  today, Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.6 are the latest Windows desktop clients certified for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12.  We're working on our certifications of IE 9 and Firefox 4 right now.  Those certifications are going well, but we are running them in parallel with our work on the next major E-Business Suite release, so it's taking some time to get through these.

As usual, Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates. You're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.
