New Apps 11i AutoConfig + Templates Rollup Patch S Now Available

[June 18, 2008 Update: Mentioned the Oracle Diagnostics regression fix]

[May 6, 2008 Update: Clarified that Developer 6i patchset 18 was recommended in Jan2007 CPU]

[Editor's Note:  Ivo Dujmovic leads the hard-working Applications Technology Integration development team responsible for the E-Business Suite's technology stack and configuration management tools, including AutoConfig and its associated templates.  He's been providing deep technical guidance for this blog from the wings since its inception, so we're very lucky to have his direct contributions for this particular announcement.  I'm skipping the customary introductory article for him in the interest of getting this article published quickly, but we'll get a proper public welcome out for him soon.]

The latest TXK Rollup Patch S (Patch 6372396) is now released and is generally available for download from Oracle Metalink. The official name for this patch is:

TXK Rollup S: Screenshot of Metalink download page for TXK AutoConfig and Templates Rollup Patch S (APRIL/MAY 2008, Patch 6372396)

What's Included

This Rollup patch is cumulative:  it includes all E-Business Suite technology stack configuration fixes that we've previously released either individually or in patch sets such as  TXK Autoconfig Rollup Patch R (October/November 2007) and TXK AutoConfig Rollup Patch Q (Jul/Aug 2007).

But that's not all!  For completeness we have also added TXK Advanced Utilities Rollup Patch C (APRIL 2006) and other subsequent fixes in this area.

For more details about this patch's contents, see the README.  In the near future, we will also publish a couple of separate blog articles on the new features we are introducing.

Additional New Prerequisites

In addition to previous Oracle Home technology stack prerequisites (identified at patch-time via txkprepatchcheck utility), we have picked up a new ORACLE_HOME dependency on:

In the APPL_TOP, we picked up dependencies on fairly old and well-adopted rollups:

We know that part of the reason why our TXK RUPs enjoy such high adoption rates (thousands of downloads per quarter) is that they are self-contained. At this point in time, we have decided that taking up a wider set of well-adopted dependencies is a minimal price to pay for providing customers with all the latest technology configuration management functionality.

Please tell us if you find these additional requirements burdensome!

News:  TXK RUP S conflicts with Oracle
Diagnostics, introducing bug:

If you use Oracle Diagnostics, please apply the patch for bug 7126196.

Probably you need to change an image used in that article to the latest one. Otherwise it is a bit misleading.

Will "TXK Rollup Patch S" be included in ATG RUP7?

Posted by Chris Bittakis on May 06, 2008 at 05:46 AM PDT #

TXK RUP S is planned to be in ATG RUP7.
Time permitting, we might also submit TXK RUP T into ATG RUP7.

Note that TXK RUP R was in ATG RUP6.

Just to confirm: by "Doesn't do impact" you mean that you have successfully downloaded the patch?

Here is my analysis of the log portions you quote:
The first download (at 1:28) downloaded correctly the AIX port of RUP S.
The second download (at 1:41) which tried to download the generic platform of RUP S failed,
since that ARU is deleted (non applicable).

I could not find any bugs around this behavior, but if Patch Wizard tried on its own to do a generic download (in addition to a platform download), then its error message should explain there is no reason for concern if the generic download portion fails. This could be logged as an enhancement, or even bug, as I agree the log entries are confusing.

With the advent of ATG_PF.H.RUP6 (although, I suppose it could also be in TXK.S), there is a "not very clearly documented" change to the way a custom product top is added.

The previous method (per 216589.1) of simply adding an entry to topfile.txt is now deprecated. Apparently we must now define the product top through OAM. No big deal, really, but the documentation needs to be updated and the ATG_PF.H.RUP6 note should probably point this out (since it basically "undefines" the product top if it was added the old way).

James,You might be amused to hear that your suggestion has prompted a rather passionate discussion -- still ongoing -- between our Development and Support experts who own both sets of documentation related to this.  We're working out how to handle this update; stay tuned (and thanks for providing the impetus for us to have this internal discussion about processes).Regards,Steven

I just discovered that applying TXK Rollup S removed IZU_TOP from the context file. Unless we manually reinsert the s_izutop line in the new context file, IZU_TOP environment variable doesn't get sourced. As a result we can't apply new Oracle Diagnostics patches. Any comments on this ?

Your point is referring to the same issue as James: the issue is that an undocumented but widely used way of including custom product tops (manual editing of topfile.txt) has conflicted with AutoConfig. We have since changed AutoConfig to integrate/take into account the manual edits in topfile.txt . This issue was tracked as bug 7126196 - IZU_TOP GONE/LOST AFTER AUTOCONFIG UPGRADE

The patch has been released yesterday, and I will send out an update to consumers of RUP S.

Patch 7126196 was given for the IZU_TOP deletion issue. We'll be applying it very soon.

Readme of patch TXK Rollup Patch S (Patch 6372396) is updated too.

From readme of patch 7126196
Those customers who have already applied TXK AUTOCONFIG AND TEMPLATES ROLLUP
PATCH S (6372396) and face the above issue should manually add the product top
entry into topfile.txt and then apply this patch.
