Evolutionary Steps for Automated Testing for E-Business Suite

My, how time flies.  It's been over two years since I last covered automated regression testing for the E-Business Suite. Our strategy for this area continues to evolve, so it's high time for an update.

The E-Business Suite Test Starter Kits consist of sample test scripts from our own E-Business Suite QA group, along with a Starter Guide, Best Practices Guide, and Installation instructions.  The test scripts were created against an EBS Vision Demo database displaying American English.  You can use these kits as a model for building out your own automated regression tests for your Apps environment.

Back in 2006, you could download our Quality Assurance teams' automated WinRunner QA scripts for Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i via a Test Starter Kit.  A few things have changed since then:

Test Starter Kits for WinRunner are Still Available

If you're still using WinRunner, you'll be pleased to learn that you can still download:

  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 12.0.4 - Patch 6799654
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 12.0 - Patch 5845794
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.10.2 - Patch 4520701
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.10 - Patch 4064542
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.9 - Patch 2983563
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.8 - Patch 2739616
  • WinRunner Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.7 - Patch 2471695

New Test Starter Kits for QTP are Available

If you've switched over to HP's QuickTest Professional (QTP) testing set of tools, you can now download the following new Test Starter Kits:

  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 12.1.1 - Patch 8408886
  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 12.0.4 - Patch 6845309
  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 12.0 - Patch 5845799
  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.10.2 - Patch 4611398
  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.10 - Patch 4355248
  • QTP Test Starter Kit for Release 11.5.9 - Patch 3313315

Only a subset of the E-Business Suite products with automated WinRunner scripts have QTP equivalents; the READMEs for the respective kits have more details about their contents.

hi Steven,
is it a free software or need license for testing?

Hi, Kai,

The EBS Test Starter Kits are free to all registered Metalink users. The QTP and WinRunner products must be licenced from Hewlett-Packard.

Any chance of a starter kit for selenium?

Posted by Sean on October 01, 2009 at 10:51 PM PDT #

Hi, Sean,

I don't think there are any plans for Selenium within the E-Business Suite division right now. Our next major effort will be focussed on upgrading our existing testscripts for the Oracle Applications Testing Suite (OATS). See:

Using the Oracle Applications Testing Suite with EBS: Interim Update #1

Hello there, Steven.

My company started automating test cases a few months ago, but seeing that Oracle EBS Suite QA Team already has automated scripts, currently available on the same tool we use here (QTP), I was wondering if there was some kind of partnership that could be arrange in order for us start using YOUR automated scripts for the CORE functionalities. Then, we would be able to focus the regression validations on our Customizations only.

Would such partnership, or service contract or something like that be possible?

Thanks in advance.

Posted by Andre Mendes on October 22, 2009 at 05:10 AM PDT #

Hello, Andres,

I can't comment on parnership arrangements or contractual arrangements, I'm afraid. I'm in E-Business Suite Development and have no visibility into partner-related activities.

If you'd like to pursue that, your best bet would be to follow up with someone in the Oracle PartnerNetwork organization. Their website is here:

http://www.oracle.com/partners/index.html

As for the use of our automated test scripts: if your customers have current Support licences for the E-Business Suite, they can download the E-Business Suite Test Starter Kits for their own use from Metalink at no additional charge.

Steven

Hi Steven,
Is it planned to provide Test Starter Kit for Quality Center version 10.0?

Regards,
Maija

Posted by Maija on February 07, 2010 at 09:39 PM PST #

Hi, Maija,

I believe that our teams' efforts may be now focussed on Oracle Application Testing Suite; see:

Oracle Application Testing Suite 9.0 Supported with Oracle E-Business Suite
http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2009/10/oats_ebs_certified.html

I'm not aware of any additional plans to update existing test scripts for new versions of Quality Center.

Steven

Thanks, Steven.
Is there any expected delivery date for the 1st version of Test Starter Kit for Oracle Application Testing Suite?

Hi, Maija,

Oracle's Revenue Recognition rules prohibit us from discussing certification and release dates, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

Hi Steven,

I have a question. Can i use QTP ( Quick Test Professional) Automated Testing tool to test eBS R12 Test scripts. I would be using automated Test scripts executing the same in QTP testing tool.

Would appreciate a quick response.

Thanks

Hi, Sujay,

Did you see the QTP section in the article above?

Hi,

Can anyone let me know if the standard start up kits have any coverage on Oracle Configurator Developer cases?

Thanks!

Hi, Rashmi,

I don't think any of our bloggers know much about the contents of the latest Test Starter Kits. That includes me.

I suspect not, but you can download the Test Starter Kit to check that firsthand.

Steven

Hi Steven,

Thanks for the great info.
I am trying to access the Test Starter Kit Information Center (Note 239746.1) and came to the My Oracle Support page. Just wondering, is CSI a (must) required info to access this information? Is there any other method that I can access this info?

Regards,
Jimmy

Posted by guest on December 29, 2011 at 05:53 PM PST #

Hi, Jimmy,

Everything on My Oracle Support is available only to customers with a valid CSI (meaning, you have a support contract). I'm afraid that there are no other ways of accessing the Test Starter Kit.

Steven

Hi - Current we are planning to automate customized functionalities in Finance, CRM & OLM modules of Oracle EBS application using Quick Test Professional 10.0.

We are keen to know whether E-Business Suite Test Starter Kits covers all the standard functionalities & pre build automated test scripts are available for performing an instance automation testing for non-custom [out of the box] functionalities. If so, please list out the standard functional area for Finance, CRM & OLM modules which is currently automated test scripts are available.

Thanks for your support !

Hi, Vijay,

Our ongoing investments will be in expanding our automated tests for Oracle Application Testing Suite.

Only a small subset of EBS functionality is covered by our QTP-based Test Starter Kits. I'd recommend that you download that Kit to see which ones will suit your testing requirements.

Best of luck with your automation efforts.

Steven

Hi Steven,

We have a bunch of QTP scripts built for R11i, currently we are analysing the impact to migrate these scripts to R12. I understand that R11i is on Oracle form based UI and R12 will have more web-based UI. Since QTP is scripted using different protocol, we are afraid that we may need to rescript the whole thing.

I can see that you guys have implemented QTP Starter Kit for R11 and R12, when you guys implemented these, is this a total rework or there is a different approach.

Do appreciate if you can share some experience on this. Thanks a lot.

Regards,
Jimmy

Posted by Jimmy on March 25, 2012 at 10:18 PM PDT #

Hi, Jimmy,

You're right: depending upon which E-Business Suite product's you've scripted in 11i, the amount of work required to redo those scripts for R12 in QTP may be substantial.

This was part of our reasoning for switching to Oracle Application Testing Suite from QTP. We began this work for QTP and released what we had in that Test Starter Kit. But the remaining work was subsequently invested in Oracle Application Testing Suite, since we don't have the capacity to maintain two parallel sets of scripts for two different automated testing tools.

Steven

Dear Steven
1) One of our Customer is looking at using any Open Source tools for Automation Testing. We tried with Selenium but it is not supporting Forms. Do you have any guidance on any open Source tool that will support EBS Automation testing ?
2) How can I convince the customer on cost advantage of using OATS

Posted by Sathish on January 20, 2013 at 07:20 AM PST #

Hello, Satish,

I'm afraid that I don't have much visibility into open source testing tools.

I'd recommend contacting your Oracle account manager. He or she would be happy to help build a business case for using OATS in your customer's environment.

Steven

Steven, a client of ours is asking about the release of additional; templates/accelerators for Oracle Application Testing Suite/OpenScript - in particular support for the recently purchased Argus family of applications. Does such a release schedule exist?

Posted by Walter McAdams on February 27, 2013 at 09:28 AM PST #

Walter,

I'm part of the E-Business Suite division. I'm not familiar with the OATS plans for supporting Argus. You might wish to contact your Oracle account manager to get some help with this one.

Steven

Hi Steven,
I am not sure if there is a QTP starter kit for R12.1.3 or the patch/kit for R12.1.1 will be applicable? At what oracle ebiz release that oracle stop developing QTP test starter kit?
I would like get your advise and oracle experience in test data preparation, as this is teething exercise for us with many data that can only be used once. Does Oracle has any scripts or tool that queries data from the DB.
Thanks Steven for your kind advice.

Hi, Alic,

I don't monitor that area very closely, but my impression is that the last Test Starter Kit released for QTP was for EBS 12.1.1. After that point, Oracle's strategic direction shifted to focus on the Oracle Application Testing Suite tool.

The Oracle Application Testing Suite tool has a SQL Performance Analyzer and Database Replay tool can be used to test database-specific transactions. That tool offers some interesting capabilities and testing options; I'd recommend checking it out.

Steven
