Errata: Automated Testing, Reloaded

One of the things I prize about my job is that customers are constantly asking me questions that prompt me to investigate things I'd otherwise know little about.  Educational opportunities abound.

Correction:  LoadRunner Can't Invoke WinRunner Scripts

A comment from a puzzled reader prompted me to revisit my Automated Testing for the E-Business Suite article, where I wrote:

"WinRunner is used to create an automatic testing script, which can then be repeated as many times as you'd like using Mercury LoadRunner."

This turns out to be incorrect.

We do use both tools but they're not integrated.  We use LoadRunner for Apps benchmarking,  but LoadRunner cannot run WinRunner scripts.

Independent of those WinRunner scripts, Our Performance team uses different LoadRunner scripts for producing their Apps benchmarks.

We've implemented some custom WinRunner functions to collect performance statistics when running WinRunner scripts.

Use of QuickTest Professional

In addition, it appears that Mercury is promoting QuickTest Professional over WinRunner for E-Business Suite testing.  I'm told that QuickTest Pro is able to execute WinRunner 8.0 scripts.

QuickTest Professional Screenshot:

Quite a nice looking tool, with some new features like Firefox support

At present, our plans are to continue using WinRunner for both Release 11i and Release 12 automated regression testing.  If things change on this front, I'll post another update here.

I only have one question, i have worked with QTP, but Is QTP 9.2 working with Oracle eBS 12?

Thanks, regards.

Hi, Aida,Our WinRunner scripts are not compatible with QTP.  HP/Mercury does offer some conversion tools, but they do not convert existing WinRunner scripts to QTP formats fully.  Your mileage may vary. HP/Mercury continues to upgrade those tools since we last reviewed them. This, by the way, has hampered our own internal efforts to switch to QTP; we've made substantial investments in the existing WinRunner scripts and are reluctant to do so again in the pursuit of QTP.Regards,Steven

With HP terminating support for Winrunner, does Oracle have alternate plans for using QTP instead or ?

Doug,This is something we're looking into.  There are a number of internal dimensions that I can't comment upon publicly yet, but I'll post something here as soon as our strategy post-WinRunner gets clarified.Regards,Steven

Oracle crushes when QTP is open - any help??

Posted by Pappie on June 16, 2009 at 09:43 PM PDT #

Hello, Pappie,

I don't know what might be going on here. I'd recommend logging a formal Service Request to get Oracle Support engaged. They may need to refer you to HP for advanced assistance with QTP, with which Oracle doesn't have a lot of experience.

What are your thoughts on using DataLoad tool with Forms recording/playback or even standard Forms recording/playback on its own as a automated testing tool?

Posted by Suhail Hisamuddin on March 08, 2010 at 09:42 PM PST #

Hello, Suhail,

We haven't tried that tool with the E-Business Suite. I don't have any opinions about it, I'm afraid.

Hi Steve,

We are using Loadrunner Version 8.1. Is this version compatible with Oracle EBS, or do we need to upgrade to a higher version?

Posted by Shipra on July 06, 2010 at 05:46 PM PDT #

Hi, Shipra,

I'm afraid that I don't know. We provide E-Business Suite Test Starter Kits for WinRunner, not Loadrunner, so I can't say for certain whether this combination will work. I would guess that it would work, but you should verify that yourself or with Hewlett-Packard.
