E-Business Suite 12.1.3 Templates for Oracle VM Now Available

I am pleased to announce that you can use pre-built Oracle VM templates to create a fully operational Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 environment now.  Instructions for downloading these new templates are here:
32-bit templates are available now and and 64-bit versions will be available soon.  We used Production (PROD) database files instead of the Vision Demonstration database to make the database template download smaller -- it is now three files instead of eight.

The Oracle VM template for Oracle E-business Suite 12.1.3 (64-bit and 32-bit) consists of two separate virtual machines:
  • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Production Database Tier
  • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 Application Tier
The database tier virtual machine includes:
  • Oracle Linux 5.5
  • Oracle Database
  • E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 production database with data
The applications tier virtual machine includes:
  • Oracle Linux 5.5
  • Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 applications node
Production Use Considerations

These templates deliver a starting point installation of Oracle Linux and E-Business Suite. Customers are meant to review, configure, and test any deployments they are considering to use for production.

I'm glad the templates are out now and I can understand using PROD tablespaces to make the downloads smaller... but on 32-bit VMs? Do you all really expect many Production deployments of EBS to be 32-bit?

It seems like people would use the 32-bit with a vision database for testing / POCs and 64-bit with Production deployments.

I look forward to when the 64-bit templates are out. Do you know if they'll be using the new Oracle "specialized' kernel or if they'll be using the default OEL 5.5 kernel?

I guess on that subject, do you all expect a performance increase on the application tier with the "specialized" kernel? Will it be necessary to do an rpm -ivh --force of the oracle-el5 rpm after switching to the specialized kernel?

Last question: will 12.1.3 rapid install media be available or will the only way to go to 12.1.3 be either templates or patching?

I realize I could spend the time and probably test some of these things myself, but I figured I'd ask the experts. Thanks as always.

Hi, Jay,

We've been limited by our certification bandwidth. The 64-bit templates are ready for testing, and our Applications Platforms Engineering team is scheduling that certification effort right now. I don't know which kernals they'll be optimized for; I'll make sure that that's part of the certification announcement for those templates.

12.1.3 is a maintenance pack release only. The latest Rapid Install release is 12.1.1. If you're building an environment from scratch (instead of using an Oracle VM template), You can apply 12.1.3 to a 12.1.1 environment directly.

Does the 12.1.3 OVM template have data? In your post, right under the screenshot for the e-delivery site, you indicate that you used the production database files for the template which leads me to think that it is a blank instance with just seed data. But later on you state the following: E-Business Suite Release 12.1.3 production database with data.

What is this data?

We're looking to bring up a 12.1.3 Vision instance and using an OVM template would be ideal but its unclear whether this template has Vision data.

Please let us know.

Regards and keep up the great work!

Hi, Abe,

Ivo may not be able to get around to this, so I'm stepping in. I confirm that these smaller VM templates are using the PROD database files -- they do not include Vision data. The second reference to "production database with data" simply indicates seed data.

Dear Steven,

Thank you for the great information. It would be a better decision, to deploy oracle EBS 12.1.3 on Oracle VM for 500 concurrent users with two node oracle 11g R2 RAC. Please advice.

Thank you,

Can you rephrase or elaborate on your question?

Hi steven Chan,
Our EL and EXA setup is as follows:
1. Exalogic (EL) Quarter Rack with Solaris 10 (x86-64). Weblogic 11g already installed and configured on all the 8 Nodes.
2. Exadata(EXA) Quarter Rack Installed Oracle 11gr2 RAC database and assigned all storage to ASM
3. One of customer want us to deploy EBS R12 on EL and he want separate RAC database instance on EXA configured for him.
4. We did not installed OEMOPC and OVM on our environment.
5. I gone through the oracle support doc (1499132.1) EBS r12 VM templates for Exalogic
6. Do we need to install oemopc to create vDC and OVM on EL and EXA?. If yes, where on separate machine or on EL and EXA
7. The above document dose not states where to create DB Tier on EL or EXA.

Will you please give your expert comment on this.

Hello, Guest,

Your question is rather involved, and I don't think that a blog comment would be the best way of helping you with this.

We can provide general conceptual guidance here, but I'm afraid that this blog isn't the best place to get technical support for specific issues like the one that you're working through.

Your best bet would be to log a formal Service Request via My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) to get one of our specialists engaged.

Please feel free to forward your Service Request number to me if it gets stuck in the support process for some reason.
